Dear Patrons,

I'm very pleased to share the world premiere of The Battle of Eylau!

It's 1807, and Napoleon is in pursuit of the Russians through a freezing Polish winter. When they finally turn to make their stand at Eylau, one of the bloodiest battles of the age ensues.

Huge thanks to Patrick and Mike for their brilliant work on animation and scripts, to HistoryMarche for the marvellous battlefield map, and to Keith Rocco and Alexander Averyanov for use of their wonderful images.

Typos for Merch is in effect - first person to spot one gets any one item of merch as thanks.

I hope you enjoy the video, which goes live on YouTube next Friday. And thank you for supporting the channel!

Daaaaaaamn 🚨🚨🚨😍! Thank you Sir for making friday even better! Vive L’empereur!

Line_of_Blood

Dang it, it’s 2 am, but I have to watch this now lol

Volodymyr Toronchuk

By the way, Bennigsen at that point was probably the most trusted russian general as he took part in murder of two russian emperors: Peter III and Pavel I. First as per Catherine II orders and second as per Alexander I orders.

Thomas

You’ve outdone yourself again. Thanks!

Hethwill Wargames

What a great Friday. One of the most dramatic napoleonic battles episodes to date. The tempo of narration, artwork, music, everything fell in place perfectly. And nothing beats having the voices of those that were there through the quotes at key moments. Thank you.

Rick Reactions

If you looked up the definition of a "bloody mess" this would have to be referenced.

Gage Hardesty

Honestly when you talked about Davout in your Marshals video I assumed he was along the center line, but man that battle would've proved a decisive battle if the Russians had stayed that is I hope you put in your playlist of the Napoleonic wars series since this is technically part of it, but above all great video

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Absolutely brilliant! You really showed how this was a harrowing sign of things to come. Entire units virtually wiped out, valuable veterans lost. Reminds me of Malplaquet 1709, in the sense that the side that had to withdraw still, arguably, got the better of the fighting.

Medin Burnic

The music, the animations, everything is so wonderfully crafted! My favorite video so far. the wait is always worth it. This quite literally - gave me the chills, seeing Augureau's corps mown down and the massive artillery duel and Prussian counterattack.

Andrew Herbst

Not an error: but when the screen says Eylau, Day One then at 3:15 goes to the map image, could you put the date somewhere on the screen? I did see a few seconds before the year but I watch these videos trying to contextualize everything and like to have the timeline in my head (maybe I am the only one, and this is a dumb idea!) Anyways, great video as always, Toby!

Richard Fernandes

Heck of a SUPERB Vídeo as ALWAYS! Thank You Toby. Keep it UP

Andrew Herbst

Not sure if this is an issue, but L'Estocq's name on his banner at 18:20 does not have the ' in between the L and E.

Chirag

What a masterpiece Toby! Just brilliant! It must have been such a site to behold watching Murat lead all those horsemen on to the battlefield.

MitchyCool

I’m literally crying right now - I’m been holding my breathe for this…every day..for two weeks.

KuhlerKarl

Wow, what a fantastic video! One of your best ones yet! The way you were able to capture the tragedy of this battle through paintings and music is fascinating! Keep up the good work, I really loved thid video!

RJ Santos

Excellent work as always Toby. it's worth the wait!

Nigel Pierce

“Good god the Prussians are here” what a dark omen of things to come years later……

EpicHistoryTV

Are you watching with a magnifying glass?! Good spot - we have not been entirely consistent with our spelling of L'Estocq between the original Friedland video, for which this banner was made, and this video, which is regrettable, but I'm going to let this one go..

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Andrew! I did look at this, but the narrator immediately says 'on the afternoon of 7th February...' so I don't think it's needed.

Napoleon 1997

Thank you very much. This format of units and music during your previous Emperor Napoleon series, that came back is really addictive !!

Jay White

Oh heck yeah! I was waiting for this one! Excellent!

Jan Smigiel

I've watched all Napoleon videos you've created and this is the most thrilled and the best one! Thanks a lot for your work!

Andrew Herbst

Ha! Well I usually do not notice things that like but the quality of this video is so good that it was visible! I was just curious, I figured there was a reason

Andrew Herbst

I understand, I was just thinking for myself that the visual of the year and day would help, but I am definitely not trying to be nitpicky.

Nick Savage

I couldn’t imagine the despair of the French once they saw Prussians arriving. That quote “Good God, the Prussians are here” just sounds like pure exhaustion and defeat.

chris MacDonald

Only mistake I noticed was at 2:35 is prussian general in Danzig. Its just missing a C in his name. Kalckreuth

Hugo

Superb explanation of Augereau’s attack! I’ve read about it in numerous books, but somehow it always remained a bit vague how exactly the attack went as disastrous as it did. This now places everything I’ve read into context. Thanks!

Keogh Mathuin

Gosh its so handy to have a proper marshal on the flank, who can roll up the enemy lines. I wonder why they let a very sick Augereau even lead that attack. I guess illness is weakness, peepshows johnson style.

Jack Henderson

What a slog what a slog. Carnage. Truly the bravest men if the time.

Jérôme Paris

Released on my birthday, perfect timing ! Great video, as usual, thanks a lot !

Knottingham

Seeing Davout almost single handledly settling the whole fight with that flank turn was incredibly hype. Even if i knew he couldn’t make a complete breakthrough

Discorules

Well done. This video really brings home the true horror of this battle.

Eli Khanam

What a great prelude to the challenges that would expose the flaws of the Grande Armee, and eventually lead to Napoleon's downfall!

Finn McCabe

Eylau was a bit like a Proto-Borodino. A bloody fight with enormous losses on both sides with the French vs the Russians and producing no clear result. Another brilliant vid as usual EHTV! Can’t wait for what’s next in store!

bozojazz

Well done as always! I was curious about the Battle of Eylau in particular after seeing the painting of Murat's cavalry charge in the 2002 PBS Napoleon documentary. I immediately thought "what a shitload of horses!"

Ted Vignocchi

Outstanding video as always guys! Keep up the great work!

Uaid Ez Zahhar

Just got here! VIVE L'EMPEREUR! And great job! I think I found a few possible typos: General L'Estocq has his tag wrong, his Flag tag says "LESTOCQ", and it should be "L'ESTOCQ". Also maybe, Lefebvre's Corps besieging Kalkreuth at Danzig is not shown. As well as when Barclay appears commanding the defence of Eylau, it says he is 4th Division's commander, but Russian Fourth Division is shown further back. Also, Bessières' portrait says below "Commander, Guard Cavalry" when in reality he was commander of the whole Imperial Guard, as it was shown in his banner. Is it right? I don't wanna raise the flag of the Bourbons like I had to last time :( And if I am successful in pointing out any typos, I wish for the gift to be given to Jérôme Paris, who stated it was his birthday. I am just doing this because it's fun competition and I wanted to redeem my defeat earlier this month. Hurrah! And have a wonderful night from the Kingdom of Spain!

Breakfast

What a powerful and moving ending!

Flint and Ball

As much as many of us love history this was a great reminder of the cost and horror of war.

Nigel Pierce

So you watch these to find mistakes?

chris MacDonald

No I watched it in full for entertainment and Then I go back and look for the typos cause I like the little typos for merch game that toby puts in these videos (in the description)

EpicHistoryTV

I definitely want to hear about every mistake that anyone can spot - I have a small amount of time to make fixes before the video goes out on YouTube. That's why I offer prizes!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Uaid, a big list! Unfortunately, no winners., Although I'm tempted to give one just for the generosity of offering your prize to Jérôme! Lestocq I covered elsewhere. Barclay is not actually described as commander of 4th Div (it's admittedly a little confusing), but rather a Major General within 4th Division. Bessières commands the Guard Cavalry, Lefebvre the infantry.

PanzerWafflez

Dramatic video particularly about Murats charge...though I wished you guys covered the Russian counterattack in the center a bit more particularly the part where they almost captured Napoleon himself in the town before he was rescued by his Guard.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you. Yes, this video could easily have been 30 minutes long, but then you'd have had to wait another 2 weeks for it.. hard decisions have to be made.

Uaid Ez Zahhar

Another round, be ready, I shan't surrender! Battle of Ulm began on October 16 and ended on 19, you only show October 19". The reserve Corps near Thorn is not shown in the overall map of Europe but appears on the close-up one of Prussia (not to be confused with the Cav reserve shown near Warsaw). The Corps besieging Danzig (X Corps if I recall correctly) is not shown. Buxhöwden's name is actually spelled Buxhoeveden. Minute 8:35 there is a Russian formation between a lake and Eylau, minute 9:08 and it has disappeared. Murat's charge at Eylau consisted of 10,000 men or more (most sources I have seen just two minutes ago indicate 10700 horsemen). Honestly, I don't even know, I am just looking at any piece of text and analysing it for the most minor fault, I kid you not I read every single one of the Russian divisional banners looking for a misspelling like "Dvision" or smth. The last thing that comes to mind is that on the first day, 4th Division is shown on the front line, and on the 2nd it is shown on the second line. Anyways, I will still look again if this was not it, but I also must say: the music, narrations, animations were BEAUTIFUL, and there was great attention to detail, especially with the whole field of snow being covered in pink stains to symbolise the blood. Honestly a masterpiece, and every single penny and every single second I awaited for this were worth it without a doubt! Vive l'empereur!

Melodic Meerkat

More than any other, this video and this battle hits home the brutality of the fighting. As that Chasseur remarked, I went away horror struck.

Piggybuuboo

It may be too much but now I want all battle as high quality like this. Damn, it is so epic battle presented in an epic and dramatic way. Back and forth, no one held much more advantage than other. Love this!

EpicHistoryTV

I'm in awe of your attention to detail, but I think we're drifting slightly away from typos here! These all look like production / editorial decisions to me (though certainly not beyond criticism).

Amin Ibrahim

Great video, I really enjoyed it. Quatre Bras, Ligny, and Waterloo really need the modern treatment, especially with all the new scholarship on the topic!

Leonardo Espino

Excellent as always! What is interesting and what makes me like about the videos (and series if you watch them all) is how important figures on future events are treated as foreshadowing. For example on prince bregation or on L’Ecstoc’s chief of staff Scharnhorst… mysterious figures in the episode that in the future will become key in napoleons downfall in Russia

Uaid Ez Zahhar

"Victory belongs to the most persevering." -Napoleon Bonaparte. I shall look for every single fault in every single piece of text. Then, I shall bring you the fruit of my victory. Because, in the end, my victory shall be irrefutable! But, until then... I propose a flag of truce (or the Bourbons, however you wish to call it):🏳. Also, in spirit of this truce: what is the song played during the aftermath of Eylau, at minute 20? Thank you for this awesome content as always! Vive l'Empereur!

Marcos

All these Napoleonic War videos put toguehter are nothing short of a audiovisual jewel for history fans. It's such a shame that they'll do only a movie! For God's sake, the guy deveserves nothing short of a series!

Stuart Carver

As brilliant as ever. Getting to see the dramatic and horrific destruction of Augereau’s corps was reason enough to make this. To drift of course into cannon fire in that way would have been horrific. How close both sides came to a victory. 1.19 I thought Bennigsen entered Russian service in 1773 so would have 34 years service not 35? You used 5000 for Murats charge and 10,000 in The Freidland video, I’m sure both are correct using different sources but I wonder if the numbers should be the same for the sake of consistency? 21.40 battle of Friedland was 4 months after Eylau not 5. 17.28 would it not be “French officer at Eylau” rather than in Eylau? Davout rolling up the enemy left wing again just like Wagram, perhaps Napoleon thought it too obvious a ploy at Borodino.

EpicHistoryTV

Agreed! The song is Lost Comrade, by Ben Hayden.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart! I think you may have won yet another typo prize - Bennigsen can only have been serving with the Russians for 34 years 2 months maximum. Well done, I will message you. Murat's charge - I think 5,000 is a much more accurate number based on a new source (Arnold's Crisis in the Snows). So the Friedland number is not accurate (but not possible to change now). And the French officer was, literally, in Eylau, according to the source. We checked this.

Stuart Carver

Thanks I do my best. Ok those both sound fair enough then. Did you see the extra bit I added about Friedland taking place 4 months after Eylau not 5?

EpicHistoryTV

I'm a bit confused now. If you think there is a deliberate mistake in the video, for the purposes of awarding a prize, there is not!

Uaid Ez Zahhar

was speaking about the typo prize. I analysed and overanalysed everything in the maps and units, when I realised it was about Bennigsen's experience in the Russian Army only once Stuart Carver pointed it out (which was of 34 years instead of 35). Sorry for confusing you. Confusing people is kind of a talent I have! :) also, since I failed again to guess the typo after 3 attempts, I guess it is time for some 1806 Prussian banner waving: 🏳🏳🏳

Hisham Yousif

Toby, great work. I'm continually impressed - the work brings me joy -- I enjoy these very much. This one had the classic feel of the old Epic History TV videos (meant as a complete compliment) with subtle accents of new effects that show your growth over the past three years since I've been following you. The style is classy, not overwrought and the use of paintings from the era and from gentlemen you mention at the end make it aesthetically timeless. The battle map is excellent as always. Finally the score - you mnged the old and new quite well. If I may, I'd like to mention Ben Hayden's "Agent" and "Parabat" as the best in terms of the old dramatic and gripping score for these Napoleonic series. The Borodino video did this perfectly! I just wanted to let you know and say explicitly: your work is seen and appreciated. Keep up the good work. Send my best to Mr. Nove.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Hisham, much appreciated! Yes, it was a conscious decision to return to some of the old classic tunes, for this return to Napoleon's imperial heyday!

Maximus Abi

This may be the best quality of historical-battle-content I‘ve ever witnessed. You guys always do such an amazing job to bring things alive, that would be otherwise only accessible through blank Wiki threads!

Walide

The right typo is L’Estocq he was from a French Huguenot descendent from Picardie

Uaid Ez Zahhar

The right typo has already been awarded. It is that L.A. von Bennigsen is said to have 35 years experience, when in reality he has 34 and 2 months. Was pointed out by Stuart Carver.

MarbleHit

Im not even gonna comment about the video i think all of the comments above summarize it splendidly. Im quite excited to see whats next on the line Toby:)

Scott Saunders

Brilliant recounting of the battle - the battle maps get better with each new video; the blood on the field was a great touch.

Casual Donor

This one gave me chills... no video has ever given me chills... a horrific massacre..

Casual Donor

Will you let us be devoured by these people!

Hello EHTV. Just joined the Patreon of this great history channel. Without a doubt, it has been a dark, gloomy and horrible episode to watch. I had never seen, since the Battle of the Nations, so many divisions being torn to pieces and continuous attacks and counterattacks in a matter of minutes being destroyed by cannon fire and infantry and cavalry charges. A great testimony to how cruel the Napoleonic Wars were, especially when the opposing sides were French and Russian. Murat's charge, the complete destruction of Augereau's Corps, and the near destruction of Davout's Corps. After this, Napoleon would always have his doubts about fighting the Russians, not fear, but concern for the soldiers he would have to lose to defeat the giant of the East. Although Friedland restored the Grande Armée's trail of triumphs, the confident, experienced, fully-stretched army of 1805 no longer existed (about 200,000-250,000), only several thousand veterans (at most 90,000-100,000), who would die in the following years in the Peninsula War, once again against Austria and finally in the disastrous invasion of Russia, where only the Old Guard and part of the Young Guard were all that remained of the hardened soldiers who followed Napoleon throughout Europe since 1805. Thank you EHTV, for all this great work that you and your collaborators do with each video.

Uaid Ez Zahhar

Hello, is there any way to get a track list? If not, what are the songs that play when Augereau's Corps is destroyed, when the quote "Will you let those fellows devour us?" appears, and when Davout begins his attack against Baggovut and is thrown back? I really like them. Thank you!

EpicHistoryTV

Glad you liked them! The first one is called Epic Arrival from Premium Beats, the second one is called Spartan, by Filmstro.

Victor Deleon

Might i add, the first track has actually been published by EHTV on a previous Patreon exclusive video. It is the 1848 revolutions music track listing and is available to Lord and Ladies and above
