Dear Patrons,

I'm very pleased to share with you the first (ad-free) instalment of the Napoleon's Marshals, er.. series? Well, as you will see, what was supposed to be a quick video ranking all 26 Marshals has become something a bit bigger: mini-biographies of every Marshal, with what I hope you'll think are some interesting details along the way.

In this episode, for example, you'll find out what's inscribed on every French Marshal's baton; which Marshal was friends with the great Revolutionary leader Georges Danton, and which Marshal's greatest victory was assisted by a hot air balloon!

Expert advice for this video was provided by retired Lieutenant Colonel Rémy Porte, former chief historian of the French Army. Rémy has been writing a military history blog (en Francais) for the last 9 years, which you can read here: http://guerres-et-conflits.over-blog.com/

This video will be out on YouTube next Thursday,  but I will post a link here as soon as it's ready for those who prefer YT to Vimeo.

Lastly - you are the first people anywhere to see this video, and in the past you've been very helpful in spotting typos and other mistakes. This time, the first person to spot a typo (if there are any?) will get to claim any one item from the EHTV merch shop for free, as a thank you. (My rulings are final & absolute on who was first and what counts as a typo!)

Thank you all again for your amazing support, I hope you enjoy this video and let me know what you think!

Luca Schneider

26 minutes of pure pleasure brilliant :D

Simon Hagsten of Sweden

Great video but you should've moved on to your next major historical event like WW2, Thirty years war or the wars of King Pyrrhus the Great.

Gordian III

pyrrhus the great would be interesting

Wenwei Jiang

What a start to the series! Can't wait to see the next videos. A bit surprising that Bernadotte is yet to be mentioned 😆

Gordian III

Man, you go into so many details and little (interesting) facts, like for example, i never knew that Jourdan was Joseph's military advisor in Spain and that none of the Marshals took him at face value, and his feud with the "King of Andalucia". I always find these sorts of (little) details amazing. Great video, great choice of music. Looking forward to the next one's : )

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Another great video Toby! It's interesting to see the number of Seven Years War veterans among this group.

Evan Lloyd

This has certainly brightened my day and im glad to see youre taking your time to work through the Marshals methodically. I do think that not placing Bernadotte at the bottom of the list is a little controversial but I look forward to the next episodes regardless!

Grimace

Fantastic video, it's good to learn about the lesser known marshalls.

Marcos

Almost 30 min?! I'm drooling :)

Tyler P

wonderful! can't wait for part 2!

Stephen Wilson

Excellent video! Some people may see the take on Grouchy as a hot take. Absolutely pumped for the rest of this series, no matter how many parts it takes.

Sam Waymire

Hi Toby! Great video as always. I noticed when talking about Marshal Poniatowski it says that the Battle of Jena was November 14, 1806 when it was a month prior.

Gavin Gates

I'm guessing top 5 will be Davout, Lannes, Ney, Masséna, and Soult(?) I just hope Davout is #1!

Jerry Johnston

"Sorry because of privacy settings, this video cannot be played here". Does this on every browser.

ms372

That is a great video.. There's one editing mistake I've noticed in the video however.. particularly at 11:12.. The previous marshall to Kellerman was marshall Serrurier and not marshall Brune

ms372

It won't be long before we move on to the next .. Great choice of video in my opinion!

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Jerry, not sure why this is happening, seems to be working ok for most. I'll message you a link, hopefully that will work.

EpicHistoryTV

This is an eagle-eyed spot, thank you Mustafa, I will fix it! Sam just beat you to the free merch prize this time..

Németh Márton

Same problem for me. The video has private settings.

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Németh, I'll message you a link, see if that works.

Darko

Great video! Can't believe these so interesting characters are bottom of the list

Stuart Carver

Great video as always If this is in 3 parts will napoleons enemies follow the same format? And d’you reckon you’re still on course for ww2 by the end of the year like you were hoping?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart! Actually I'm going to park the Napoleon's Enemies idea for the moment, now that the Marshals has become a much bigger project. So after the Marshals, Battle of Vitoria. I fear that WW2 before Christmas is looking a bit hopeful...

Chirag

Magnificent work as usual! Such depth in each Marshall's career. For Moncey, at 18:34 you note "repatriation of Napoleon's ashes"; I'm assuming that you're translating 'Retour des cendres' literally as I don't believe that Napoleon's body was ever cremated.

Ali Ghoraba

Fascinating and charismatic as always you guys make it hard for me to enjoy other documentaries :)

EpicHistoryTV

Good point Chirag, I was translating the French phrase but it may well cause viewers to assume he was cremated. I'll see if this can be fixed. Thanks.

Kevin Xu

Is it just me or does Serrurier sound like a real life Stannis? Stern and rigid type and all

Eli Khanam

I guess this will take 3 or 4 videos to complete, so how long between each?

EpicHistoryTV

At least a month or two. I'm also working on the castles video and a Salamis video.

Gordian III

Massena would be there if he had not been in Spain. Remember, he was Recalled in Disgrace.

Flo

For those who have "privacy setting issue" : Maybe you use private nav, privacy extensionsor Brave browser, Vimeo cannot recognize the origin of the user so you are blocked. Use Firefox of Chrome, regular way and you'll see it. :)

Louis Sarkozy

Amazing video, as always. I did find a typo, at minute 18:22. Marshal Ney is spelled "Marshsal" with an extra S.

Seb

To be fair to Bernadotte, although he made bad mistakes at Jena-Auerstadt and Wagram, those were victories for napoleon and didn’t have as much of an effect as for e.g. Grouchys mistake during Waterloo. Additionally Bernadotte performed well during the battle of Austerlitz and managed to score some minor victories fighting the Russians and Prussians independently after Jena-Auerstadt.

Bret

I hope Murat is in the top 5 marshels.he

Santiago Visci

Obviusly a Warm up for what is coming... brilliant anyway. I finally decide to support this cannel thru Patreon!

Gavin Gates

Yes but Davout was also disgraced for his rearguard action in russia. I think masséna's overall career is worthy of being top 5. Who do you think should be top 5?

John-Mark Mamalakis

Brilliantly done, a true work of art and memorial to Napoleon's Marshals.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Louis, will get this one fixed, and many thanks for your extremely generous support!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Florian. I have double-checked all the Vimeo settings and they are correct, so I think the issue must be a problem with the user's own privacy settings?

Wenwei Jiang

Any thoughts on Berthier potentially being among the top 5?

A Terrell

Adds amazing depth to this outstanding Napoleonic series, Thank-you Epic History TV.

Flo

Yes, i was tallking about the users ! Your video settings are fine. It's just when people visit in private mode, anti-tracker addons, etc. :)

jean philippe reille

I am sad that you didn't talk about reille on the most honorable general, would have been a fair spot

EpicHistoryTV

Yes of course, there are many generals who could easily be included in our list, Reille certainly, but I had to make tough and personal choices. He is a relation, by any chance?!
