Dear Patrons,

I'm very pleased to share the second and final part of our series on the Abbasid Caliphate!

This episode features civil wars, plenty of executions and assassinations, as well as Buyids, Samanids, Saffarids, Seljuks, Mongols and more! It's a sprawling, epic narrative across 400 years of history, and I hope we help you to understand this turbulent period of history a bit better.

Big thanks to Darian Safiran and Prof. Antoine Borrut of University of Maryland for research and script support, Marwan for the artwork, and Osprey for kind permission to use several of their images in this episode.

Typos for Merch is in effect - if you spot a typo, let me know in the comments, first correction gets any one item of merch as a thank you.

Work continues on Napoleon's First Campaign: The Battle of Rivoli which I hope to have for you within 2 weeks. Apologies for the delays on this one, for reasons mentioned in an earlier post. After Rivoli, work commences on Eylau, WW2, a top secret naval project, plus a vote on the next mini-series...

Thanks again for supporting the channel, and I hope you enjoy the new video.

Toby

That one I mentioned for WW2, you really did look at it, way to put our hearts and minds all on you for these videos you make keep them up.

Medin Burnic

We all love EHTV. I have recently become a new follower, and I'm a major fan! Am especially looking forward to the Rivoli video!

Christian Gundersen

Once again, excellent production all around 💪 I thought the battle of Rayy was a typo, since i have seen others speak of it as battle of Rey. But after a quick search, i found out it's called different names. So no typo found anyway 😅

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Tyler! I released 3 music scores last week, for the Lords & Ladies tiers and above.

David Klein

Me when Toby posts a video “TOBAE”

Gage Hardesty

You know I always wondered where the name turks came from when they seized Constantinople but after watching this video it was clear that the Ottoman Turks were actually mercenaries turned Islamic people for their best religion of Islam from the Caliphate themselves, it's so astonishing to actually figure out where the Turks came from.

1. at 2:50 there is "al mamum" instead of "al mamun" 2. from around 19:00 onwards it pains me to see bulgaria not coloured red, my boy basil would be rolling in his grave

EpicHistoryTV

Two great spots, but only one prize! Many thanks jack, will message you to arrange.

Aaron Hernandez

Wonderful work as always Another great edition of history added to the lists! Will there be a combined version later down the road?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Aaron! Yes there will be, but a few months away.

Sidharth Praveen

Well done as a first time patron I must ask who is the narrator of this a fantastic series is a David Attenborough lol

Sidharth Praveen

However, I also want to quickly point out that it was a mistake in your first part of the Abbasid video, and that is that the capital of the Umayyad caliphate was Damascus until Baghdad was founded and of course Kufa was the intermediary during the reign of the blood Spiller al Saffah

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, yes you are correct. I don't think the video really contradicted this? It said Kufa was capital of Iraq, rather than the empire. So only a provincial capital.

Sidharth Praveen

No, no I agree with that however, if there was a part in the video where it said that the first Abbasid ruler had move the capital from Haram to Kufa, who is actually Damascus they moved it from

Sprawling really is the word here but in the best sense of the word, just awesome and the music for the fall of Baghdad elicited such dread. 2.40 I thought the 4th Fitna was marked by the opening of hostilities in 811 so 811-813 rather than the road to civil war from 809-810? Not really an issue but weren’t the Fatimid’s in control of Jerusalem by the first crusade? I get that small border fluctuations may not be practical. Excited for Napoleon to finish his campaign and to see what you do with ww2. Hope it’s a similar style to WW1, sure to lead to an explosion in views.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart! I have the dates 809 - 813 for the Fourth Fitna directly from the Professor, so I'm sticking with that! And yes, the Fatimids did hold Jerusalem when it fell to the First Crusade, but as you rightly surmise, it's not practical to update those maps year by year - it would take me forever!

The more I learn about ancient history....the more I see it in ASOIAF.

Andrew Herbst

Great as always! Love the music score for this one. Can't wait for the Italian Campaign's final episode!!!

Luca Schneider

Hey Toby will you upload the music from this episode and make it available to us :)

EpicHistoryTV

I will upload some more in a few weeks, and see which videos get the most requests! But for the moment, I must focus on the Battle of Rivoli!
