A few little sneak peeks at the next video - all 26 Marshals neatly lined up, plus 12 generals who get a special mention in the introduction - examples of men who didn't  make it to Marshal during Napoleon's reign. Incredibly, more than 2,000 generals served in the French armies in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Obviously most were French, but there were also Swiss, Dutch, German, Italian, and Polish generals and even two Americans, one Greek and one Venezuelan!

I've found the biographies of the Marshals so interesting that this is now going to be a much longer 'countdown' video than originally envisaged - possibly three videos in all. More updates soon, but I hope to have the first episode finished in 2-3 weeks.

I wish you all a very happy weekend, and thank you for your support!

Marshal Lannes Is my Favourite of them all followed closely by Davout

This is going to be awesome! Looking forward to another epic presentation 🙂

Murat looks like a rockstar from a 80s hair band

General LaSalle has a respectable mustache

Patrik Lundstedt

Brilliant! Lannes all the way. Davout of course is a no-brainer.

Personally I'd rank Ney, Murat, Soult and Macdonald top of the list.

Eric Sorkin

Keep up the incredible work. Thanks Toby!!

Oh hell yeah! Last place has to be Brune. I remember reading somewhere that Napoleon liked him because he was tall and lanky, but he wasn't a very good general and ending up getting torn apart by a mob.

The best part about these videos is that I will finally be able to hear how the names of all these Marshals are supposed to be pronounced lol.

Rodger Murphy

I hope Ney my freaking hero is first!

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Look forward to it Toby. Did you say you were going to do a similar treatment on their opponents?

I loved the minor details mentioned in passing in the 'Napoleonic Wars' documentary series—things like Murat being known as the flamboyant one (Austerlitz episode); Bernadotte almost being court-martialed (Jena episode); Berthier's limited prowess on the field [because he was essentially just a staff officer] (Aspern episode); Bernadotte's great concern for his Saxon corps at Wagram; Junot's failure at Valuntino (Invasion episode); and Gerard taking over after Perrin got sacked (Endgame).

Andrew Obejero

I was hoping for a look into the lives of the marshals this whole time, so thanks for making this video!

Murat had that Glam Rock 1970's rockstar hair...He was way ahead of his time

Now the Marshals project has got much larger, I'm actually going to park the 'Napoleon's Enemies' video for a bit, and follow this with the Vitoria campaign.

Eli Khanam

He was a bit of an underdog with his peers.

Gordian III
