As promised in yesterday's newsletter, a new poll for Patreon supporters!

We are going to make a new video about the Napoleonic Wars, but in a very different style to previous episodes. While the existing series does include some great eyewitness testimony, it's always slightly bothered me that we don't hear more from the ordinary soldiers, officers, surgeons and camp-followers involved in these epic events. Now we want to put that right.

'Voices of the Napoleonic Wars' will focus entirely on eyewitness accounts of the conflict, read by talented actors, supported by great images. There are many fantastic letters, diaries and memoirs that exist from this period, and we plan to share some of the best with you, presented in a dramatic and compelling style.

But we need your help to narrow our focus, and pick the topic for this video!

(If this video is a success, we may be able make follow-up videos on the other topics)

Please vote for your favourite topic before Monday 15th April!

Peninsular war was hell. Would love to hear more about how soldiers and civilians went through.

Without a shadow of doubt the medical care in the Napoleonic wars. One of the most forgotten topics in that entire era. The horrifying reports by surgeons operating on wounded soldiers, the state that Medical care was in during the early 19th century has always been a fascinating subject for me, I’d love to see you guys cover that topic!

TankerBricks

Peninsular War for certain. Actually had to write a homework assignment about Medical care during the 1800s when I was taking History, touched a bit on Baron Larrey...

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

Invasion of Russia would be lovely but honestly why not just a massive docu on all three? 🤔💚😄

The Voices of the Past YouTube channel does some great first hand accounts from the napoleonic wars, including the retreat from Russia and a British soldier perspective at Waterloo. Great to get more of it!

Lich's Log Cabin

The Peninsular War, definitely. It was a messy conflict that must have a wealth of stories and perspective. And I always approve of hearing more about of my favorite marshal, Suchet!

Flint and Ball

I voted medical care, i think that would be fascinating. Both others would too, but medical care is one aspect that never seems to get attention.

Couldn’t have put it better myself

Lets have an in depth video on the Six Days Campaign

I am really gutted that so few people voted for medical care. It's such an important aspect of the Napoleonic Wars that often gets overlooked. It would have been amazing to hear more about Larey as I have mentioned before but I am sure one day there will be a video about it.

I happen to be reading Jakob Walter's recollections of his experiences fighting in the Russia Campaign. I Don't know if you've read him, but it’s a fascinating account by an ordinary Wurttemberg foot soldier who fought with the main column in Ney's III Corps. Naturally, the combat and strategic situation is not the most striking detail. Throughout the book, Walter is almost perpetually concerned with finding provisions, and adapting to the weather (first the heat, and ultimately the freezing retreat), which I think provides a great insight into the priorities and challenges of men who didn’t have the benefit of a royal title or high rank. It's incredible when you peel away the maps, tactics, and big personalities (like the marshals and Napoleon), just how chaotic, miserable, and desperate it was for ordinary soldiers, who were often clueless as to what was going on or why they were there. Given the perspective it provides, I’m glad this channel is going into this territory.

Walter's account is very interesting, I think we quote from him once or twice in the videos on the Russian campaign.

Peninsular would be v interesting given the guerrilla fighting and the repressive responses. Quite pertinent too!

Benjamin Fuller

How appropo would the Invasion of Russia be?

Tom Vansel

If the Peninsular War wins, simply expect lots of "Sharpe" jokes everywhere. Now That's Soldiering!

This was a really tough poll for me. I really want ‘all of the above’.
