Writer of ALIEN, Dan O’Bannon, got his start alongside John Carpenter with a student-film-turned-feature called Dark Star. But this bizarre student film would do more than launch John Carpenter’s career. It would set in motion a chain of events that would lead to one of the most beloved and successful science fiction franchises in cinema history–ALIEN.

This is the story of how Dark Star would lead O’Bannon on a journey to Alien and with him, the artists responsible for Alien’s unprecedented style.

Bloodbath sounds like my kind of sense of humor! Thanks, Tyler! You going to any NYFF screenings? We're seeing "Triangle" tomorrow in Queens and the Thelonious Monk thing on Saturday!

I heard that Bloodbath played at Lincoln Center along with some Carpenter shorts and stuff. I would love to find a copy of it somewhere! I don't have any plans for NYFF. Triangle looks cool! I'll take a look at which revivals are playing.

Bloodbath is also an amazing Swedish Death Metal Band; with a Brit for lead singer. Formed in 1998 as a metal supergroup with members of Opeth and Katatonia. Probably no connection, except for the name. This stuff is awesome Tyler. As for Crohn's, I don't know how it compares to diverticulitis. I had a VERY close family member whose life was saved by colon surgery that got rid of the infection, and did it without her having to use a colostomy bag. It was fucking terrible. I know that Crohn's is treatable through Prednisone, and I know that Dan didn't get enough help for it. Did anybody think that maybe his temper was caused by having terrible pain at times? I know it isn't right, but I have been there, with chronic pain, and it just throws you completely off. Either way, the man should still be with us. Thankfully my family member is, and getting stronger all the time.

It's such a sad story what O'Bannon had to deal with. It sounds like he never really managed it properly seeing as he kept having to go to the hospital and be fed through an IV. His wife and Shusett talk about it in that newer documentary Memory: The Origins of Alien. I bet you're right about his temper and probably the general stress of his work contributing to his pain. Very happy to hear your family member is doing well.

The sad thing is, Dan could still be with us. Prednisone has changed the game. Yes long term usage does lower your immune function; but steroids do that. But the survival rate for Crohn's and Colitis have gone WAY up since Prednisone has been accepted as treatment. I will check out that documentary, thank you for that! My Mom is getting stronger by the day. Her surgery was in July, but it was fucking horrible.................I am not an old man (45) but that aged me overnight seeing the pain of diverticulitis. She is tough as shit! I mean that! I have had ulcers, so I can kind of understand the pain, but not that pain. I know I have had to fight my temper when my lower back was really messed up back in 2018. It never truly healed (herniated disc L5-S1 and bulge at L4-L5), at least the bulge hasn't healed completely. Probably need surgery, but not yet. So I understand pain and what it does to your nerves. Thank you for the responses. I hate that most creators never talk to the Patrons, so I appreciate it man!
