Little Medals was a short story I wrote for the Pop! SFX Anthology Vertigo published in early 2015. It's a sarcastically dark little tale about our reliance on technology and our obsession with social media achievements. I'm quite proud of it.

I've attached the the short pitch, the full script, and the comic itself to this post so you can see how it developed from concept through to completion.

The pitch is really basic because it's a short story and also Greg Lockard the Editor asked me to submit a story so I knew I could keep it simple. When you have a 'hot pitch' (the Editor/Publisher wants you involved instead of you trying to get their attention) like that you don't have to go as detailed.

I hope you enjoy the story. Thank you for your support.

Hi Jim. I noticed that all of the copy is numbered, with the numbering restarting on each page. I haven't seen that before in other scripts I've read. Can I ask what the purpose of that is? Is it helpful for the letterer?

I picked up that formatting trick from Ron Marz and Fred Van Lente. As you guessed, it's a way to denote every element the letterer will have to deal with (balloons, captions, sound effects, etc.), so lettering guides/edits are a breeze for everyone in the comic-creating pipeline. Letterer Nate Piekos (who letters on a slew of books for Marvel) talks about the script format here and why it's his preferred one: <a href="http://www.blambot.com/articles_script.shtml" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.blambot.com/articles_script.shtml</a>

Damn, that was a scary little story. I love how you exaggerated tendencies we're already seeing today (corporate mass surveillance, tracking everyone and everything, gamificaiton of lifestyle etc.)
