Dear Voting Citizens of Patreon,

As promised, here is the first of two votes on upcoming Napoleon topics. This one is for the mini-series (3-4 episodes) covering a campaign, which will go into production  after our 1848 and HMS Victory videos.

Your choices are:

Italy 1796: 26-year old General Bonaparte takes command of a hungry and demoralised French Army of Italy, and leads it to a series of stunning victories over the Austrians, including Lodi, Arcole and Rivoli. These are the battlefields on which the Napoleonic legend first takes shape.

Egypt 1798: strategically dubious and ill-fated perhaps, but the romance and drama of Napoleon's Egyptian expedition is the stuff of legend. The young Lannes, Davout and Murat achieve extraordinary feats, as Napoleon smashes the Mamluks at the Battle of the Pyramids.

Marengo 1800: Napoleon cross the Alps in one of the most famous manoeuvres in military history, catching the Austrians by surprise, while Masséna holds out heroically in Genoa. The Battle of Marengo is a near run thing, but victory secures Napoleon's position as France's First Consul.

Hundred Days 1815 (Redux): the very first Epic History TV video was made for the 2015 bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo. It has the key ingredients - Charles Nove, dramatic music, little coloured blocks moving about a map - but imagine the campaign remade with the sophistication and scale of our Leipzig video! The remake would feature detailed coverage of Quatre-Bras, Ligny, and of course Waterloo.

'All of the Above' is not an option! But topics that don't win this time will return in future. Vote is open for two weeks. I look forward to your decision!

If you ask me, I'd like all of them, so I'll choose 1796 to start with 🙄

Sean Leavey

Agreed! In chronological order Italy would come first too!

A.G

If some of these are returning for future votes then I'd want it to be in chronological order. Italy 1796 for me

luc

Marengo is less know but it was a very decisive battle and epic, with reversals of situation.

luc

it's maybe the occasion to speaks about political bases of the Empire, and the diplomatic situation between the Directory and the Empire. Even if the first Italian campaign is a strategical masterpiece

Blagovest Tsvetkov

Same as the above - would like to see all these in chronological order, so voting for 1796 as the first one. Also, specifically for the 1815 one, please also feature some additional background for Napoleon's return from exile - the political and social backdrop leading up to the campaign itself.

Eiko Streitz

I add Option nr. 5: Eylau !!! 😉 But Marengo is cool, too

Astra Solace

Technically if you want to go by chronological order, there's also: Battle of Saorgio, 1794 13 Vendémiaire, 1795 And we can also cover the Battle of Valmy, 1792. Although Napoleon did not participate in it, it was the most critical battle post-1789 Revolution for the French to raise their morale in hopes that they could crush all foreign invaders without a monarchy governing them anymore. Also not to forget, the famous Battle of Trafalgar.

Andrew Robson

Italy is by far the most interesting.

Andrew Robson

Egypt is more interesting for the hilarious attempts to woo the Islamic populace from ‘Ali Bonapart’.

Andrew Robson

Marengo was crucial, but more important in ending the War of The Second Coalition was Hohenlinden. General Moreau didn’t have the same propaganda machine though.

Luca Vecchione

I voted Italy but Marengo and Egypt would be great too!! hopefully will be covered next!!

Marc Jamali

Voted Italy so you can go in order and do all of the above eventually.

Chirag

I second this motion 😄

JDusk

This poll is like asking me to choose my favorite food. uuuuuugh!

Amin Ibrahim

These are all fantastic choices. If I had to pick one, it has to be the hundred days. There’s been great new scholarship on this such as Andrew Field’s books, and it really is the iconic napoleonic battle. It’s due for an update into the new style, which is just fantastic.

Andrew Herbst

Italy sounds amazing, I am ignorant of this campaign- will this video also look at events 'back home' in France since technically the Revolution is still going on in the late 1790s? Excited for what's to come!

EpicHistoryTV

Only to the extent that it impacts the campaign! Gotta stay focused..

Bluewarrior514

I picked hundred days, It would be interesting to see a redo of your first video with the production value you have now

Hethwill Wargames

Voted Italy as it is still technically part of the French Revolutionary Wars, which I hope to see fully covered one day :) In any case I am really looking forward to whatever comes.

Hugo

I voted Waterloo, because it’s the reason I became interested in the period and it’s the battle that fascinates me the most. However, having to wait a little while longer for a redux doesn’t matter since the other options will be great as well!

Major Max's Movies

I need a way to vote for all 4 because I know they’ll all be amazing!

Tom Vansel

My vote is for the Hundred Days 1815 (Redux), this is an excellent opportunity to revisit and explore the 100 days and end out Napoleon's career as Emperor. When that is accomplished, it would be prudent to return to the very beginning of his military command.

William Rooney

Such a hard choice! I did my senior thesis on the leadership of Napoleon and your videos were one of my main inspirations! Italy seems the most fascinating to learn about the early Napoleon, how he took the army of Italy from a rag tag force and developed them into an effective fighting force. Thank you for everything!

Sergei

My vote is on the Italian campaign

Mathew T

Hohenlinden was a great victory, but Moreau was no Napoleon.

RiseofArn

cant wait for all of the videos!

Stuart Carver

I mean obviously all of them eventually but I do really want to see 100 days covered with more emphasis on linger and quarters bras. 👍 also think you new thumbnail for the Spanish ulcer says 1808 instead of 1809?

Line_of_Blood

Did you ever have that drink at Waterloo or trafalgar pub with the real time history team over the Russian campaign? I would imagine it would be a great podcast to listen to. What did you think of the RTH’s coverage of the Russian campaign? I thought it was amazing, shame the YouTube algorithm doesn’t give it the attention it deserves

EpicHistoryTV

Hey Raymond, I haven't got to meet with the RTH team lately, but we've had a few pints in the past in London, including one time at the Waterloo pub! I thought their Russia series was great. I like how their format gives them the opportunity to explore a lot of side-topics and use a lot of primary sources, plus the advantage of Jesse's language skills for research.

Henrik Granängen

I really hope Italy will win. Not because it is the most interesting, but it would be great to follow Napoleons journey from the start up to Austerlitz in order.

SCL

Have you ever considered doing a video on Baron Dominique Larrey? Thanks for all the work you put into your videos!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, and yes I have! Larrey is a remarkable figure. However I think it would be a very tricky video to illustrate. Something on medical care more generally might be feasible (but even then, they didn't tend to paint the hospitals or the wounded - with some notable exceptions).

Miibez

Was Larrey the surgeon that amputated Lannes' leg?

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed. The best in the business, which in those days meant - fast!

SCL

Ah noted. I hadn't considered the lack of paintings etc!

MarbleHit

we would also need the battle of Marengo for that

Henrik Granängen

Yeah we would need Egypt as well, hoping to see them all in order!
