Here it is, exclusive ad-free early access to the next installment of Napoleon's Marshals. This 30 minute episode covers four more heavyweights of the French army, including one whose relatively low ranking may raise a few eyebrows... he's a bit of a legend, but I won't spoil the surprise. (Watch video before looking at comments to avoid spoilers!)

Our rankings seem to have been uncontroversial so far, but I suspect that may end here! In any event, I hope you enjoy the episode and look forward to your feedback.

Merch for Typos™ is in operation - the first person to let me know about a typo or other mistake (not including Part Two in the intro!) will be rewarded with one item of your choice from the merch shop.

Thank you again for your invaluable support. I'll be here to answer any comments or questions about the episode, and I'll post a YouTube link as soon as it's available.

Edit: HERE is the link to the YouTube video. (There's also a special offer in this one for the first 100 people clinking on a link to Blinkist, so you'll get a headstart if you're interested!)

Stephen Wilson

It still says Part Two at the beginning.

Sean Leavey

Hah, you beat me to it by 1 minute, damnit!

EpicHistoryTV

Lol! Ok, well that was the fastest typo spot that will hopefully ever happen! You win the prize! I will message you tomorrow regarding details.

EpicHistoryTV

I'm going to add another prize for the next typo.. that was too easy!

Joseph Dell

Toby, had a rough week. This notification was the best news I've had this week! Really looking forward to it.

EpicHistoryTV

Sorry to hear you've had a bad one Joseph, hope you enjoy some Napoleonic escapism...

Sean Leavey

Shouldn't "Republicains" be "Républicains" on Saint-Cyr's card at 02:19? (Scraping the barrel here...)

Sakuraba216

This is the highlight of my week baby! Hey Epic History, have you seen all of the reaction videos on YouTube to the Napoleon series? There are so many of them, it’s like a phenomenon now. It’s amazing to see everyone’s reaction in learning how Napoleon’s story plays out for the very first time. These videos bring the Napoleonic age to life unlike anything else.

EpicHistoryTV

Haha, will check this one tomorrow, gotta sleep now..

Sean Leavey

Pretty unimportant in typo terms, especially compared to the first ;-) Top work as always! Love this stuff so much!

Wenwei Jiang

That opening music at the surprise reveal of the "relatively low ranking" - perfection!!

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

Toby! Another masterpiece! You know, after we talked about Ney I figured Murat was the mystery man! He was a typical cavalry guy, I would know, I was one, he was brash and brave to the point of stupidity. Which fine for leading charges, but for the finer points of generalship he was often left wanting. He would often let his emotions get the best of him, a trait shared by his Gascon brothers Lannes, and fellow King, Bernadotte. It is a pity however, because he was a decent King, and helped spark the Italian reunification process. But as a marshal? Decidedly uneven. Thank you again for another brilliant episode!

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

And, as another thought, if there was a traitor, Murat would most fit the bill. Bernadotte was the ruler of Sweden and had to put Sweden first. Marmont was clear-headed enough to see the war was lost and decided to end the fighting to spare lives. But Murat? I would say he was out to save his, and more importantly, his wife's, crown. For purely personal reasons. This sort of greediness was earlier reflected in his attempts to expand Cleves and Berg knowing full well his actions might start a war with Prussia. That he abandoned the Army in Russia is another example. I think you could have ranked him much, much lower. Leaving the men to their fate in Russia is 10x worse than any mistake the other Marshals committed. He thrice screwed Napoleon, in Russia, in Germany and then during the Hundred Days when his aggression made it appear to the Austrians that Napoleon was orchestrating a grand attack, rendering his protestations of wanting peace hollow. If it weren't for his brilliance, insane courage and legend, I think he might have been considered amongst the very worst.

Michael Barrett

There’s still hope for Ney getting the number one spot. Gotta keep the faith.

Rick Reactions

I was not terribly suprised at the ranking of Murat. Thinking of it logically it does makes sense. He was pretty bad when left with independent command and he was by no means a good strategist. A brave and inspirational leader who had an instinctual grasp of tactics but completely oblivious to finer points of generalship.

Rick Reactions

I always found it hilarious that Murat was made Grand Admiral when he had never commanded a ship and knew nothing of naval warfare. He was undoubtely the greatest admiral to fight on land at the very least lol.

Walter C

Its truly "Epic" history. The music, the content, the images, and the way its layed out has me on the edge of my seat the entire time. 32 minutes flew by and I was mad it was over!! haha I will rewatch it again at-least one more time as usual.

Rafael Consentino

I think I spotted a typo. At the 23:50 mark, the name of the Grand Duchy of Berg has "Cleves" spelled with three e's (Cleeeves). Isn't it supposed to be just one e? Anyway, outstanding work like always, Toby.

Wenwei Jiang

At 1:55, "Egalité" should be "Égalité" :)

Stuart Carver

The opening line says part 2 instead of 3. Also After talking about the battle of aboukir you then say the next year Murat supported napoleons coup when both events took place in the same year 21.18. Still a fantastic video obviously Murat is certainly a surprising choice . we’re getting closer to the big guns 😉

Maggie Scott

The two undisputed masters of the Gascon art of the con game on the bridge, with the wily Oudinot and his grenadiers scuttling beneath, cutting fuses as they went. Murat tried the same ruse with Bagration after Hollabrunn, and has his posterior handed to him. Lannes was too busy trying out Russian vodka to be bothered.

Maggie Scott

And in Spain, it's Gerona, not Girona.

Rodger Murphy

Great work Toby...to you and your staff! I love these videos. Makes my day everytime a new one is posted

vren55

... Saint-cyr honestly might have dodged a bullet. Like damnit he's a HUGE what if, but his refusal to get into politics really saved his life and kept him out of trouble.

vren55

Also, I wonder what Oudinot's nickname was. Could it have been "The Immortal One?"

Stuart Carver

Also oudinot wasn’t the longest lived marshal as Kellermann dies at 85 and Moncey at 87

Leone

I was surprised at Murat's rank! But now it makes me even more curious about the remaining 9, especially Suchet and Soult. As long as the Iron Marshal and Gascon Lannes smash the final ranks, all's good eh? Hahahaha. Love the video, can't wait for the next part!

Frankie Carioca

It’s amazing hearing the things these marshals did, good work can’t wait for the next part

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Maggie, I'm going to let this one stand, both Gerona and Girona are regularly used in English (Google Maps has gone with Girona, for example).

EpicHistoryTV

Good spot, but I understand it's ok to leave accents off capital letters in French.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Rodger! By staff, I presume you mean Charles, my narrator! Otherwise it's all me at my computer!

EpicHistoryTV

He's a very interesting character, a man of very firm principles, when many around him were dominated by ambition and vanity.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart! Good spots, I'll get these fixed.

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Sean, yes I'm going to count this one and get it fixed! (It's a mistake I copied from Chandler's 'Napoleon's Marshals). So you win the second typo prize! I'll message you..

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Peter! Yes I've seen a few of the reaction videos, great to know people reacting with such passion to history!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Yes Murat's such an extreme mix of heroism and vanity, a sort of Achilles of the Romantic age. My advisor Rémy Porte actually wanted him at 12, I initially had him at 6 or 7, so we compromised on 10. It was interesting that Rémy's perspective, as a retired colonel of the French army, was that Murat's desertion and treason in 1813 outweighed almost all his prior achievements. Murat would get a lot of the top prizes - most remarkable life, best story, arguably the bravest, certainly the best dressed, etc, but definitely not the best Marshal!

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed. You'll see when we get to the final episodes that the highest ranking Marshals are mostly those who were capable of independent command. When Murat was given command of the army he almost immediately went AWOL!

Sean Leavey

What happens when you've already had Charles narrate something factually inaccurate? Do you have some free "fixes" included in the contract?

EpicHistoryTV

Depends how big the fix is! In this case I edited the audio to say 'Oudinot was one of the longest-lived...'!

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

I have to agree with COL Remy. His departure from the GA came at a critical juncture during the retreat. Inexcusable. But yeah, he would be in the running for those prizes. Though our friend Ney would dispute The Bravest, Bernadotte might be the leading contender for best story, but no one dressed better than Murat! His diamond hat pin cost 60,000 Francs! That was fives times the annual revenue of Ponte Corvo!

Eiko Streitz

That last image of Murat is just Wow 🥰

Wenwei Jiang

Ah I see, that's good to know, thanks!

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

It's interesting to see how many of them did not necessarily approve of Napoleon's power or how he got it.

Lewis C

"A decent fellow, but not very bright" LOL

Elisabeth Chan

Amazing video! Now I am making bets on which marshals showing on the next video and my bets are MacDonald, Ney (he is my favourite marshal🥺), Soult and Bessières. Looking forward to the next part!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, very glad you enjoyed it! No spoilers but there may be some clues coming soon..

Eiko Streitz

Exactly, a possible candidate for my living room 💂‍♂️

Martin Andersson

Top quality as allways! I´m never disappointed whenever a new video drops from Toby

AnthonyBlessed

Ah, so Murat it was. I wasn't expecting Murat, I thought he'd be higher on the list while I was pondering what the other Marshal would be. But I see what you did there with the picture of that battle on the Rhine and how Victor was exchanged for then-general Blucher. Quality content as always. Especially enjoy the attention to detail with how you re-record the opening intro with different tempos, and adjust the music to keep it fresh. Very tasteful! Keep up the good work Toby and Charles!

Allen La

I love these docu-videos, really gives us a deep, detailed look at these prominent marshals' lives. Cannot wait for more!

Sean Fitzgerald

FYI - Youtube link still says "Part Two" at the beginning.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Sean. I think I need to get my eyes tested..

Sophie Selkie

What's that song used in the Murat section?

EpicHistoryTV

There's quite a few in there, but if you mean at the start it's a theme from Filmstro called Phoenix.

Lewis C

The bloody awesome egypt part is "viking". my fav one.
