Dear Patrons,

YOUTUBE LINK: https://youtu.be/QOBH7hMh2Xs

I am very pleased to present the world premiere of 'Belisarius Part 1: The Emperor's Sword', ad-free and exclusive for Patreon supporters. This episode features some great artwork from Milek (you may remember his work from 5 Great Viking Deaths) as well as Total War gameplay footage from Legendarian. Plus a composite, reflex bow that took me far too long to animate, given that it's on screen for 6 seconds..

It has been a great pleasure to research, write and produce this episode - the scope of the story, the characters, the world-shaking events - it's so dramatic you'd swear it was a TV script if Procopius hadn't written it down 1500 years ago. I very much hope you enjoy the result, and look forward to your feedback.

Typos for Merch™ is in effect - the first to spot one gets any item of their choice from the merch store.

Thanks again for your amazing support, I hope you enjoy the video!

Toby

Video doesn't seem to be working for me

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Seb! I don't know, Khosrow seems pretty impressive!

Kristian Hagberg

It works now! 😁 Looking forward to watch it 😄

BenDrums24

Unexpected, but exactly what I can't wait to watch.

Mathew Bub

Is the sound of the voice audio at 20:38 intentional? To my ear the "for now" sounds like it could be an audio glitch.

Richard Fernandes

Super Video Work as ALWAYS!!! Keep it up! I am looking forward for part 2.

Resident Elect

Absolutely fantastic! I did have to chuckle at the part about Andreas the wrestling instructor... He dispatches two Persian troops during one on one combat and the next thing we know the Persians have called up thousands of reinforcements! There must have been a collective "gulp" from the Persian lines after Andreas had got finished with his foes! Bravo Toby, another masterpiece!

Rick Reactions

The Age of Justinian truly was extraordinary. Not only militarily, but also in terms of developments in administration and theology. More people need to learn about this perhaps somewhat forgotten period of Roman history! Another fantastic video, as always. Keep up the good work!

Rodger Murphy

Fantastic work as always! I wait with anticipation for the next episode

EpicHistoryTV

There is an edit there, but you're not supposed to notice it! Thanks for pointing it out, I'll take another look.

Dan Jaggers

That was a fantastic video, a greay way to ease us into the situation at that time, it's interesting how Belisarius has scored a great victory but also a defeat in a short time period, i'm sure most people might be thrown off by how a so called great general can have defeats to his name, but i'm sure as we watch more of this series, we'll gradually start to see why he is considered "The Last of the Romans".

Luca Schneider

May I ask the name of the song in the beginning of the video? :)

EpicHistoryTV

It is called Beneath the Surface, by Dan Phillipson

Luca Schneider

Thank you very much. Just finished the video and it was beyond amazing!

luc

Amazing introduction ! It's likes a serie with suspens at the end ! Soon the next !!!

Josh perry

The quality of your videos is world class, you all put in a tonne of effort and it really shows. Keep it up, I cant wait for the second part!

Eli Khanam

My favourite part was the Wilhelm Scream!

Thibaut Andrey

You guys Always make the best YouTube content. Keep UP the great work ! (I love this historical period, could you make future videos about the birth of France during the Vth ans VIth century ? I'd be awesome!)

Arben Kikaj

What an excellent video!! You really are on your A game now, the whole package and presentation of each video is so professional, exciting and always extremely informative. I appreciated the insight into Procopius too, I love these details that would be missed out elsewhere on youtube or even TV

For The Game

Genghis khans " i am the punishment of god" epic speech would be cool

Joseph Dell

Toby, at 8:20 Bosporus is missing an h isn't it?

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

I love the recounting of the duels in Robert Graves' "Count Belisarius." And how after he dispatched the two Persians Andreas was offered the rank and position of sergeant within Belisarius's household regiment, but he refused as he was quite happy being a wrestling coach and personal trainer.

Joseph Dell

Really a forgotten time period of history. Even more forgotten is Narses, the other great commander of Justinian's. Great video Toby!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Thibaut - after this we've got 1848, then some more Napoleon!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Arben, yes it's been great to talk a little about Herodotus in the last video, and now Procopius.

EpicHistoryTV

I am informed that Bosporus is the more usual spelling these days. I grew up with 'Bosphorus', and wasn't troubled enough to correct Charles when he read it like that!

EpicHistoryTV

I don't know that one, but sounds good! Also sounds like the words a Christian chronicler would put in his mouth?!

jack daniels

nisibis is spelled wrongly >:(

EpicHistoryTV

Good spot! You win the merch for typo prize! I'll be in touch to arrange.

Awesome video can’t wait for more only thing I’d say is one or two of the really high pitched sound affects are a little too piercing for me and I much refer solid colours for maps rather than stripes. Have you heard of the history of Byzantium podcast? I hadn’t but with this series I might check it out. my friend met his wife recently and apparently he’s a big fan of the Channel.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart! Let me know if you have any timings for where you think the SFX are too loud and I will take another look. I have heard of the podcast, I hear it's a good one.

Stuart Carver

Around 10.00 and 18.12 perhaps a little piercing, minor point. Might be a good companion piece to this series I’m thinking as I definitely lack knowledge in this area

Sean Fitzgerald

Great video! Looking forward to the rest. FYI - the YouTube link sends it back to Vimeo.

luc

Sorry, I'll just allow myself a remark: on the Youtub version of the video, when I watch with the English subtitles (I'm not an native English-speaker and it's helpfull to sometimes have the text), could you do make attention to line breaks (touch enter) in the subtitles, which go back unnecessarily.

EpicHistoryTV

Sorry luc, the timings of captions are set automatically by YouTube.

Adrian Nilsson

Already loving this series, great work! Quick question, what is the opening music track called? Is it on filmstro?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Adrian! Track is called Beneath the Surface, this one's actually from Premium Beat.
