Dear Patrons,

Welcome to the world premiere of our new video, 'How Did Islam Spread?' Like our recent Christianity video, this is another epic tale told across many centuries, as we chart Islam's rise from a small community in Arabia to the world's second largest religion, with 1.9 billion followers. It's a story of conquests, mystics, and medieval trade networks - and we hope you find it as fascinating and enjoyable to watch as we did to make.

Special thanks to our researcher and writer Ismail Elmokadem, and to our historical consultant Andrew Marsham, Professor of Classical Arabic Studies at the University of Cambridge.

We have tried to be as accurate as possible with the global map, but as you may imagine, across 1400 years of history some details have been simplified. But do let us know if you spot any particularly egregious mistakes!

Next cabs off the rank: Rise of China Part 4, ULTRA Part 2, and WW2: 1931-1934.

Stay tuned for updates, and thank you for your amazing support!

Toby

I really enjoyed this one and the spread of christianity. Fanastic, how you summarize such a complex topic in 25min. Yet, I wonder what about the other religions? Would be amazing to cover them as well and have a series, wouldn‘t it? (I know the pipeline of upcoming videos is already stuffed)

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Jérôme! I think we going to leave it there for the time being, with regards to religions. I feel we've covered the 'big two', in terms of expansion and followers! And as you say, so many things in the pipeline.

Jérôme F. Kaeslin

That‘s fair, yes. Looking forward to the upcoming videos. :-)

Crazy to see how Islam was carried by Civil War wherever it goes

Terry

Excellent effort. It would have been helpful if you had translated the Arabic terms you used in the first part of the video. The only mistake I saw was to call Algeria and Libya countries in the 19th century, when they did not exist until post colonialism.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Terry. They're labelled there as regions, rather than post-colonial states - those two names go back a long way.

Hugo

Hi, great work! When will the Christianity video be on YouTube? I’ve been waiting for it to share with family members.

Stuart Carver

By mouth….and by the sword! Always nice to have the occasional expansive global topic

Awais Ishtiaq

Brilliant video Keep up the good work

Mohammed Alsaadoon

??? Christianity had a three century long period known only as "The Wars of Religion" between Protestant and Catholic. Human beings just love to fight.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Hugo! Christianity video will go out on YT on 11 July.

Hugo

Great, thanks!

Kevin Xu

The 30 years war as Mohammed pointed out… Also the Catholic Church led insurrection in the Vendée manned by peasants frightened of the secular reforms of the only religious and social service institution they knew of

Kevin Xu

I’d wish you’d expand the Islam spread in China to gansu and yunnan, both provinces have a great diversity of Turkic and Sino-Tibetan Muslim communities. In addition to urban areas like Niu Jie in Beijing Eatai_HalalFoodie on instagram is a tour guide who shows many of these places if you wish to learn more

Jakob Barron

Good video, but what I want to know is when are they coming out on YouTube? The Christianity video was so long ago I forgot about it

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

On My day off today I spent the entirety of My afternoon enjoying 1st The rise & fall of the Abbasids, Islams Golden Age I have fallen in love with it & followed it up with the spread of Islam the music artwork stunning colors & sounds everything was beyond beautiful & must thank You sincerely for this. Honestly a follow up involving the 2nd 3rd & 4th Crusades or a deeper dive into the great schism 💚 or even a series on the Kings Queens & rulers of Egypt. Omg talk about Epic as always many thanks & sincerest regards Lord John 🇮🇩💚🇭🇺

The Christianity video will be on YT on 11th July. This one will be close behind it, likely one week later.

Lovely new Format! Very educating and well put together like always! I believe I did spot a small typo. At 5:51 the Battle of Karbala is shown, however, on the Map its written as Kerbala.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Kevin. Certainly a very interesting part of the world! If you're referring to the colour spread on the map, to represent the spread of Islam, this can only be a very rough indication, and is generally used only to indicate areas where Islam is a majority religion or very major presence. On that basis, from the research, we felt that Xinjiang was about as far east as we could take it.

Kevin Xu

Very fair! Though lack of majority my still belie certain large ethnic groups like the Hui. Even within the Muslim community folks sometimes ask Eatai, who looks Chinese, how is parents reacted to his “conversion” and he has to go “well we’ve been Muslim for generations” 😅 Though of course I might not be aware of Muslim minorities in places like Europe so there are bindspots on a world so large

Попов Михаил

Hello, is there any plan to make a video about the Battle of Camperdown in the future?

thomas griffin

Hi Toby, how’s the Revolutionary War series coming along? Looking forward to more episodes!

EpicHistoryTV

It's coming along well! There will be a bit of a longer delay before Episode 4 is out, but we hope it will be worth waiting for! Make sure to keep an eye on our newsletter for updates and timescales.

Eli Khanam

While I don't consider myself Muslim, my family would love this overview of its history.

This score needs to be released!

You should have added Indian subcontinent to areas of Islamic rule. The Mughals were not the first Muslim empire to hold swathes of the subcontinent
