Dear Patrons,

I am pleased to present 'Wellington's Triumph: Vitoria 1813' ad-free early access!

I hope you enjoy the video, and look forward to your feedback. Thank you to HistoryMarche for the lavish battlefield map.

Merch for typos is in effect, usual rules apply. This is our last rendezvous with Napoleon for a while. It's been quite a trip,  and there will be the chance to vote for more Napoleon content in future. But the next focus is going to be Salamis, HMS Victory (hmm sort of Napoleonic!), and preparing two polls for you to vote on. We'll also have the Apollo Program Part 3 later this month. More updates next week.

Thank you again for all your support!

Wellington, Blücher, Kutuzov, without a doubt the most painful of thorns in Napoleons side besides Nelson, Imagine had Kutuzov not fallen from pneumonia & had lent His skill & cautiousness at Waterloo,. Would have been something else truly. This documentary was fantastic thank You! 💚

Bart Stevens

Makes my day! Unfortunat it will be a while till the next Nap content but i understand why. Salamis and HMS Victory (Nap in disguise indeed xD ) wil be super interesting in the meantime :D

Vikram Chochinov

Oh damn, I didn't realize how much I missed that intro music. I'll be sad to see this period wrap up but I can't wait to see what you do next.

Rick Reactions

Someone of Marshal Soult's or Suchet's caliber really needed to be at Vitoria. The basic tactical mistakes made by Joseph's forces were just a frustrating experience to witness. One can only wonder what difference a better French commander could have made even though the wider war may have been a failure.

Maciej

Ah, another great Napoleonic video. Thank you!

Stephen Wilson

Great video and a great end to the Peninsula series. The transition to Leipzig at the end is really good. Where does a Part 3 to the Apollo Series play into the future, or is it over at 2? (Hopefully not because I’d like to see how you handle Apollo 13)

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Yes, Apollo Program Part 3 (final part) will be out later this month!

Akylbek

Part of one of the great series wasn’t expecting you got me with surprised.

Joseph Dell

Love that you release these on a Friday Toby, always makes my weekend start off on the right foot!

Alexandre Evrard

Do you plan something else about Napoleon, Italy maybe ?

Rick Reactions

Another brilliant production between EpicHistoryTV and HistoryMarche. The battle map especially was more crisp and detailed than ever. The presentation and narration held up to its customary high standards. The quotes and research cited were informative and interesting as ever. While you may be leaving the Napoleonic era for other projects for the time being, I think most of us will wait eagerly for the inevitable day when Napoleon's Italian campaigns are covered. Though I am looking forward to seeing a naval battle being animated for once. The Battle of Salamis is the most important naval battle in ancient history alongside Actium in my opinion and deserves to be highlighted.

Ghostmoor

Great ending to the best series I have ever watched from an independent creator. That quote at the end from the Prince Regent to Wellington gave me chills. Incredible that this period had arguably the two greatest military minds in history, and that their only encounter was the one to finally end the bloodshed. Thank you for all your efforts, I look forward to what you do next.

Rick Reactions

Read the post. There will be a chance for more Napoleon in the future :)

Lewis C

I love that track so much too! :)

Lewis C

Loved this so much. Thanks! Those stats at the end were particularly fascinating and shocking.

Bence Fehér

Not sure if a typo but the casualties don't quite add up. Can't wait to see what's next in store for the channel!

John-Mark Mamalakis

This was an amazing piece of work!! Definitely one of my favorite channels to watch over and over again.

Eli Khanam

Another great video! This series was definitely the most detailed and interesting on the channel, and I hope the next major series continues that quality!

Teixeira da Silva

Wellington battle of Vitória was a pretty easy one. Jourdan must have been senil to put the troops the way he did. Wellington deserved a better adversary. Great video Toby. Loved the napolionic videos so far. Let's see what the future will bring us.

Philip Forinton

The long anticipated episode! For us at least. The people on youtube won't know what hit them.

Philip Forinton

Is there maybe a way to download the video? I have really bad internet, and I'd prefer to watch it without cuts.

Lazar Momcilovic

What a incompetence on the part of the French leaders. In the first 5-6 minutes of the video I think that I heard around 4-5 times narrator saying how the French generals assumed in advance what would happen, and every time it backfired. I mean... wow. As someone else said - Wellesley didn't get a good adversary. In the end he fought one (Marshal Soult), but by that time the war on the whole was more or less decided.

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

If this is your last video on this conflict for the time being Toby, you've gone out with a bang. From the beginning I've loved the objectivity with which you approach military history. Giving people all both sides credit where it's due, as well as calling out their blunders as they occur. I still find the Retreat from Moscow video the most addictive one to come back to. As a WW2 Eastern front buff I find the historical parallels unbelievable, specifically the way invaders have repeatedly underestimated the sheer logistical nightmare of waging war in the empty steppes of Russia, as well as the effects of the climate. I hope one day you'll consider tackling the Great Northern War 1700-25, which is where this cycle arguably began. Take care!

Christian Gundersen

Is Oporto a typo error, at 4:21 ? Or was the city really called that back in old days ? Great video !

luc

Superb ! the insertion in the rest of the series is top

Richard Fernandes

The French Generals incompetence for this Battle was a joke! By the way, great FINISH for this Napoleonic Saga! You Toby and Nove are for me The Best TWO Superb Combination of Producer and Narrator on Historic Videos! Keep up the great Job.

Gordian III

Thank you! It has been such a GREAT pleasure watching this for 2 years! A dream!

CJ Tabunda III

As always, great Napoleonic Wars video! You can now rest for awhile from Napoleon videos. But if you would ever return to Napoleon videos, might I suggest an episode covering in detail Soult's famous fighting retreat against Wellington, from Battle of the Pyrenees to the Battle of Toulouse? Or the naval actions of the Napoleonic Wars other than Trafalgar? Or perhaps, as suggested by many of my fellow subscribers, the battles of the French Revolutionary Wars, such as Valmy, Jemappes, Fleurus, Suvorov's Italian expedition, Novi, Zurich, Hohenlinden, and, most of all, Napoleon's early campaigns from Lodi to Egypt to Marengo? Just a friendly suggestion that you might consider. But, until then, take a well-deserved break from everything Napoleon and focus on other awesome historical topics.

Daniel Costa

Another excellent video, thank you! This series has been really great to watch.

Niall Higgins

Everything you do is an absolute masterpiece. I had zero interest in space and now I’m reading everything I can get my hands on. The Napoleonic saga is my favourite in history. You’re a genius sir.

AnthonyBlessed

Great work as usual Toby, and Charles, very entertaining, full of meticulously resesrched information, full of great detail. Also, thanks to HistoryMarche as well, his battle maps have been quite instrumental in many of the Napoleonic wars videos. Always gives a very clear picture as to what's going on. I would say the battle seems very anticlimatic, whereas it seemed from earlier descriptions that the battle was closer than what was described in the video. Yes, the French fought bravely, and did what they could to halt the allied advance. But they didn't have much of a chance at winning, much less halting Wellington's advance for any marginal amount of time. It seems like the fate of Spain was already decided at Salamanca, and Vitoria was simply postponing the inevitable. The French situation there was pretty much lost, and, as you expertly pointed out and alluded to, unless Napoleon secured a crushing victory in Germany, Spain was going to fall. Great work again Toby, and keep 'em coming. Happy to be a Patreon and continue to do so, your work continues to be very enjoyable and amazing. During school, they never really covered anything about the Napoleonic Wars, and having watched your videos, alongside some of my own research, I now have a much better understanding as to what went on, and the circumstances behind it, among other things. Also, keep up the little details in each video, those I find to be extremely important, and I enjoy listening to them. Cheers!

Wenwei Jiang

That selection of paintings at the end spanning the entire Peninsular War! Sooo epic!

Wenwei Jiang

100%, I wish the full soundtrack will be released in an album.

Resident Elect

Another quality documentary from Toby and the EHTV team! I loved the use of the Georgian-era satirical prints! They have always fascinated me since school and was introduced to works such as "A Volumptuary Under the Horrors of Digestion" by James Gillray, which quite rightly portrayed the Prince of Wales as a pampered, overfed, lazy slob! Would you ever consider making a short episode about these cartoons, the men who created them and just how significant they are as historical record? Some of the ones which feature Napoleon are hilarious! Thanks once again for all the hard work!

vren55

Of course Suchet is undefeated lol

Vendura

The Weasel Duke

Astra Solace

See Toby's Q&A. "Time being" is relative haha, Toby needs a little break from Napoleonic fatigue. Eventually he will be back, and he's open to other Napoleonic adventures left uncovered, like Napoleon's Italian & Egyptian campaigns, or even an update to Waterloo.

Astra Solace

Toby's still open for Napoleonic videos, no worries. Just that he needs a break from Napoleonic fatigue. for now. But the French Emperor would be back!

luc

He will make Italian campaign after a pause, but if he can make Marengo it's really top, include the political rise of Napoleon's power...

Patrick wilcher

These videos make me want to go take the kings schilling and serve under Ol Nosey. Great video great series, well done EHTV!

EpicHistoryTV

There's going to be a Napoleon mini-break, but it will be offered as an option in future votes. Italy 1796 will be one of the options.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Yes, two two great figures of military history, with a fitting showdown.

EpicHistoryTV

Good spot, I was curious if anyone would notice! I've copied them directly from Sir Charles Oman's history of the Peninsular War - his own figures don't quite add up, but they are based on the primary sources. I didn't feel qualified to 'tidy' them up, so reproduced them as I found them.

EpicHistoryTV

Sorry, but for various copyright and licensing issues, I can only make the videos available on streaming platforms.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Gavin, that's very nice to hear. I'd actually love to take on the WW2 Eastern Front at some stage, having worked for so many months on the series Soviet Storm.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Oporto was the old English name. To be more consistent I should probably have called it Porto - I used Zaragoza rather than Saragossa - but a minor inconsistency rather than a typo.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, very glad you've enjoyed the series! I know there's a lot of interest in the Pyrenees campaign, and it's certainly a very interesting episode, at the operational and tactical level. We'll have a vote at some stage on the next Napoleonic topic - this could be an option - although I have to say that I suspect Italy 1796 is going to be the winner!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Niall, that's great to hear. Epic History TV was very much intended to be a gateway drug into serious history!

CJ Tabunda III

Epic History TV Looking forward to all of your awesome historical contents, whatever time periods they are!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Anthony. Yes, I was struggling with that a little bit in the writing - Vitoria was a complete drubbing, and tricky to find the usual jeopardy / tension! It was a bad place to fight, and Joseph and Jourdan got everything wrong - not that they had many good options. Napoleon would not have allowed them to consolidate their position by a massive withdrawal, which was the best strategic option. Reminiscent of Hitler's refusal to allow retreats in France and Russia in WW2, until it was too late.

EpicHistoryTV

Glad you liked them, a lot of thought went into getting the right balance!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Though I hope I haven't overly glamourised the wars! The ratio of dead British soldiers from disease was no better than the French...

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the old cartoons as much as I do. One of my history professors at Edinburgh University was in fact one of the great experts on the work of Gillray and Cruikshank. It would be an interesting video to make, but unfortunately I think it's rather a niche interest - I don't think it would get too many views! If you follow the channel on any of the usual various social media platforms, you'll see I post about them every now and then.

Arben Kikaj

Superb video and some excellent closing remarks. Its such a pleasure watching this series!

Marcus Cribb

More like "Great" who else can say they never lost a pitched battle?

Marcus Cribb

Another excellent Peninsula War video, from what I think is one of the absolute best channels. Happy to support, think many of us hope this isn't the end of the Peninsula War journey with Epic History TV.

Michael Craig

That was as brilliant and informative as I was expecting! To my mind, Wellington seems like of history’s most competent generals and it’s quite fascinating that him and Napoleon never met until the very end for a final showdown. It almost seemed destined. Especially because the one time Napoleon ever went to Spain was the only couple months that Wellington wasn’t there! Don’t know if it’s something you’d ever consider but I’d love an updated, more in-depth, Hundred Days Campaign (ft Waterloo) in the future. But for now I eagerly await your next (mostly) non-Napoleonic adventures!

Vendura

The did weasel his way to victory , good thing he was never sent to USA during the war of 1812 or he would have found the shame fate as the others Generals .

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Marcus, glad you enjoyed it. Plenty of scope to revisit the Peninsula, not least the Pyrenees campaign of course ;)

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Michael! There will be a few options in the next Napoleon poll, but in the immortal words of Monty Python, now for something completely different..

EpicHistoryTV

Hmm, not sure I agree with the characterisation of Wellington! By any objective assessment, he was an incredibly organised, methodical and effective commander. As for the War of 1812, I believe he had some pretty strong opinions on the campaign, and was pretty scathing of the strategic approach.

AnthonyBlessed

@Epic History TV You're quite welcome sir. It was in a time where it only hastened their demise in Spain by leaving themselves even more overstretched. Even if they found a sound defense on the Ebro River, and withdrew earlier, and if Napoleon had kept the reinforcements necessary in Spain in order to keep Wellington at bay, it still would have came down to him winning at Leipzig, and finding a way to get reinforcements to Spain to wear down Wellington, and finding the initiative again, perhaps after soundly defeating Wellington. Postponing the inevitable I suppose. But, it's still good to have a good understanding of the battle, and it's place in Napoleon's eventual defeat. I find it somewhat ironic that the Brirish found great ways to strengthen their position in Spain, and the French just totally wrote it off. Way to set themselves up for failure there. You still managed to find some sort of jeopardy, tension, and excitement! Good on you.

Patrick wilcher

"An orgy of plunder" greatest line of all EHTV videos!

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

That would be great. By the way, there was a show on the Yesterday channel earlier this week and the week before about the WW2 Western Front. Was it your name on the credits? Even Charles was the narrator.

Hisham Yousif

Great video, excellent content, and the simple aesthetic of the maps and scrolls remains as classy as ever. Wonderful work Toby, I'm a proud supporter. I'm visiting France this summer in part inspired by your work. Thanks, wishing you more success.

Stuart Carver

That raises the question of why he wasn’t sent to America after Napoleons first exile after all many of his veterans were?

Vendura

Like the Prussians Bailing him out during Waterloo and taking all the glory to himself ?

Stuart Carver

As brilliant as ever. What would you say was the strategic hammer blow that forces the French out of Spain as the battle seems more like a poorly coordinated rearguard action? Was the build up of troops prior to the offensive enough to make the retreat inevitable or Wellington flanking manoeuvres prior to the battle? Also what was Graham doing? Failing to cut off the retreat, the falling out at Barrosa and he didn’t accomplish much in the Netherlands in 1814. Was he perhaps a little incompetent? 18.12 can you really say Suchet was undefeated??? Surely you can’t given Castalla? Plus what on earth was Clauzel doing after the battle doing a big loop to Zaragoza and back? Hope the vote comes soon I’m thinking something like your Viking video but using Greek mythology instead of Viking sagas?

韵霖 王

Did Marshal Jourdan get a new baton after he lost his first one?

Adam J. Danberg

Great video. Please do the 13th of Vendemaire, 1796, Egypt, Marengo, Trafalgar a redue of the houndred days and Eugenes camapigns in Italy. Also do an episode on the grand marshals of the palace. You are the best.

David Chadraba

Amazing work yet again! Plus you keep getting better every video. I hope one day you will make a video on Napoleon´s Italian or Egyptian campaign. Keep up the good work.

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

Another amazing entry! Hot damn! Wellington was easily the best Allied general. After doing a lot of research on Charles, Blucher, it is obvious how Wellington knew how to beat the French. And it helps he had a lot less interference from London than the others had from their sovereigns. I would have loved to see Wellington take on Davout. Would have been something.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart. That's a lot of questions! Graham had quite ambiguous orders from Wellington - he was to cut the road, but also to keep pace with the advance on his right (so Dalhousie's late arrival also caused Graham to slow his advance), and ALSO to make sure he didn't do so much that he drew the entire weight of the French army against him. Quite a difficult balancing act. Suchet - he might have a lost a few battles (small ones) but on the broader, strategic level I'd say he was undefeated. Clauzel's retreat via Zaragoza was definitely the long way round, but he got his troops safely back to France, and rejoined the army.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Seb, very glad you enjoyed. Yes, not having the Prince Regent looking over his shoulder at every moment, which was effectively the equivalent experience of every Russian, Austrian, and Prussian commander, must have been quite a relief!

Stuart Carver

Yes sorry that’s just me. Hmm ok that’s fair though I’m sure Picton wouldn’t have held back during the retreat. Yes though it’s not always easy to know when someone says that if they’re talking about tactical defeats or strategic ones, definitions are always quibbled about. Oh that was simply a retreat I thought he might have had something to do in Zaragoza, that’s quite the March for him then.

Stuart Carver

Also congrats on 1 million subs you really deserve that and more.

Marcus Cribb

The Pyrenees? Now who mentioned that? Wow, that'd be such a good idea now you've said it! ;) (Joking aside, it'd be fantastic, but keep up the brilliant work anyway)

Sean Leavey

Epic end to the series! That music is something else - what a choice. Fantastic work as always Toby! And no typos? Amazing! :-P I thought I would sit back and relax for this one, figuring after 4 days someone surely found some already, but apparently not!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Sean! Yes it might be one of my few typo-free efforts!
