Dear Patrons,

We are very pleased to share our latest video - The Rise of China Part 2!

This episode focuses on the rise of Chiang Kai-shek, as his Kuomintang Army takes on the warlords and the Communists, forcing Mao and others to undertake their legendary 'Long March'. But once again, foreign predators wait in the wings, ready to exploit Chinese vulnerability...

A big thank you to Ting-chieh Ou Yang and Ye Qingtian for their assistance translating and sourcing our Chinese quotes, and to Taylor Bradford for his invaluable guidance on Mandarin pronunciation! Any errors or inconsistencies that remain are entirely our own.

Typos for Merch is in effect, so please let us know in the comments if you spot anything.

We hope you enjoy this latest episode, thank you for your fantastic support and have a great weekend!

MitchyCool

Not gonna lie Chiang Kai-shek was pretty based. Amazing job as always you guys - I wasn’t expecting this so soon!

TankerBricks

GCSE history, only covers part of the Manchurian Incident of 1931, this has expanded my knowledge!

Eli Khanam

I love this channel for making me interested in the Napoleonic Wars. But covering a lesser known era of conflict in one of my favourite regions in the world, is something I'll always appreciate!

Taha Addam

What a hook! I knew of some of the events like the Long March and the first Chinese United Front, but never with such detail and accuracy. You guys never miss and I'm glad y'all are taking on some new subjects that no doubt, people will love.

Kevin Xu

This is great! I really appreciate you took the time to give Jiang Jieshi his endonym and exonym, thank you! At first watch there isn’t anything glaringly off, I might have more comments on rewatch

Anyone further interested in this era, might I recommend the steam game Rise of the White Sun. It’s an indie Paradox-like game where you play as a character during these turbulent times! Everything from the famous KMT, warlords, and communist characters, all the way to the lesser known colorful characters like White Army Russian exiles, Qing governors, peasant militant groups, and even a cult with a purported descendant of the Ming Emperor It’s rough in presentation but definitely rich in the history and the potential of backstabbing and rapid table turning

If I recall correctly, the Kwangtung Army essentially went off the board in regards to what the civilian government with Japan spending a lot of money, resources and men into the Second Sino Japanese war. The Civilian Government was unable to control the Army, who in essence ran the country from the mid 1930s.

rayski

Fantastic video, also the soundtrack is great too…insane times

Stuart Carver

What a cliffhanger to leave it on, dramatic to say the least. How you’ll do justice to what happens next without being demonetized I don’t know 🤢 gonna be very tricky.

Aaron Hernandez

Amazing as always; y’all never miss! Will there be a part 3 or does this lead into the WW2 series?

Stuart Walker

This is a brilliant series and I am learning so much. The scale of the conflict and loss of life is staggering. The narrative and visual representations are first class and make this complex period really accessible. Great work, thank you.

Amazing

EpicHistoryTV

There will be several more episodes! But you're right, it also ties in very nicely with the beginning of our World War 2 series.

MitchyCool

I loved this one so much, I upgraded my subscription!

Alex Lee

Truly amazing series! and the incredibly rich and detailed sound mixing and score make it all the better

Matt White

Amazing! A few pronunciation tips, the Chinese words/names starting with ZH, it's actually more like the English J sound (Zhang = Jang). The (kuo) in the national party's name (kuo-min-dang), is pronounced more like the English word 'gore' (guo/kuo = gore). Like China (zhong guo = jong gore). It's confusing because previous spellings were not standardised and I think were western attempts to read/pronounce Chinese words at the time. (Kuo) in the national party name actually refers to 'country' or 'nation', but before Pinyin was developed it was spelt with a K, now it is spelt (in pinyin) with a G. 国民党(national party), 中国 (China/middle kingdom).

Mango

I am dying to read books about the Warlord Era & the Northern Expedition, do you have any source recommendations or did or your info come purely from Dr. Chang? Thank you so much for covering this important topic

Eric Hu

Looking forward to the next one as always EHTV. Curious if you guys will be using Yang’s Tombstone estimate for the death toll of the Great Famine?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Eric. We have "at least 45 million excess deaths" in the script currently, via Dikötter. What number does Yang cite?

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Mango, that's a good question! We're putting together a reading list for our Rise of China series now. we'll be able to share this with you soon and it will also be included in the description when these videos are published on YouTube.

Eric Hu

I believe Dikotter builds on Yang's work, whose number was also around there! Thank you for examining this period of history, it's incredibly dark and overlooked. Best as always :)

Alex Lisso

Amazing video, thank you for doing what you do!! I’m keen to learn more about the type of warfare that was conducted during this era. If’s difficult to find play-by-plays of individual battles during this time whereas the Battle of Austerlitz, for example, is extremely well documented. Why is this? And where would you recommend to look for more details about the specific battles of, say, the Northern Expedition?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Alex! To try to answer your question, Austerlitz is one of the most well-studied battles in history, fought in a single day in the heart of Europe, by the most famous general in history. There are good sources, memoirs and eyewitnesses (in translation). And from Clausewitz onwards, there has been intense interest in studying Napoleon's battles. I'm not an expert on China's civil wars, but we can make assumptions about why it's hard to find good accounts (in English) - the Northern Expedition was fought across thousands of miles, over several months in chaotic conditions. It has no simple, clear narrative. For western military historians, you can add the language difficulties, difficulty in accessing sources, and remote geography.. Not many are equipped to take on that challenge. We've not discovered any great accounts of the military campaigns in English - that's not what we're covering in this series - and I suspect you will have to look to specialist military history journals, older books, or Chinese sources.. Perhaps a fellow Patron has recommendations? For great recent books about China in this period (not military focused) we'd recommend Rana Mitter's works. There are also several biographies of Chiang in English, which draw heavily on his diaries, which will have useful info.

Alex Lisso

Awesome, thank you for the response and the recommendations!

Line_of_Blood

I hope we can get a “story of Buddhism” too

David G

The video on Napoleons marshals is amazing. I've seen it at least 20 times. Any chance to make a short about Desaix?

EpicHistoryTV

No plans as yet - the real draw has been to illustrate the global spread of the big two religions through conquest, conversion, exploration, etc. They're not histories of the religion per se, if that makes sense.

EpicHistoryTV

Not a bad idea! We probably already have most of the content from our Egypt and Italy series..

Toffee Hornet

I couldn't wait for the YouTube premier; that is why I came here to Patreon. Fantastic content, as always! China is starting to look like a great series.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Ace, and thanks for supporting our work!

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Mango - here's a preview of our recommended reading: “The Penguin History of Modern China: the Fall and Rise of a Great Power, 1850 to the Present” by Jonathan Fenby “The Cambridge Illustrated History Of China” by Patricia Buckley Ebrey “A Bitter Revolution: China's Struggle with the Modern World” by Rana Miter And also some recommended films: To Live (1994) The Last Emperor (1987) Raise the Red Lantern (1992)

Mango

That's absolutely brilliant thank you so much for this! Really appreciate it. Epic History TV showing why they're the best in the game yet again

Kevin Xu

I think it’s also important to note that the Great Famine needs to be discussed in the context of China being known for famines and various agricultural disasters throughout its time. It’s a key reason for peasant events such as the Boxers, and the migrations of peoples to Manchuria or SE Asia

Jess

Pronunciation correction: It's Yan'An, not Ya'Nan.

Shaun Scandrett

Well done, again. As much as I love all of the regular EHTV fair I am very much appreciating the light being shone on the greater world.
