Here it finally is, the latest episode in the Napoleonic Wars series. This one covers a lot of ground, as Napoleon rebuilds his army after the Russia disaster, and takes on the Sixth Coalition in Germany. I hope you enjoy it, and do please share feedback. This is a much more complex episode than usual, but I've done my best to pack in all the crucial information, without getting too bogged down in the dates of various treaties and the smaller engagements.

To give you some insight into the production process, for this video the audio alone takes 3 days  - selecting music, sound effects, recording and editing Charles's narration and mixing them all together. It's only because of your support on Patreon that I can give my videos this sort of love and attention, so thank you again for your support.

The next episode is, of course, the Battle of the Nations, Leizpig 1813, and work will begin on the script next week!

edit: for those waiting for the YouTube link, it is here. (please do not share or post until after Friday!)

You ROCK Toby! The BEST Video Producer-Narrator DUO: Toby and Charles Nove 👍🏻. Keep up the GREAT Job. Never Back it down.

Gordian III

Brilliant narriation, music and graphics as always ! The videos just keep getting better and better. Absolutely stunning !

allen vikram

That was excellent! Will you be covering the Vitoria campagin and Wellington's advance into Spain before the end of the series?

Synion

An absolutely fantastic video. Will this series end with the video after the battle of Leipzig, or is there a consideration of redoing Waterloo?

Alexandre Evrard

An amazing video as always ! Are you planning to do the Campaign of France ?

Bob LobLaw

You're the first person I've ever done Patreon with, and it has been worth every penny. Great videos everytime, I watch each one at least 5+ times.

M. M.

Feels really good to see your own name appear in the credits. Worth every penny, and time to bump up that contribution per-video. Excellent work as always. I look forward to the Part 2!

Viktor Horký

I really hate that I know how the battle will end :(

Richard Fernandes

Hi Alexander. Yes, once He finishes with The current Campaign, He'll make one of Napoleon France Defense 1814. Have a nice day.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! I'm not covering the Vitoria campaign this time around, but more Napoleonic videos (which would include Vitoria) will be an option in a future vote...

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! There'll be also be a video on the 1814 campaign in France. A new version of Waterloo is something we may vote on, tbc.

Sean Leavey

Yet another fantastic video! The incredible attention to detail of your videos is what I love so much. Keep up the amazing work!

Alex Myatt

Hey Toby, I can't wait to watch it. So proud to be a supporter of your great work. Is there any chance of getting a YouTube version of the video? I only ask because my friends and I love to watch it on the YouTube app on the TV. Thanks!

M. M.

Thank you for some of the best documentaries I've ever seen.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Alex! The YouTube version isn't quite ready but I'll share it here when it is, probably 3-4 days.

Nuka Cola

Literally another masterpiece, keep doing what you're doing man! (:

Ioannis Kouriotis

Nice job as always, pal. I'm a patreon for the last 2 years and I really enjoy your videos. Unfortunatelly I can't pledge a lot for the time. I hope in the future I can't donate more. Keep up the good work.

Walide

Please do the Italians early campaigns.

Ellis Martin

It's a bit pitiful the British could send all that material, but couldn't send human bodies, at least in any form that wasn't Walcheren in nature.

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Brilliant as always Toby. So the new strategy was 'if Napoleon is present, refuse to engage'. Why he chose to send Davout away for what I understand became a useless siege in Hamburg is beyond me. By the way, I recently finished watching a show called 'Soviet Storm: WW2 In The East'. It wasn't your name mentioned in the credits was it?

jk kim

Mein gott take my money!! We love your channel.

Respublik

I personally felt like this video slightly lacked battle animations (1 more) rather then just pictures. That slightly interfered with my attention level throughout the episode.

Erik Drysdale

Great backgrounder for the upcoming battle!

Joseph Dell

Just became a patron! Been loving the Napoleonic videos! Keep up the good work!

Resident Elect

As ever, what a compelling and intriguing documentary. Every single episode is an education and well worth the wait. Upon learning about the "Marie-Louise" conscripts, I was reminded of the Volkssturm militia pressed into service by Hitler during the death throws of the Axis powers in Europe, and even British recruiting officers turning a blind eye to excited boy soldiers, no older than fourteen during the opening years of the Great War. No lessons learned, no consideration given to the impact the horrors of war would have on boys so young, and a complete and utter disregard for young life, all in the name of Empire building.

Jerry Johnston

It took the allies so long to learn the lesson of Fabian strategy as Rome did against Hannibal. Facing him in a defensive battle is exactly what Napoleon anticipates and plans for. But when they advance and then suddenly retreat, it frustrated the hell out of him and threw his plans in disarray. That left him wide open to attack from the rear and behind. This led to him being surrounded at Leipzig. Napoleon was so frustrated and obsessed with going all in on his bets that he did not know how to play it safe anymore. His ego would not allow him to let go of his German and Dalmatian possessions temporarily to defeat the allies in detail (which is how he won Germany in the first place). Nope, he'd rather believe himself invincible and fight everyone all at once. I can just imagine the exacerbation of his marshalls when Napoleon said they were staying at Leipzig to fight it out. LOL!

Line_of_Blood

Great video as always Toby !! I was really hoping that the battle of Dresden would of been animated, it was one of napoleon’s last great victories. I know you said that you wanted to keep the video to a certain length, but it is hard for me to consider Dresden a minor engagement. How much money would it take for you to consider to do the battle of Dresden cause I would totally donate that! If you are willing to do it, you can do a poll if people are willing to wait longer, I think the wait would be worth it!

EpicHistoryTV

I hear you, although when thinking about the format of the series, I had to commit to no more than one major battle sequence per year of the wars. They take a huge amount of time to plan and animate.

EpicHistoryTV

The use of Davout is interesting. If I remember correctly, Andrew Roberts describes this as a terrible misuse of his best Marshal. But hindsight is a wonderful thing. Lieven - much more of a military specialist - points out that the northern sector was crucially important to Napoleon, for political, economic and military reasons, and so he needed his best Marshal for the job.

EpicHistoryTV

And yes, I spent a year creating the English version of Soviet Storm back in... 2010? In fact I came up with the title, which I'm still rather pleased with!

EpicHistoryTV

Well don't forget the British had a large force in Spain, as well as manning the largest and most powerful navy in the world. Historically Britain, as an island, had always had a small army, and prioritised its navy.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Raymond! When I planned the series, unfortunately I had to decide to commit to animating only one battle per year, or the project would become too massive. I do need to keep in mind that some viewers are keen for me to move onto other topics at some stage. In addition, although Dresden was a remarkable achievement, I don't actually find it very interesting tactically - the battle was really decided by superior French morale and Allied command bungling. However, at the end of the series 'more Napoleon' will probably be one of the voting options, so never say never...

EpicHistoryTV

We might well return to some of the earlier campaigns..

EpicHistoryTV

It's just great to have your long-term support Ioannis, thank you.

Sean Fitzgerald

Another great video, as always. I think this one is especially important as I believe the 1813 campaign doesn't get the attention it deserves compared to Napoleon's retreat from Russia or Waterloo.

Jakob

I mean, i’m lost for words, it doesn’t get any better than this, BRILLIANT!

amanko13

Quality beyond measure. I want every minute of history to br covered like this.

Michael Maley

Another phenomenal video as always, I can't wait for Leipzig! I do have a question though. Do we know at all what the allies thought of Britain's contribution to the war? Were they frustrated at all at Britain's relative reluctance to send armies to the continent throughout the wars, or did they feel that the actions of the British navy and the material support was sufficient?

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Not to apply pressure, but you converting that series into what you do here would be amazing.

EpicHistoryTV

I have given it thought. We will be visiting WW2 as some stage..

Fran Serrano Barrera

Awesome, the music is incredible, it really captures the emotion and tension of the moment, narrator's voice is also really awesome. Congrats, this aong the invasion of russia are my fav episodes.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Michael! It's an interesting question. I'm not an expert on the diplomacy of this period, but I can tell you that relations between most members of the Sixth Coalition were strained, to put it mildly. Remember that Britain had recently been at war with both Sweden and Russia (though the wars were largely bloodless) and deeply hostile to Prussia, which had seized Hanover in 1805 (which belonged to the Hanoverian kings of England). So there was not a great deal of trust between members of the coalitions. There was also a feeling in some quarters that Britain was profiting from the war, seizing French and Dutch colonies and maritime trade, while its allies were left to face the Napoleonic juggernaut. On the flip side, British politicians were concerned that their enormous financial contributions led only to defeat after defeat.

Nibor9

Which music track did you use at the start? I couldn't find it in the filmstro samples.

Nibor9

Thanks

Benjamin Ellis

Toby, is there specific names of the songs used in this video? I really like them and would like to know what they’re called. Thanks!

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Benjamin, in each video I tend to use 10-14 themes from Filmstro, which are then individually tailored to the video, so effectively each soundtrack is a unique composition. I'm in talks with Filmstro to hopefully make some of the soundtracks available on streaming services.. In the meantime if you have browse the Filmstro 'Action & Conflict' section you'll find most of the themes used across the series.

Benjamin Ellis

Thanks! and also can’t wait for the battle of Leipzig!

Walter C

Toby, I have watched each of your videos several times. The Napoleon series is the best I have ever seen. Keep up your quality and passion, it is truly special.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Walt, that's extremely kind and much appreciated.

Dan Jaggers

I have to say this series has been very well put together since I first started watching it in late 2018 I believe, from Austerlitz to the upcoming Leipzig, each episode has only gotten better and better in terms of production, dialogue, and what I feel is the star of each video, the battlemaps, just good all round quality. On another note, congratulations on achieving over 600k subscribers on youtube! Let's hope that before the year is over you finally manage to achieve over 1M.

EpicHistoryTV

That's very kind, thank you. And here's to the 1M! Currently working on the Battle of Leipzig script, hopefully will be a good one..

Patrick wilcher

Your napoleon series is literally the greatest group of videos I have ever seen. Never before have I found myself cheering and shouting for certain sides to win in a documentary like I was at a foot ball game. Plz cover almost every battle of the naponleonic wars, I beg off you! Makes my month everytime we give us a new one!!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Patrick! It's great to hear how much you've been enjoying the series. Currently working on the Battle of Leipzig, which looks like it might be a monster episode..

Richard Fernandes

Hi Toby! @epichistorytv How are You? When We'll receive some updates here about The Next Video of The Leipzig Battle? Good Night

Richard Fernandes

Thank You Toby! I am tuned in for your Next Piece of Art Video as always.
