Terrifyingly dark with the perfect mix of humor, how does this show do that??

OK, I'll have more to say next week but for now, I'd caution about focussing so much on the kids (yes they are being kidnapped and mentally tormented) that the bigger picture is brushed over, because I think the show is quite intentional with that. Without getting "political" (I mean, it's a fun show in 1st place) let's focus on how Ostania's presented: State Security disregards the kids lives for the sake of crushing Red Circus (pretty much called them "sacrifices", and Billy's banking on the parents to pressure them to back down from bloodshed), and Becky's dad was ready to "burn the area to the ground" with all his weapons for the sake of his daughter rather than for saving the kids (Martha has to intervene to get some sense in him). We have also been shown before that State Security tortures dissidents, and just been told that imprisonment is nothing short of a death sentence. By contrast what do we know of Westalia: their weapons are tech and information, used to try to de-escalate possible conflicts. You could argue Handler only cares to resolve the busjacking for the sake of Operation Stryx, but her compassionate side has been shown. So yeah, again without getting political or controversial, one can question the Red Circus' methods but one could - and should - question how Ostania's made that situation so extreme too ...
