Dear Patron,

We're delighted to bring you the second part of our documentary on the Battle of Verdun. In this episode we get up close to the big guns, explore the hellish conditions on the front lines, and examine how French forces managed to stay true to General Nivelle's famous rallying cry, "lls ne passeront pas!"

It's been a complex project, so we thank you for patience and hope that the final result is worth the wait. Thanks again to Gio, David, Harry, James and Jesse for all their hard work across the project.

Poll Result

As many of you will recall, Verdun was itself chosen by a Patreon vote, so it's fitting that as this series closes, we can announce the result of another video topic poll...

It was a close run thing, but with 36% of the vote, Raid on the Medway came out top. It's a fascinating and under-explored operation with deep ramifications, so we're excited to get going! Thank you to all Citizens who cast their vote.

That's all for now. We hope you enjoy the conclusion of Verdun, and thanks as always for your amazing support.

What a fanastic video. I have always wanted to visit Verdun so hopefully I can make the trip in the next few years. Hopefully the sheer scale and horror of this battle may never be seen again.

Robert Sawers

Such an incredible piece of work by all involved! This will be hard to beat by your team or anyone else. Using actual footage from this battlefield is comparable to the great PBS documentary’s of the past few decades. This is a documentary to be proud of! I look forward to watching more quality content from your team in future endeavors! 📚📚📖👍🍾

Timothy Fisher

This is a fantastic video, but I’m hoping that you will always use AI as little as possible.

Jacob Smith

Since Isandlawana came in at a very close 2nd, any chance you might do both?

Victor Deleon

My God, the quality of these videos is better than multimillion dollar hollywood productions. Bravo 👏🏼

Admiral Sith

During the Raid on the Medway, the stern of the HMS Royal Charles was taken. I saw it on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and what I felt as a Brit must be what some Italians feel seeing the Mona Lisa in Paris.

Mohammed Alsaadoon

Excellent miniseries. I never knew there were still areas designated Zone Rouge till this day. Even if it has been left to nature, I'm surprised how little of it is is covered by trees and vegetation.

Shaun Scandrett

Another masterpiece as always. One minor criticism is Charles' absolute butchery of some simple French words, especially at the end with "Zone Rouge". Perhaps some simple linguistics coaching in the future for non-native words.

When I was young, my father told me a story. During the Battle of France in 1940, the French government secretly sent an envoy to negotiate with Joseph Stalin, on the hope that he would attack Hitler from the east. After a long period of consideration, the Soviet dictator agreed. However, news of the French capitulation arrived just after the French envoy's plane had taken off. To avoid facing the might of the Third Reich alone, Stalin immediately scrambled the Red Army's fighters to shoot down the French envoy. And in the end, all signed documents were destroyed in the burning plane wreckage. Is this story true in history? (I am not surprised at all that Commies would murder envoys to eat back their words.)

I guess zone should sound a bit more like zon or zohn but rouge, ils ne passeront pas and j’ai fait Verdun sounds right, at least to my ear?

EpicHistoryTV

We have a lot of projects in the pipeline right now, but it’s not impossible..

EpicHistoryTV

“Butchery”! Oh dear. Well we do our best, and research all pronunciations before recording. We specifically listened to several French people saying “zone”.

Stuart Carver

A wonderful Franco Scots milieu!

The Fort Douaumont aerial photo comparisons before and after the battle were really striking.. not to mention those losses per day.. Amazing production as always!

Stuart Carver

It’s not true. Myth or heresy at best, conspiracy theory at worst. If it were it would be in Soviet archives, French government records, German intelligence reports, memoirs, or post-war scholarship. None, as far as I know exist.
