Dear Patrons,

We're very pleased to share our new video - The Spread of Christianity. Charting the spread of Christianity from obscure local sect to the most popular religion on Earth, this is a fast-moving and dramatic journey through 2,000 years of history!

Discussions of faith and religious history can be sensitive topics - but we hope you'll agree that this is a fascinating and important subject, well worth the exploration. As previously announced, we'll have a similar video on the spread of Islam soon.

We didn't want to delay the Patreon release, but a quick mention that we are still working on a few fixes and improvements These mostly concern marking of Catholic and Protestant areas on the global map. Areas we will improve:

French Catholics in Canada. Presbyterians in Scotland. Slower Christian expansion across North and South America. Protestants in Jamaica, Northern Ireland, India and China. Much less Christians overall in India and China.

As I'm sure you will appreciate, animating the spread of a religion across 2,000 years is a challenging task, and can never be an exact science. The same goes for state borders. So we hope you will excuse a few 'approximations' along the way. And while we have put a ton of research into the map, if you do spot any glaring mistakes, please do let us know!

We hope you enjoy the video, and look forward to your comments. Thanks as always for your amazing support!

Thank you so much for this. It means a lot on a personal level.

Christian Keogh

Great video. Love from a man named Christian

Robbie Farnsworth

Your Nebula upload is missing music from 3:35 - 21:26, heads up!

Jacob Smith

Great video! Semi-related piece of random information is that the United States Congress is partially modeled on the Session of the Presbyterian Church, to the point where the British called the American Revolution "That Presbyterian Rebellion"

Vincent Gerochi

It’s crazy to see world history in this format. You can see the collective minds of human civilization evolving. From worshipping multiple gods (even certain humans as gods), to worshipping the god of love. It’s not the final form of the human ideal, for there may be a greater *highest ideal* than love (somewhere out there). But it’s definitely an improvement from the fractured pagan religions. Ultimately, it’s an evolution of thought. And seeing it progress on a map across time is nuts.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you so much! We're on it, will be fixed very soon.

Alexandros

As an Orthodox Christian I really appreciated this!

Anderson Rochford

This is fantastic. Thank you for creating such detailed and captivating historical recounts.

MitchyCool

The U.K. is going to be mostly Muslim within this century.

Kevin Xu

Very British of y’all to talk about England’s schism but not the Hussites, I feel like they should’ve deserved a mention as a pre-Lutheran conflict that resulted in crusades. Same with the French Revolution’s reforms and attacks on the Church

Leonardo Espino

Good video. Although I did enjoyed it and maybe because of it’s length, I think that two events that could have made it to the video (and as they aid to the history of the religion) was the crucifixión of peter in rome on the spot that is now Vatican city and the expulsión of Christian misionareis in Japan and how that influenced japan to shut their doors and remain isolated. Idk if adding this events conflicted the overall presentation as to how those events shaped the history of the religion but since you included the 1857 Indian rebellion I think that Japanese expulsion is note to highlight as well while peter crucifixion also adds to the history of why rome is the home of the pope and also he was the first pope.

Kevin Xu

Interesting to learn that Christianity arrived in China during the Tang! It was a cosmopolitan time where there were also Jewish communities in places like Kaifeng Though it seems to me Islam remains the major abrahamic religion in Chinese cultures, from the Hui in the north and center of China, to the mixing of cultures in Muslim Indonesia and Malaysia with southern Chinese peoples

EpicHistoryTV

Fair enough! We had to be very strict on what we included, this video could easily have been hours longer. The Reformation we had to mention, and the English Reformation was an indulgence we allowed ourselves.. All 10 seconds of it!

EpicHistoryTV

Yes, all good suggestions. We had to be super strict on what we included to get through 2000 years.

Kevin Xu

I’ll give it a pass since you do spend a good 30 seconds on the First Great Awakening 😉. The Americans will be happy(except for the Mormons, but Johnny Harris and Cyncial Historian got that covered!)

Samuel Pattinasarane

Thank you so much for this Toby and Team! Truly appreciate the research and effort that goes into another great video. On a personal level, I think it is a bit rushed and perhaps would have been better to be broken down to two parts to allow for a more thorough elaboration that covers the comments mentioned above. Especially in the modern era, where there's little elaboration on the story of the Pentecostal movement, Billy Graham, Televangelism, Papacy of John Paul II just to name a few. Hopefully this is something that can be considered for the next videos.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Samuel! There was a great temptation to keep adding extra detail to the video, but I do believe that a shorter, succinct video is the way to go. Also we wanted to remain tightly focused on the spread of Christianity, rather than a general history of Christianity, as much as possible.

Nova-Brienne

I was recently studying the Naga ethnic groups and their aims for independence from India, and it was interesting to see that many of them are Baptist Christians despite the region they live in and the situation from the government. Even as a non-christian it's something that I've been reading a lot about lately, so this video was helpful to visualize it's spread. Once again impressive work.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

This is beyond interesting!!!! & honestly this could be a great entry into Your crusader series! Could bring about the 2nd 3rd & 4th more epic material for Our destined Epic future!!!!! No pun intended even though it will sound good God do I love this channel! The rise of Islam is going to be phenomenal so excited! Could We possibly see the rise of Buddhism? 😃 Toby, Charles & the whole Team I know that I thank Ya’ll constantly but You deserve to hear it! Much love & sincerest regards Lord John 💚

George Haines

Hi Toby, fantastic video as always! I'd love to see a mention of the Taiping Rebellion as this was an incredibly major event in China, and its leader thought of himself as Jesus' younger brother!

Leylan

Speaking Religion, and about Christianity spread, what about Jude, what about Hindu, what about Islam, what about Buddistm do they have mission ?. Early access to Epic History Religion is good but need more ... EPIC in all Religion including Pagan and others or maybe in category non believers if I speak correctly.

IHW

Not a Christian myself (nor have I been enticed by any religion thus far), but how religions such as this spreads are nonetheless astonishing stories. It seems almost impossible to imagine how such a small movement (essentially a minor sect of Judaism in its early days) gained the momentum it did. It's something which we may never fully understand. Great work as always by the team! Also, on the map 'Nicaea' is labelled 'Nicene'. Is this correct? I imagine 'Nicene' is the equivalent of saying 'Parisian' to denote something from Paris, but I could be wrong.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Isaac! And for spotting the Nicaea typo, we'll get that fixed, and you've won another typo prize! We'll be in touch.

EpicHistoryTV

We're just going to do 'the big two' for now. There's a specific reason for this, which is that we are not aiming to tell the history of the religions, but rather the story of their global spread through conquest, colonisation, conversion, etc, over a long historical period. These two are in a category of their own for that.

Blake

Very cool great job...

Covfefe Dotard

I’m an atheist but this is also another great video by you guys

MitchyCool

I very much hope you're right about.

Shaunsky

Beginning of Canadian missionaries should be yellow for catholic not Protestant

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Shaunsky, yes we've got that one in the notes, French Catholics in colonial Canada.

Blagovest Tsvetkov

A great job in production, as always. As a regular Bulgarian viewer of the channel, however, I have to express slight disappointment that there was no mention of the medieval Bulgarian empires, especially given their crucial role in influencing Eastern Orthodox Christianity, literacy, and culture. I am aware that this is a high level overview and there isn't space for many details, but at least a mention would have sufficed, such as with many of the other medieval realm conversions listed in the video.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Blagovest - and apologies - there were many important things that we didn't mention.

SCL

Only EHTV could cover something as grand as the rise or Christianity in such a short time with such quality!

MarbleHit

Production, Quality, Presentation, Animation, Sound, Drawing, Pictures and many more aspects that im not gonna bother writing, everything is astonishingly immaculate. Thank you Toby for continuing to amaze us in every way possible <3

Dan.Gryn

Very interesting ! Thank you!

MariusG

Is there a possibility of covering the battles of the 1st and second coalition that didn't include napoleon? After your videos indicating how these fronts affected his army it would be interesting to see how and why.😁

EpicHistoryTV

We do actually have a First Coalition battle coming up. Stay tuned for an announcement in the next couple of weeks..

CP

Such a lovely canter through the music scores we know so well! Hopefully this makes the cut for the next round of uploads!

Hugo

When are you putting this on YouTube? I really want to send this to my mom but she’s not on Patreon.

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Hugo, YouTube release is scheduled for 16 May.

TheAirCam

Thank you Epic History TV! I understand you're very limited on time but I'd like to point out that there were numerous communities that didn't submit to the Catholic Church before the Reformation like the Waldensias; Sabbath-keeping communities and others grouped together as 'Heretics' since the Messiah's death and resurrection. I feel this should be mentioned please.

TheAirCam

Also, on a random note, I did notice that the Russian Empire's early spread in western America and Alaska wasn't shown on the map. Did they spread Orthodox Christianity?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Wezza. Sorry, pressures of time when we've got to cover 2000 years of history in 20 minutes! Also our focus is really on the historical phenomenon of the spread of Christianity, rather than schisms and heresies within the religion (although we do mention a couple of the most important ones).

EpicHistoryTV

I don't think the Russian presence was ever anything more than a handful of remote settlements, organising the fur trade. Certainly no large scale colonisation.

TheAirCam

Lastly, I’d like to know your thoughts on Brendan the navigator. I know Leif Ericsson is credited with being the first European to set foot in North America, however an Irishman beat Christopher Columbus by almost 1000 years! Saint Brendan (also known as Brendan the navigator) was a monk from County Kerry who lived in the late 5th and 6th centuries and detailed long voyages across the Atlantic visiting volcanoes (Iceland), icebergs (Greenland) and also tropical islands (Bahamas). He sailed in a boat made of animal skin and there's more evidence than you might think. A few decades ago, they found cave drawings of Biblical quotes in an old Irish language. Spanish explorers 1000 years later discovered a tribe of Irish origin. Yes, an Irish-native American tribe in what is now the Southern USA! They're called the Duhare tribe. Tall, red hair, pale skin. They divided the year into 12 months, had technology beyond other native tribes like pyrotechnics (sparklers and rockets). They made cheese out of deer milk which the Irish did before cow farming was common. The Vikings, who are now known to have explored North America long before Christopher Columbus, described the Irish as “able seamen who traveled extensively and great distances, as far as Iceland in the 10th century." Now, if the Norse are describing the Irish as competent seamen, I'd say there's few higher compliments 😁 Sorry for the long message

TheAirCam

I agree there was no large scale colonisation, however it was enough of a presence for the Russians to sell Alaska to the USA in 1867.

TheAirCam

That’s understandable, thanks anyway.

EpicHistoryTV

It sounds an intriguing theory! Some of those Irish monks certainly made extraordinary voyages, but I think reaching America may be difficult to prove..

Jacob Smith

I don't know if this has already been asked, but will this video be posted on YouTube? My dad is a retired Presbyterian minister whose focus in Seminary was this very topic and he is interested in seeing this video, but he does not have a Patreon account

MrAH2010

Excellent video, I know that you had to squeeze a huge amount of Epic History into a concise video. Very well paced and interesting. After the Rise of China series wraps, perhaps a video on the Taiping rebellion might be considered. If it's in the realm of specialty of your Chinese research group. It's technically Christian in the loosest, most heretical/synchretic way that's fascinating. Neither the movement or the war is something hardly covered at all.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Yes, Taiping rebellion would certainly make an interesting future video.

Shayan Etemadi

All main religions created and spread to other continents from middle east and even in this very day out people are most superstitious people while Europe after medieval age developed and did a lot of discoveries we till this day are engulfed in religious wars, superstition.

Teodor Kolev

Thank you Epic History TV! Great video! I know you are had a very short time to pack everything in. It’s not a criticism, I was wondering did the Balkan spread of Christianity ever get considered? It would be nice sub-video category exploring these spreads as it relates to how the Balkan States got converted to Christianity. Especially their insistence and struggle to be independent from the Eastern Roman (Greek) Exarchate in Constantinople. With the creation Glagolitic Alpahabet which led to the Bulgarian Old Church Slavonic and how that was used to spread Christianity among Slavs and other tribes Eurasian tribes and then the creation of the Cyrillic Alphabet which led to an even bigger spread and further understanding. Because after all Vladimir The Great and his descendants won’t have spread Christianity that much if there wasn’t already translated into something the local people understood.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Teodor! Yes, a very good point. All I can say is - we set out to cover 2,000 years in 20 minutes, so we had to move very fast, and make some very tough decisions. There are inevitably many simplifications and important omissions. Interesting point about the alphabets. It is an interesting contrast to western Europe, as I understand it, where services were in a language (Latin) that was unintelligible to most of the congregation, who were also illiterate.

Teodor Kolev

I completely understand, and I don’t want to take anything away from the team at Epic History you all truly make the most breathtaking, informative and interesting history videos I have ever seen. It was just a thought and I appreciate the time you took to reply, I wasn’t expecting it! Precisely yes it’s the other side of the coin. Would be quite an interesting topic to delve into whenever you find it reasonable because it would be fantastic to see your view on it.

EpicHistoryTV

You're very kind. We'd have to do a lot more reading before we took on that topic!

Gio

When will this video be released on YouTube?

Hugo

Any updates on the rise of Christianity video YouTube release?
