A mini-update to show off my ever-expanding collection of Napoleonic books. 'Napoleon's Marshals' is the newest addition, and is the most comprehensive account in English of the 26 'big hats' (as the Marshals were nicknamed by young officers), so will serve me well for the upcoming videos. I have also recruited Lieut Col Rémy Porte to serve as historical consultant, and keep an eye on my English bias! He is a former French Army officer, and military historian with the Service historique de la Défense. More updates and news soon..

Can you please post a bibliography? Love your work

That looks like an awesome book to read, and I cannot wait to watch your upcoming video about Napoleon's Marshals, and it'll be even more interesting to hear things from the French regarding them.

Stuart Carver

Hard question but if you could only recommend one of those books which would it be? Will you be consulting with anyone for ranking his enemies?

EpicHistoryTV

Depends what you're after. Esdaile's 'Napoleon's Wars' is a very good and grown-up overview. Andrew Roberts' biography is very readable, but far too uncritical of Napoleon in my opinion. Read together, they are a very good combo! I highly recommend Paul Britten Austin's account of 1812 too, packed with eyewitness accounts.

This is going to be most best episode yet in your Napoleon series! I can’t believe it’s really happening!

EpicHistoryTV

Only just saw the second half of your question - the answer is yes, the French historian mentioned in the post. But the final decision and person to blame will be me!

Stuart Carver

I’ve read Andrew Roberts one so the other one it shall be. You can tell he has a slight reverence for him just like in his Churchill book. Haha cool no pressure then 😉

Marcus Cribb

A absolutely GREAT selection. I always say you can't go wrong with Charles Esdaile for the Peninsular War & Rory Muir on Wellington. Both are absolute gentlemen too.

EpicHistoryTV

Yes, usually thought of as the gold standard in English. A bit too detailed for my needs, and annoyingly out of print, so very expensive. I've used sections for the series when there isn't more recent coverage, e.g. the Smolensk Manoeuvre.

Marcus Cribb

I've just upgraded my Patreon to Patreon of the Arts... Does this allow a extra vote for a certain video?? 😉

EpicHistoryTV

I am delighted and very grateful for the extra support Marcus, but this is not Napoleonic France - there can be no tampering with the electoral process!

Marcus Cribb

Well... Now I know I cannot be made a Prince or Mashal, maybe the King of some far off nation? No... Ah Patreon doesn't really hand out titles like the Tyrant did... Keep up the good work!

Gordian III

"like the Tyrant did" I hope you feel ashamed that you just referred to Napoleon as a tyrant ! Shame on you and disgrace yourself !

Marcus Cribb

I really do not. Monster is too personal. He was a military dictator, who rigged plebiscites, removed many women's rights, reintroduced slavery and encouraged his army to use murder and pillaging (and worse) as a weapon in nations he invaded. Tyrant is polite for such a figure. The 60,000 men of both sides who died 205 years tomorrow, have Napoleon's ego to blame for their lives being cut short.

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Really? I was able to get it on Amazon for about £34. Considering the books size and reputation I thought that was a rather modest price. There's an alternative in the form of a 6-volume series by Theodore Dodge, available for a more modest price.

EpicHistoryTV

I think you found a good deal. Cheapest I currently see is £74. Fortunately there is now an e-book.

Gordian III

Disgrace ! SO many things wrong with your statement !

Marcus Cribb

Not wrong, factually accurate, but you disagree with them. That's fine men are still drawn to Napoleon's power, days like yesterday highlight his legacy. The tragic suffering & death of many.

Németh Márton

Anyone knows a great audio book about this topic? For exampla in audible?

OGRE Baker

@ Marcus Cribb so you denounce the Emperor and yet you do not take the totality of the man and the many contributions he has made to Western society to this day. I find it disturbing when people look upon an individual/society/country with the “clear” scope of 21st century morality. That Sir is why we are in the state of affairs rampant in the West. We denounce our history, so we cannot learn from it and will be doomed to repeat it in far worse transgressions. Just my opinion and I wish you well in your endeavors!

OGRE Baker

I might have to show a picture of my Napoleonic library for which I am very proud of!
