Dear Patrons,

I am very pleased to share exclusive ad-free, early access to 1848: Europe's Year of Revolutions.

Some of you may remember me promising that this would be a shorter video! It's not happened - there was just too much good stuff to include (and lots of details I still had to leave out.) I'm not sure I've ever made a video packed with more historical information than this one. Yet it remains merely a narrative overview of the year's events, with some brief words about their complex causes and huge consequences. I hope you find it interesting, and for those wanting to learn more, I recommend Mike Rapport's '1848: Year of Revolution'.

'Merch for Typos' is in effect - first one to spot a spelling error (or other silly mistake) gets any item from the shop as thanks. (I've already spotted the  frame edge at 22.35). More production updates (and another Napoleon vote) coming soon...

And thank you for your support!

Toby

Just finished watching im proud to be a Patreon of you

Not an error per se but I demand Stockholm be represented on the map! Or there will be a revolutionary crowd outside your office! Excellent quality content as always! What a fascinating, dramatic but short-lived event in European history!

Adam Hoskins

2:40-French Liberal POLITICAN? Or politician? ❤️

Kevin Xu

I’m like that Leonardo DiCaprio meme whenever I see a younger face of a famous person

Kevin Xu

Also a bit of an American bias but surprised the refugees to America in 1848 wasn’t mentioned, the Irish potato famine and failed German, polish, and Italian revolts helped make the modern New York City and other urban centers of the USA

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Sorry about Stockholm, it very nearly made it into the script, but just not quite enough going on!

EpicHistoryTV

There are so, so many interesting details I had to leave out for the sake of duration. It seemed like half the German and Hungarian revolutionaries went off to become generals in the American Civil War!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Adam! You're our Merch for Typos winner! Will be in touch to arrange prize.

Rick Reactions

I understand! But come on...it was a free Napoleon reference with the House of Bernadotte and all that :D

Hethwill Wargames

Superb production. Proud to be a patron. As a slight sidenote note, which falls outside the 1848 timeframe, first anti absolutism war was the Portuguese Liberal Wars back in the 1830's. Turned the monarchy into a constitutional one.

Tom Vansel

What an incredibly timely and excellent video Toby! Very honoured to be patron. I have little doubt this video will resonate quickly across the web, congratulations on the "World War One (2021 Re-edit)" reaching over 12 million views!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Tom! Great to have your support, and thanks for letting me know about that milestone! Amazing that old video is still going so strong. (the previous version got another few million too!)

Astra Solace

Truly another epic video Toby, glad that there's finally going to be a very visual video on the 1848 Revolutions on Youtube haha. Didn't expect it to be this long, but one thing I love was how you make your videos seem like sequels to one another. Like how you made the Decembrist revolts sort of like a spinoff sequel aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, and this 1848 video also carries on the stance by Emperor Nicolas from the Decembrist videos. I know all of European history is connected, but trying to visually link them is really cool and awesome. (Of course, there's also always other content to eventually link this 1848 video to the WW1 video you made too, and from WW1 to WW2, and WW2 to the Suez Crisis) Thank you, Charles & the rest of the team for all your work thus far! Now, onwards to the next Napoléon video!

Job Franschman

Amazing video. You mentioned the Netherlands in two sentences so I am happy haha.

Claudiu Toea

This was a great video. But i wished you made honorary mentions of Belgium, Switzerland and Sweden.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, very glad you enjoyed it. It's sort of happened by accident, how the Decembrists were all Napoleonic Wars veterans, and now they pop up in this one! At least I knew were to find a good picture...

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, and apologies, I really wanted to squeeze them in but the video was already way too long - hard decisions had to be made!

JDusk

you weren't kidding, so much happened in such a short span of time. Whew, new events happened like wild fire. I May have to take you up on that book suggestion.

Andrew Robson

Great video, well worth waiting for. Is the Czech nationalist flag correct though?

Plebeius

This is amazing. Obviously impossible to cover everything, but I love the little detail about the composition of the Radetzky March, and then the call back to it in the outro. Gives it such a different weight to realize what you're listening it!

Gavin Gates

Whenever I watch one of your videos I get dragged into that era of history. I’m sure I’ll be obsessed for the next week lol

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Andrew. That's the flag of Bohemia, which looks confusingly like the Polish flag.

EpicHistoryTV

Great to hear! I've always intended the videos to act as gateway drugs..

EpicHistoryTV

I'm sure it will happen one day, but it missed out in the recent vote to Italy 1796.

EpicHistoryTV

It's very readable, and you can find out about lots of the fascinating stuff I had to leave out. The scale and desperation of the fighting in Hungary is really striking.

Line_of_Blood

Awesome video, you could always add some footnotes in the end credits like in historymarche’s videos for some facts that you left out in the main video but think deserves a mention. It’s always hard to figure what should be left out because all of it is interesting

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Raymond! Yes I think Balthasar at BazBattles started that trend of 'footnotes' a while ago. It's an interesting option, and yes it's difficult to leave things out sometimes.

Kristian Nieminen

I absolutely loved this, amazing work from you (as always) To be honest, this was so amazing, that now I just yearn for more revolutions, the German revolution(s) of 1918-1920s is of special interest to me :D

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Kristian! Yes, the German revolutions are very interesting and dramatic. I think The Great War channel has some good episodes on that, it would be worth checking out .

Andrew Herbst

"...promising that this would be a shorter video! It's not happened..." That is perfectly okay!!! I watched this yesterday and again today, great work, especially trying to condense everything... Can we expect another video in August or is September the goal?

Kristian Nieminen

Yes, they have a few episodes (two and a half I think?) on it, but I have lately found out, that the German revolutions of 1918 are not at all well covered in documentaries, or in books. Or rather, I should perhaps say English documentaries as I am pretty sure there's more stuff in German. And what's most important, there's no epic history take on the subject, with beautiful maps, animation and the smoothest narration in the industry :D

Jom

Truly amazing and enjoyable. Thank you for the content can’t wait for more!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Yes aiming for HMS Victory Part 1 at end of August, but more news shortly.

Bence Fehér

I really hope one day you'll cover the Hungarian revolution in detail

Max Brinkmann

Great video. I can’t wait for the upcoming napoleon Stuff. The marshals series was my favorite thing on youtube

Andrew Herbst

Wonderful. Also, I see congratulations are in order for 150,000,000+ views on the Youtube channel! What an accomplishment.

EpicHistoryTV

I assume you mean the YouTube thumbnail? Yes I will.

Samuel Contreras

That was awesome, you should do The Meji restoration next

Discorules

Epic history as always. Never disappointed by the narration and beautiful graphics.

FAVIER

Awesome !

Stuart Carver

Aweomse as ever I’ll been playing the Radetzky March on a loop “for decades to come”

Rafael Perez

I can't help but to draw parallels to the current 2020's socio-economic world situation.

Styll Fresco

One slight suggestion. The font used in the quotations does not really go well with the Epic History brand. My personal unprofessional opinion. But obv you know best 😊

Samuel Pattinasarane

I would agree with Styll, the Napoleon or Bellisarius style works best

noctorious

Great video, I have always found 1848 really interesting. I look forward to more!

Danny Gonzalez

Love the video Epic History any chance will you discuss Maximilian I of Mexico and his journey in Mexico?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Danny! Unfortunately Maximilian is not a current priority, and I have various other projects in the pipeline, but never say never..

luc

Always amazing !

Daniel C.

This video is truly a masterpiece. One of the best you've ever made in my opinion!

D Pink

Would you think I'm over exaggerating if I told you I've watched this video about 10 times?
