I love the smell of napalm in the morning…

The second half of the enormous Valkyries Sequence would involve even more dangerous helicopter stunts, a seemingly straightforward shot of a helicopter lifting the patrol boat that turned out to be insanely difficult, an extremely large and complicated napalm explosion sequence, as well as one of the most quoted lines in cinema history, This is the story behind these and many other great moments in the second half of the Valkyries Sequence.

Hi Tyler, I don’t know where to begin, but thank you so much for releasing a new video of the production of ‘’Apocalypse Now’’. This video is insane, it has so many stories that I was not known. I loved it because I couldn’t find much information about this sequence. But I learned very much from this one. I love how well you explain it all, I can follow every story very well. I also love how you show examples in the video. For example, at 5:34 we see the actual film but at the same time also the 8MM behind-the-scenes footage. That is so beautifully edited in my opinion. Another story that blew my mind was how they shot the footage of Kilgore (Duvall) when he was hanging out of the helicopter. I am talking about the moment when he is talking to Lance about the waves. But I didn’t know that Vitorrio Starrro basically hanged outside the helicopter. It’s insane and sounds so dangerous. Wow, what courage. I also wanted to thank you for explaining what writer Milius actually meant by using the Cyclops as a story element for ‘’Apocalypse Now’’. I never really understood, until now, so thank you for explaining that story element as well. I also liked that you brought up that the napalm explosion is the same footage during the opening of the film. I was not sure if you already knew this, but did you know that Coppola accidentally found this slow-motion footage? Co-editor Walter Murch tells about it in this video, which is a must-see in my opinion. (https://youtu.be/JF9GqIHPoCQ) And as of last, I also send you a personal message on Patreon, and I was not sure if you had already seen it. But thank you again Tyler for making this incredible video. Have a great week ahead. Best Jacob Joosse

I’m so happy you enjoyed it! It’s really exciting to come across behind-the-scenes clips that match really well with the final shot. I was so surprised when I saw that pic of Vittorio just barely strapped onto the side of the Huey. It’s amazing that no one was killed during the making of this sequence. I think I included the Murch interview in the video on the opening. It’s been such a long time, I’ll have to look at it again, hehe. I’ll check out your message.
