I think this is around the point the series really started to lose me. Not that it's bad, or any real problems beyond the story is already completed & there's no cohesive motion. Nothing made me "need" to watch the next episode like season 1 did. I love the characters, but I agree with you that adding someone randomly and making me care beyond "He's kinda creepy" is difficult. Hori's jealousy is funny but also something we've seen before. The period joke was good; apparently in either the webcomic or manga Miya tells Shindo that they weren't safe (just like it reveals the younger brother heard everything), and Shindo tells him off a bit for it. So Hori's joke hit even more. I haven't even watched the next three episodes yet, so now I have an excuse to finally catch up.
