Here it is, the long-time-coming next video in the Napoleonic Wars series. This is probably the longest and most complex one so far - four days of battle, nearly half a million troops, seventeen music tracks... Here's what it looks like in the editing software, for those interested in such things...

I think I'm also right in saying - this is the most detailed English-language video about the battle that's ever been produced. (Let me know if you know different). And it has been possible thanks to your support.

I hope you enjoy the video, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts. One thing to mention - you are the very first people in the world to see this video apart from me - so if you spot any typos or little mistakes that I've missed, do please let me know, and I shall try to correct them before the YouTube release. (But don't tell me about any pronunciation mistakes - we did our best, and now Charles is on holiday!)

Don't forgot to follow Epic History TV on social media for regular posts about history, usually related to our videos.

Thanks again for your support. I'll be back with more updates soon.

Toby

EDIT:

Here's the link for the YouTube version (with various fixes thanks to eagle-eyed Patreon supporters, plus a 5% better bridge explosion (added a bit of camera shake)). Not live until 1600 GMT so please keep private until then!

Good Grace the video we have all been waiting for :D

Harry Watkinson

Very much looking forward to watching this!

Gordian III

i already love the video ! the music was just absolutely stunning ! Can not wait for Vauchamps, Mormant and more ! It will prove that he can still pull of spectacular victories !

Joseph Dell

Found some typos at the 3:30 Mark. The French corps numbers have too many zeros reading 40,0000

Line_of_Blood

Awesome video about to watch this! Kind of want people’s opinion on Napoleon’s top 3 marshals?

Christopher Lutz

So excited! This is the last bit of the Napoleonic Wars I have yet to learn about since I began studying it

Resident Elect

Excellent! I've just been ordered to baton down the hatches for 12 weeks by the NHS thanks to being old and unhealthy lol this is a great morale booster! Three cheers for EHTV!!!

Respublik

My god, you're right, these 30 minutes were grand packed! If Napoleon's cavalry would have reached allies tent could they actually reach all those royals or is this just the wrong impression?

Jack Dames

Spectacular as always. Many of the French garrisons at 3:30 seem rather large though!

Azuolas L. Adlys

this will be shown in history lessons across the schools

Ken Nakadomari

The timing of this video couldn’t of come at a better a time. I have a huge smile on my face and a bag of popcorn ready as I sit on my couch in isolation. Cheering on all your success from Vancouver.

Stuart Carver

When you’re waiting for the video to drop, fall asleep, and find out it’s been out for half an hour 😮😮😮😮😮 isolation in Cheltenham just became a whole lot more Epic. Also what was the rational of placing Austrian units on the other side of the river. If all it did was hinder movement why did they think it would be a good idea?

Nicolas Marin

What you do is amazing Epic History, thank you so much for this channel, I am amazed every time you upload a new video. The importance of work like this is truly invaluable. Greetings from Brazil :)

Jack Dames

Also at 30:40 I believe Mecklenburg was at war with France too at this time?

EpicHistoryTV

Well they would most likely have ridden to safety. Schwarzenberg in fact changed horses, to his English thoroughbred, to lead a charge against the approaching French cavalry. As ever, there's not a lot of detail but one suspects he led them towards the enemy but not in the final charge to contact.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Nicolas! Greeting back from Gloucestershire UK.

EpicHistoryTV

That's a very good spot, thank you! Mecklenburg-Schwerin is highlighted as a coalition ally but then fades out by mistake, with the French allies. Fixed.

EpicHistoryTV

Well a video ranking all 24 marshals is going to be one of the options at the next vote..

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Gordian, particularly glad you liked the music, spent most of Sunday choosing and mixing the tracks!

Joseph Dell

No problem! Love your videos and they are of the highest quality, happy to help!

Stephen C

Is there a YouTube link, I love getting the videos on the bigger screen!?

EpicHistoryTV

I’ll share it as soon as it’s ready, takes a bit longer as need to wait on sponsor approval.

Shaun Scandrett

Another top-notch episode. Thanks for all your hard work.

Eiko Streitz

One of the battles I am best informed of... and yet, I was really amazed and exited about every move the different units did. Great work!

Adem Couper

Wow amazing video! Probably the best one i've ever seen. So much detail. Really impressive, keep it up!

Leo Richards

Just made my day very Epic. Thank you ehtv for your amazing work.

Flo

I'm French and i paid to watch a British narrator describe one of the most tragic day of our history. And yet, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your work. :)

Натан Уолш

The legend that is EHTV producing a video about the Legend that is Leipzig. Symbolic and great!

Sitraka Forler

Plus the body-guards of those monarchs would've certainly fight long enough to wait renforts i think ^^

Sitraka Forler

Awesome vidéo !!! Nicely done and very clear ! This defeat was may be worse than Waterloo for the Emperor of the French had the choice of peace just before starting this mess...

Walide

That was a sad day for Europe. The day where the old order won.

Fennec Fox

Another fantastic production. Thank you for all your hard work. When I was a boy and teenager I was always interested in the Seven years war and American Civil War. I always enjoyed the Napoleonic era, but your videos have really made me get into it in ernest. Have you ever read "The Campaigns of Napoleon" by David Chandler? Fantastic long burn of a book.

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

There's a lot of things I could say right now Toby, but I think it will suffice to say that you've excelled yourself yet again. As a postman resting after an exhausting 9 hour shift this was a truly joyous way to end the day. Look forward to 1814! Take care during this difficult time!

Tobias Novacek

Beautiful video! You really made my day with this masterpiece after some long & tough hours of work today :) thank you. Will you continue with Napoleon or is this series over?

Veng

Incredible content, as always. You’re the best in the business, no doubt. Thank you

bozojazz

Thank you so much for this. You have really raised the bar taking this on. The music selection really enhances this one. Thank you again for your superb work and masterful creativity! Can't wait for the 1814 campaign!

Erik Drysdale

Once again amazing. I hope you keep making these types of videos for the 30 years!

Ming-Yun Lam

better than my history teacher

Habib Moflehi

Another fantastic video as usual. What's coming up next?

Ryan Baxter

I feel this will go down as EHTV's Magnum Opus

Jacques Mourant

AMAZING. I have never seen this detailed of an account along with the visual aids. As a visual learner, I really appreciate the combined narrative and detailed visuals to help illustrate the Napoleon campaigns. Excellent work.

Jakob

Brilliant work, it feels like I’m there with them observing the battle. Must be because of the effects from the music, I’m mind blown. Brilliant!😁

kokoo

03:20, one more '0' for the number of Corps 1,8,10?

Stuart Carver

A 24.45 why do we zoom in on the bridge over the pleisse river I thought the Elster bridge was the bridge crossing the Elster river over to Lindenau? Which bridge was which?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Habib, Napoleon's 1814 French campaign next..

EpicHistoryTV

The rivers and bridges were very complex and meandering around western Leipzig in 1813 (the landscape has all changed now) so a bit of simplification was necessary in the map. The White Elster and Pleisse both ran through the western suburbs. The bridge at Lindenau is across the River Luppe.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Josh. I haven't actually read that version, but I have his 'Illustrated Napoleon' which is effectively a much shorter version, plus his collected essays 'On the Napoleonic Wars', which are very interesting.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Tobias! One more video in this series - France 1814 - then we'll have a vote..

EpicHistoryTV

Schwarzenberg was trying for a quite complex, enveloping manoeuvre, which meant splitting his army on both sides of the Pleisse. The Russians thought this was overly ambitious, better to concentrate their forces for a massive attack from the south, straight towards Leipzig. In warfare, at a tactical level, the rule invariably seems to be simple = good.

EpicHistoryTV

Merci Florian! Well, if it helps, Charles is Scottish, so the Auld Alliance etc..

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Sitraka, yes I think this is the decisive moment for the Napoleonic project.. Very neglected battle among English-speaking historians, simply because not many British were there!

Giancarlo Andujo

Even though Leipzig was the end for Napoleon. It sounds like we have one more battle before the series is over. LOL

Sitraka Forler

Yes ! (and by the way i personnatly have to say thank you because you made me reconsider the Napoleonic period, for a was a french feed up with it but dam your video made it so awesome! Thus, Bravo and thank you for the quality of your work !!!)

Patrick wilcher

Amazing! Most unreal content you have produced yet! Cant wait for the defense of France! Hope you cam do s video on napoleons exile return to power 🙏🙏🙏.Where do you get the music from for your videos?!

Damien Urfin

There is actually 2 great campaigns to come :)

Damien Urfin

Great work ! Its a shame there isnt detailed videos like that in French, we love our History but lot of us feel shame to tell it ( Napoleonic era especially ) if ever you need some translations for subtitiles or audio french, i would be honored to give a help. ( i rode many books about napoleonic Battles from serious recent Historians, including Leipzig from bruno Colson, your stuff is great )

Sasha

Bravo!

Stuart Carver

Ah thanks should have leaned from one napoleons own tactics, concentration of forces.

kokoo

Thx. So glad to make a tiniest contribution to a piece of true art.

Sean Fitzgerald

"Meh," said no one ever when watching Epic History.

Line_of_Blood

At 2:15, would it be possible to have the total number of soldiers from each respective nation. Also at 5:37, when Napoleon wanted to move Marshal Marmont VI Corps, General Souham's III Corps, and Marshal Macdonald XI Corps, do you know how many men in each respective Corps? Would that be noteworthy to put in the video. Because I assume probably around 10,000 men each, and if Napoleon was able to have the 3 extra corps, do you think his counterattack would have been successful?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Patrick! All the music in the video is from Filmstro, apart from end credits which is by Kevin Macleod (doing Beethoven!)

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Raymond. I try to be careful about not overloading the viewer with info, so I chose not to put this extra info on-screen. But in terms of the relative contributions: I calculated the percentages as Rus 42; Aus 32; Prus 21; Sweden 5, of a total of 360,000 troops (but not all historians will agree on these numbers - there are many ways to count these numbers).

EpicHistoryTV

And yes, 10,000 is a good average number for a French corps, but at Leipzig, everything was on a monstrous size - many corps were the size of small armies. The numbers from Osprey's Leipzig are: VI Corps: 16,000; III Corps: 14,000; XI Corps 20,000. Macdonald was in the thick of the fighting in the south, but if Marmont and all of Souham's corps (not half) was able to join the attack, then the outcome might well have been different. The problem was that Napoleon did not have good information about how close the Coalition armies were, and was hoping for the best.. Gambling, in effect.

Chirag

Toby, this is not simply a video, but a work of art! I tip my hat to you sir!

MJ fox

Great use of metal music at the end there, a really nice touch! Also you get moment with the uniforms of the soldiers from all the nations was cool, interesting to see the different uniforms

EpicHistoryTV

Glad you liked it Marco, and that was only a tiny sample of the uniforms at Leipzig! Every colour of the rainbow.

Sergio Mercogliano

Thank you for making such a detailed and crafted video.

Brian Lang

Great job! I really enjoy your work. I’m curious what software you use and also where you find your music. Is it stock music? I’m a musician and I also dabble a little in composing.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Brian! All the music (apart from credit music, which is Kevin Macleod) is from Filmstro. Not quite stock music, but a music service for film-makers, which allows me to tailor the track to the action on-screen.

Sean Leavey

I'm running out of superlatives to use each video you make! The information density of your videos is so refreshing compared to most other stuff on YouTube. As usual, what an incredible job. I'm going to double my subscription.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Sean, that's extremely generous. Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, this is why they take a little longer to make, hundreds of pages of reading and research gets crammed into each video!

Nibor9

Great work! Can we have the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 on the next poll? It would be good to see a commentary and illustration of the manoeuvres of Napoleon III and his defeat at Sedan.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Robin! We'll have an open thread for everyone to make suggestions, then I will use that to create a shortlist for the vote.. so make sure to get it down!

László Máté

Thank you very much for your great work! I cant explain how much i enjoy these videos :) Can I ask that will you cover the fight for France next then go on next topic? Sorry if you have mentioned it already and for my english. Until then im watching the video again. Thanks!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you László! Yes the 1814 French campaign is next..
