Hello everyone!

I hope you all have been enjoying the improvements I brought to endless mode in version 0.11. Today I'd like to bring you all a status update with a sneak peak at version 0.12, but first I've got some very big news to share!

Baldi's Basics Plus now has a producer!

As I've mentioned in previous status updates, I'd begun searching for a producer/project manager. Primarily to help me get a publisher for Baldi's Basics Plus, but also to help keep things on track and wrap up the project within a reasonable amount of time. Well I'm happy to announce that Nayan Ramachandran has been brought onto the project to fill that role!

Nayan has had several years of experience within the video game industry, specifically working with independent game developers. With his experience I believe he will be a huge help in getting Baldi's Basics Plus a good publisher and, ultimately, finished!

We've been working together about a month now and are starting to really get into the swing of things. So far this has been great as we've begun working on our pitch and getting more organized with Baldi's Basics Plus' development cycle! In the future I will likely bring a few more team members onto the project, at which point Nayan's management skills will become invaluable. All that is to say, I'm incredibly thankful to have his help moving forward!

What's in store for version 0.12?

A lot of my dev time since 0.11's release has been for 1.0 stuff, but I have also created some new content for version 0.12! Here's a couple sneak peaks:

These screenshots are of some of the new surprises you can expect in version 0.12. Any guesses as to what they are?

In more technical news, I have made some big improvements to the way collisions between entities are handled. You know how in the current version of Baldi's Basics Plus, characters who are chasing you, such as Playtime and Principal of the Thing, will hover on top of you while they're squished until they finally regain their normal height? Well I've now set up a system where entities can detect invalid collisions as well as valid collisions and react accordingly. On top of that I've extended this system to other scenarios that affect the ability of entities to interact, such as Gravity Chaos. This ensure consistency between entity interactions so they'll always behave how you expect.

So now if a squished Playtime reaches you she'll become sad and wander away instead. If Principal of the Thing is chasing you, but you're upside down and he's not, he'll try and fail to send you to detention, which results in him teleporting there but not you. And good ol' Dr. Reflex can no longer squish entities if he's in a scenario that should prevent interactions!

This change not only fixes several longstanding issues, but also makes it easy to ensure future collision affecting mechanics I may introduce in the future will be consistent with the existing ones.

Let's Talk About Challenge Maps

Something I've been thinking about for a while now is the future of challenge maps. As I've focused more and more on the core of Baldi's Basics Plus I've started wondering if challenge maps might be outside the scope of the project, at least in their current form. Before making any drastic decisions though I wanted to get feedback from all of you!

Legacy challenge maps

As I'm sure you all know, the game currently has three challenge maps which I've labeled as "legacy" content since they've become pretty outdated relative to the rest of the game. I've tried to make sure they remain playable as I update the game, but they do have a handful of issues due to changes breaking certain behaviors in the challenge maps. With that said, I'm wondering how you all would feel if they ended up getting removed at some point during the early access.

Now this isn't something I plan on doing, but if at some point I make a change that breaks the legacy challenge maps, I would prefer to be able to just cut them instead of spend time trying to fix them. Since I don't plan on making any new challenge maps until version 1.0 releases I wouldn't be able to replace them quickly like when I temporarily removed the old field trips to make way for the current one.

I don't like removing content that I've already released, because I know there may be players out there who still enjoys it, but that's why I'm asking now. How many of you still enjoy the legacy challenge maps and would be disappointed to see them disappear in future early access versions? Your current feelings will help me make the decision should I ever need to make it. I'll also add that if I were to remove the challenge maps, I'd let you all know beforehand to give anyone who cares the chance to back up the current version. Of course, the current challenge maps will end up getting scrapped in 1.0 anyways, so no matter what they won't last forever!

The future of challenge maps

Speaking of 1.0 though, that brings me to the other point I'd like to discuss, and that's whether or not challenge maps will make the cut into the final game at all. As I've continued developing Baldi's Basics Plus I've become less excited about the idea of challenge maps, and have also started questioning how well they fit into the overall design of the game. In terms of development, designing several levels by hand is very different from everything else I've been doing. In fact, not even the legacy challenge levels were designed by hand, they were procedurally generated levels that I converted into premade map data!

What I'm getting at is, designing levels, like really good levels, would require a skill that I've never practiced before. Whenever it would be time to start designing challenge maps, I can't help but feel like that would put a weird damper on development as we'd probably be nearly finished with everything else. I'd very likely need to bring an experienced level designer onto the team, which of course would require a higher budget than without. If I did the level designs myself, that would take me away from working on other, more important things, and probably result in levels that are just okay. In either case it would probably extend development time.

Of course, I don't want to scrap a feature that I've been saying would be added to the game in the future. Even with my disclaimer of "everything is subject to change" it's not something I take lightly when it's an entire game mode at stake. At the same time, I'm trying to consider what's overall best for the game. So currently, I see three options:

A) I keep challenge maps as originally planned.

B) I scrap challenge maps entirely.

C) I compromise and make challenge maps procedurally generated levels, focusing entirely on interesting gameplay scenarios instead of unique level designs.

Currently, I feel like option C is the one I'd like to take, but what do you all think? Making the challenge levels mostly procedural would be relatively simple, as I'd mainly only need to worry about programming the conditions that make them unique. On the other hand, the unique potential of hand-made levels would be lost. Originally, one of my main goals for challenge maps was for them to function as subtle tutorials, where they'd be designed in such a way that they'd help players learn game mechanics without outright explaining them to them (Similar to, for example, how the beginning of Super Mario Bros. level 1-1 almost forces players to learn that goombas are bad and mushrooms are good). While I would like to maintain that aspect of the challenge maps, I do wonder if it's really necessary or if experience in Hide & Seek is enough for players to learn how everything works. Maybe there's another way entirely I could allow players to more easily experiment with individual game elements. There's a lot to think about!

I will not be making a final decision on this matter for a while, and will continue considering other approaches I could take that could work better than the original idea, but I'd love to hear feedback from you all to help me navigate this issue and make the best decision possible!

Conclusion

I hope you all will look forward to version 0.12! I plan on releasing the pre-release on August 25, followed by the public release on September 1. As with version 0.11, this will be relatively small update, but I think there will be a lot of fun to be had with the new content!

I think that covers pretty much everything for this status update. Thank you all for the support, and I look forward to reading everyone's comments about the challenge map stuff!

I am really happy about this, Thank you Mystman12!

Aamet

OMG WHAT

Joe Mama

Cant wait for this new update, and I also agree that option C would be a good choice for the challenge maps.

noname321

I enjoy the idea of challenges, procedural generation would be acceptable if it feels like normal levels would be too much but if I had to choose I'd pick a custom challenge map like the current ones

Pencilbert 3D

For the challenge map debate, I pick C, we really do like challenge maps as they are super fun when i'm bored

HaDerpo

interesting... can't wait to play this!

nineteen

never played challange maps much but I wouldn’t mind if they got removed during early access but it’s nice to have when you want a break from hide and seek, i’d definitely C

Me

I dont really mind what you would do with the challenges lol since i havent even hovered my mouse over the option in a while. But I would like to see Option C because it sounds very interesting! Also what is the big brown bag

Aamet

C is better

Erik

I'm currently on a trip in Hungary but I had to stop to read that, that's some good news! About the legacy challenge maps, I do really enjoy them, but since they will be gone either way I wouldn't mind if they were gone sooner.. As for the challenge maps, I definitely think that option C is the best, as I would really like to have some challenge maps that differ from the normal hide and seek mode.

Dash2700

I really think challenge maps should stay in the game, even if they're in the procedurally generated state. The more stuff that gets added to the game, the more unique scenarios and strategies become possible. While they're all things that technically can happen in hide and seek, challenge levels still can be used to toy around with interactions that aren't very common. Just limiting the map to a set few items or a specific character can go a long way, and even if they have randomized maps they can still be used to help players encounter and master certain hide and seek scenarios. Pre-made maps would be cool, but it makes sense not to focus on that as what makes Plus so special isn't the map itself you play on, but everything that happens inside of it. Ultimately it's up to you if they stay or not, but I believe they've got potential as both subtle tutorials and a way to play around with specific elements of the game in unique ways.

LucasTV

I would pick option C for the challenge maps and I can't wait for 0.12!

Qwerty

I am personally okay with either A or C, C sounds also more interesting, letting you have more time to brainstorm specific ideas

EclipseRO_XVIl

First of all, excited to see Nayan on the team. It's awesome to see you working with a team now. Now about the challenges, I wouldn't be broken up about scrapping the challenges. I kinda forgot those actually exist, but for the folks that do enjoy it, yeah definitely give em a heads-up before scrapping it. *However* I also think it would be interesting to see some of the modern tweaks on it, The challenges are already fun when you're bored, so I'd pick option C.

DEEJAYY

The pre release comes out the exact day I have to go back to school! Noooooooo!

JimJamm

i wouldn't mind the legacy challenge maps being removed from the early access. as for the challenge maps i think option C is the best, randomly generated maps would make development easier. perhaps a select few challenges could have pre made maps if it benefits them but i imagine most would work with randomly generated maps

Marsaus

WOW! IM SO EXCITED! I wonder what's that creature in the principals office...

Pencilbert 3D

🚨THERES 8 NOTEBOOKS IN IMAGE 2🚨

VandalCAT 095

Honestly, Option C for challenge maps is your best bet. (And is the coolest)

VandalCAT 095

I thought it was a rock at first, but it looks way to weird...

ComedicCat (she/they)

oh, neat, the balloon counting puzzle from birthday bash is being added

hopja

As a third year game design student, I highly recommend going with option C, and saving challenge maps for a later point of development. Whether that's 1.0, or post-1.0 is up to you.

leafling in da sunset

Thanks for being transparent Micah! I personally think C would be the best option for Baldi’s Basics Plus as it would be less stress for you and it would keep the random nature of the game, making it more replayable. Also, WHAT THE HECK IS THAT THING IN THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE?

kal

Wow, these new gameplay screenshots look really interesting! As for the challenge maps, I think C is the best way to go about doing them in my opinion.

GrainyWayGalxay

I honestly thought C was what was originally planned. It totally makes sense to me to start with a procedurally generated level and then tweak it afterwards to fit certain scenarios. With the new collision changes will Gotta Sweep only sweep characters that match his orientation during Gravity Chaos?

DexoXeck

In the first screenshot, there's the number 6 on the wall and there's 7 blue balloons... 6 7... This proves that Baldi is indeed hip with the kids.

QuizmasterJJE aka AveryBoy

I would do C since it's not scrapping the idea of challenges, while those legacy challenges will no longer be a thing. Besides, most of the players would likely be only able to beat one of those challenges, if you do C, make sure to implement a balance system so it can at least be beatable. Also, judging from the screenshots, there may be a new room to access easily, and a new way to answer Math questions, similar to those "5 apples minus 3 apples" questions or "if Johny had 19 bottles of dishsoap and gave Jeana 6" questions. Edit: I also wish the new producer the best of luck.

JimJamm

i wouldn't mind if challenge maps were added in an update after 1.0 releases, as i remember in a recent interview you said you'd consider updating the game after 1.0 to add "extra goodies" like new modes and multiplayer if people wanted them

@88!

If you could, I think you should do the original idea and take your time. If it's impossible to take your time in your situation however, I would go with option C. Also, do the 8 notebooks imply that you are making Baldi faster at the end of F4? Because if so, that is the only thing I needed for this update.

Penutzam

C is the best option; I feel like the challenge maps are all about the unique scenarios anyway. Plus, you get a new experience every time. Also, in image 2 there are 8 notebooks, this is not normally possible, maybe it's a hint or maybe it's just mystman messing around with the dev tools.

Shifty Mungus

Definitely go with C, Second, I don’t think much harm would come if you remove the legacy challenge maps.

Harma 22

Option C sounds interesting, I think it could work well if the experience is different enough from normal Hide and Seek levels. The existance of the challenges that can be chosen before starting a Hide and Seek run and how much variety random levels would have by that point could be taken into coinsideration for this too. Also the 1st screenshot is a new activity for sure. I don't know what could be in the 2nd one mayyybe a new character or item, or event, or something completly new, there's many options.

Graysen Wilson

Hold on... The button with the numbers and balloons is at the front of the classroom where the mach machine usually is... Either we are getting a new puzzle or math machines are getting removed.

TheJerkChicken99

I also think option C is the right approach. I feel like it will be super interesting and fun to play different school layouts of the challenges and less tedious.

Reeseychoo

secret ending?? i'll take option c

Crimtea

Option C sounds fine as long as the maps generate in such a way that they don't wildly differentiate from each other (like one map is small but then another is way bigger). Allows it to be fair while also adding unpredictability. Looking forward to 0.12!!

The Riddle Goblin

Unique gameplay should definitely be the focus of challenges, some of them could definitely affect the generation though.

DoCheonGong

I think the balloon puzzle will likely replace some classrooms with math machines, so on Floor 2 onwards, some classrooms will have math machines and others will have balloon puzzle. The same probably will go on Endless Mode as well.

DoCheonGong

I prefer to the C option for the challenge. I wonder that the new challenges look like.

Red Raven

Keep the challenges in, but it doesn't really matter since I am a steam user so I can get older versions of the game using a command, but they are nice! Also, I could possibly help with level design, but that's totally up to you! Keep up the good work! (I still think we should get steam keys for pre-releases)

Nour

Either there's going to be 8 notebooks on Floor 4, OR there will be 8 notebooks on Floor 3 and Mystman is saving the big ol' 9 notebooks for Floor 5. (I'm kinda stuck between C and A but I think I'll go with C) Edit: NEW ACTIVITY AND A NEW WAY TO BREAK WINDOWS YESSSSSSSSSSSS

Master_64

I feel like Option C is going to feel like Fun Settings, which from what it seems like, about everyone loved that idea. Perhaps consider doing both, where challenges play like Hide & Seek, but with a forced preset of Fun Settings, then maybe make it so that completing a challenge with any particular preset unlocks said Fun Setting(s). Doing this would also allow both the player to enable all Fun Settings at once for ultimate chaos, and the challenge community to create far more difficult challenges from the base-game, which may be a good thing. Fun Settings remind me of older games that had unlockable cheats in them, which you could use to make the game easier or more challenging. I loved this part of old games, and I hope that BB+ capitalizes on this in a big way, giving way to many new possibilities of combinations and chaos. The original challenges, when compared to the base-game, definitely lack in the fun factor. Getting a level designer for better level design would be nice as you mentioned, though I also consider whether it's necessary or not. I feel like, at that point, we'd be better off waiting for v1.0 and then waiting for a level editor with Steam Workshop support. With that, we'd not only get more unique challenges, but it also opens up a lot of other avenues for chaos and fun, much like what the game is aiming for. I suppose an official mod loader could have a similar effect, but official support is always nice, though I do wonder how viable it would be. In any case, good luck, and I hope all goes well!

BaldiFan99

I think option C is the best, but I think A is also good too, but C might be better not only for the community, also for you because you will not have to worry about how are the Challenge Maps going to be designed.

BaldiFan99

And also, on what version is the Farm Field Trip coming, and will you add the Wild West one and on what version (if you ever plan to)?

Marsaus

I think that's a new character called ''Mr. Rubbish''

SatinFoil

I think option c would be the best. That is actually the one I was thinking when I was reading this before even seeing the options

ComedicCat (she/they)

ok, so is anyone else wondering what the thing in the second image is? to me, it looks like a torn-up sack, but i'm not sure what correlation that would have to the broken windows.

Albi Gjyliqi

Remove challenge maps and just redo it into like the fun settings, it makes it way better and more fun

Graysen Wilson

Guys, I have a confession: my laptop has been broken since 0.9, so I've been playing on my moms laptop only when pre releases come out. My mom is getting me a chromebook for school, so ill be able to play again! "But it isn't supported," literally nobody asked, but since chrome os supports linux, and the game has an official Linux port, ill be able to play again! I'm definitely gonna be rusty, so it'll be a while until I am back in my prime, managing to beat the game with only wd noquee and principal whistle, but ill be back, hopefully.

Planitary Games

Ok so while doing some theorizing about the balloons with a button in a classroom.. Maybe I can fully make a confidential guess. Could this be maybe like that one part from birthday bash? Count the balloons! And I can tell there's another number over there so maybe there's 2 variants of balloons and you have to count to perhaps make a math problem and whatever symbol there is, there would be then the math machine's balloons to answer the problem

Graysen Wilson

my chromebook arrived today, and the first thing i did was install the game, in which i found a few things: -the game is so optimized that it actually ran pretty decently on the chromebook. -IM STILL GOOD!!!!!!! like i beat all 5 floors no hit. on my first run on chromebook

BaldiFan99

Micah, when is Episode 5 of the Basically, Games! podcast releasing?

MesharBaldiBP

This will likely be only in F3 because F5 has the same amount of notebooks as F3

Anihotta Sierra

Mystman12! You may not remember me and that’s fine. But I’m the guy from the podcast espiode 3 , I finished bootcamp , SOI and now, I’m at my schoolhouse. Still glad you’re continuing your work on Baldi’s Basics, and now I can continue to patronage.

I love how posts get like a zillion comments when a pre-release is about to release.

SatinFoil

Pre-release comes out today!! :D

siim piiru

okay its 10pm no prerelease (im in estonia)

Graysen Wilson

When do pre-releases usually release?

Penutzam

Guys, Mystman said that he needs to finish the update really quick because he's behind on work so if you could just give him an hour or 2.

Nour

Time for a prediction. (Pre-release) 0.12 will come out at 3:00 PM. If not, I will... Uh... Breathe air like usual. Yeah. 👍 Edit: I have breathed.

BaldiFan99

THE. PRE.RELEASE. COMES. OUT. AT. 4. PM. please wait

Nour

Or will it...?

SorbetKid

To everybody here begging & pleading for it to drop, PLEASE, STOP. Games take time, and so do any kind of updates. Please be patient & respect Micah's time, thank you.

lame dan

THE PRE RELEASE COMES OUT WHEN THEY RELEASE THE MYSTMAN GOBLINS FROM THEIR CHAINS

BaldiFan99

Yeah, I agree with SorbetKid, Micah is a human being, not an automatic game producer or a robot, the game takes effort and time to make it, and also, remember that the entire game was made only by Micah (and the help of his sister and Joshua Valent, I think). In my opinion, the pre-release is releasing at 4 P.M. , like the 0.11 pre-release, that was released at 4 P.M. , too. Please consider waiting.

BaldiFan99

THE 0.11 PRERELEASE HAS BEEN UNPINNED. THE 0.12 IS COMINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Guys, while we wait for the prerelease, let's try playing Endless Mode to set a few scores.

Graysen Wilson

Nah, lets do campfire frenzy. I have a score of 579

Anonymous

You sayin' that Pick-Quick-Nic isn't an option either? Let's do all 3 of them.

Graysen Wilson

What is ur high score on campfire frenzy?

About the same as yours, though I got it a long time ago and neglected the field trips for some time now.

Shifty Mungus

I don’t get why we can’t get field trips tickets on Floor 3, 4, and 5
