I’m more refreshed now after getting some rest, and guys, I have so much to say about this episode and Poppy's character development, so I decided to make another post for this. This is something I’ve talked about many times before, and will never get tired of talking about 😂. I’ve posted about this before, and I LOVED the discussion it sparked. I unfortunately can’t remember which post it is now, but if anyone ever finds it, feel free to share the link here <3 Without even going into society's expectations of how a ‘strong’ woman should behave in today's world, Poppy is hands-down the hardest character to write, for me. To begin with, I'm a bit more of a 'masculine' kind of person. So it's hard enough, putting myself in her shoes as a soft and feminine female. And because Poppy is a character who treads many fine lines (very precariously 😂), I'm always very careful with how these things are balanced, and how I craft out the choices she makes, her decision making process, her thought patterns, etc. I’ve always known that I want her to be 'cute, compassionate, and airy', as a counterpoint to Tora’s 'stoic, macho and aggressive', and none of that has changed. This sometimes leads to readers concluding that she’s just a ‘dumb' girl. But she really isn't. So the challenge, for me, is how I can portray all of her very subtle personality traits to the readers, without having to spell it out for them. And also, having her interact with Tora this early on makes it even more challenging because of how easily - on the surface - Tora overpowers her with his size, and his domineering nature. But the different undercurrents of their relationship are there, to anyone who would just look a little deeper. Fortunately (for me!), many of you guys have already observed how Poppy has her own way with Tora, which to me, is hugely relieving to know. Someone even pointed out that between Poppy and Tora, 'the one who leads' is constantly shifting back and forth and, just, YES. THANK YOU ❤️So this episode was a great opportunity for me to show how, because of her physique and personality (soft, gentle, kind etc.), she exerts her influence in different ways, compared to someone physically bigger and more aggressive than her, like Erdene or even Tora. And how her brand of smarts and wits, manifests differently from someone who has, say, a physical or social advantage over her. Also, re Poppy and Erdene - SO MUCH YES. To women supporting each other, and wholesome, uplifting friendships. It actually killed me that in the early episodes, I had to portray those women (the counter lady, Julri’s intern etc.), in such a negative light. Obviously in the real world, no one has a perfect moral compass, and none of that stuff is ever cut and dried. And every author, I guess, has their own writing pet peeves, and this way of portraying women is something I’ll always try to avoid if I can. Unfortunately because I only had a very small window (1-3 episodes) at the beginning to lay out the foundation for Tora’s relationship with the kind of women he attracts, and possibly the kind of women he is typically surrounded by, I had to do that in the quickest and clearest way possible, so that bit with those women was a bit of a necessary evil. In any case, I’m glad that at this point of the story, the perspective has now shifted back to Poppy’s world, where all of that wholesome goodness is taking place 🥰

I absolutely adore Poppy's character and the way you write her! I really relate to her so I vibe with the sense of duality I get from her. It's really exciting to think of where you might take her in future episodes ❤️ I haven't been this excited about reading something in awhile.

GenX

Poppy looks so pure and innocent which brings out big Tora’s protectiveness. But behind that innocent look, Poppy has strong sense of moral values and principles. She is strong in a way that she does not let setbacks discourage her. She does have have a tendency to be a magnet for trouble. 😁

Since the first time I read MPL, I thought (and still) that Poppy is a strong girl. Every time she meets Tora, she confronts him, even though she is somehow scared of him. Also, she moved from her hometown to the city, so she can pursue her career and independence (You need guts to leave your comfort, in order to obtain what you want) and thats not easy. I look forward for her characters development, and wish that she can grow along her principles, innocense and spirit.

latentblonde

I hate those comments on Webtoon and I'm not sure where they come from. I can't see any evidence of Poppy being dumb--everything about her job, habits, etc argues otherwise. She walked out of her boyfriend actively cheating on her and was like "well that sucked" instead of crying for days like most of us would do. It's crazy. I'm really looking forward to more of her personality being displayed.

Sanne

I love this so much! I really like how poppy is written as a strong character in a more realistic way (to me). I notice that a lot of authors when they write a ‘strong’ female character they tend to make them a tomboy with a stoic personality and often with some bad ass fighting skills. To me this is such a non realistic image of a strong women! A women can be strong AND also be soft, gentle and cute. Most of all: a women can be strong without having masculine traits. So thank you Lily for showing others this as well through Poppy! 💕

NurseAmethyst

Latentblonde above has made a good point regarding Poppy and her reaction her cheating boyfriend. Like yeah, it hurt, any normal breathing person (guy or girl) would feel the pain, but she's stronger than that. She seems to understand the world more than Tora (or even Erdene) expected her to. As "airy" as she may seem to Tora, she's proven to be strong, brave (she doesn't let herself be afraid of Tora even though she's cautious of him) and quite smart. I loved her "small person, big world" example 😂👍👍👍👍👍

Yep, I loved Poppy since the first time I read the first version of MPL. And I m so convinced that she's perfect for Tora... But she s supposed to fall for Q, first, so.... That's why I m so eager to see how the story unfolds! And although I can barely hold my horses every week, waiting for the new episodes, I don't want to go ahead and make any suppositions, I just love the surprises Lily makes for us.

Lyubov

Poppy is a sweet and sociable girl and a strong personality so much like mine. Naturally, at the beginning she was afraid of the Torah type of guy at first and you don't know what to expect from them, but when you get a little closer to him and you realize that behind the appearance of a brutal man hides a gentle romantic soul. And I am very interested in how Poppy's character will gradually grow stronger and whether she will find the love of her life, which is the most important thing in our cruel world.

Lyubov

When is the next episode of the secret garden? 😗I'm all in anticipation

Dee

I thought that exchange between the girls was excellent, and commands more respect be given to Poppy by your readers. She does come off as ditzy and naive at times, so she needs to also be shown as clever, stubborn, and self-aware to really give a reader a more full picture of her personality. Both Tora and Poppy are so multifaceted, which engages a reader more and makes their world more real and the characters more human. You've done an awesome job with the Webtoon reboot, giving people an earlier glimpse of both of their real natures, which draws in an audience of fans invested in their story.

Vanessa G

I believe Tora & Poppy are very smart. They both have to navigate their worlds and use what they have to survive. We all do it. Tora survives the mafia while Poppy survives people taking advantage because she's small & cute. They also see each other's true self. I don't think at this point they realize that. Neither one is used to that. And I think that's why they are drawn to each other. It's refreshing to them. That's why Tora smiles more around Poppy or when she text him. The texting-- So Tora always has women who ask for his number. They only want him cuz he's hotter than sin. 😍 Poppy never did that. He gave her his card. His real number. That speaks volumes. I bet that smirk, while reading Poppy's text, is him knowing that people do not "talk" to him. They order him. His text are probably like "get here now" or "I have a job for you." Poppy is talking to him. Not at him. I love MPL. Keep doing what you're doing!

Dehak

Well I have to say that in the begining with the first version of MPL I thought that Poppy was dumb but then I realize that she was not at all. She just plays along in order for people not to get too suspicious of her and also to protect herself. I do that sometimes, especially at work lol. I love her personnality.

HazelGreene

As a woman who's been a bit more "masculine" my whole life I really enjoyed how you've shown how Poppy makes her way through her world and uses the tools she has to get what she needs done. Also, I love the way in this version you're showing more of Tora's "soft" side slipping through by allowing him to smile at his phone or him dragging her by the hand while chasing after her client and his car.

larosamorada

One of my first experiences with strong, but feminine characters was Buffy the Vampire Slayer (and MPL fam, if you've never watched it, go- do it now!). For a show written & produced in the 90's, it was massively progressive for having strong, feminine characters. Buffy at first glance is your typical valley girl until you discover she slays vampires/monsters at night. Sure, it's a supernatural power, but as the show goes on, you start to understand that this isn't Buffy's (or Willow's, or Tara's) true power. Their power is in their minds- for Buffy it was her leadership skills and keen sense of the world around her. Not to mention her connections to her friendships (and thank fuck they were supportive females with each other). All that said, I try to view more feminine characters through that lens and not take them at face value. it's not mutually exclusive to be cute/small and also strong/smart. Poppy reminds me a lot of Buffy - she maintains who she is despite the world she lives in. Uses her intelligence and ability to read people to turn the situation in her favor. So bravo, Lily, you've got yourself a Joss Whedon level character! Can't wait to see her further development. PS: Tora is sooo a broody Angel ;)

Annie J

There is so much subtext and symbolism, it's a real joy to read and analyze. Even those girls at the beginning, I never felt they were one dimentional. I've long accepted that you let us see what we need to see for the time being, while leaving breadcrumbs for the future. I spent my teenaged years way up north in a small fishing village where some of my friends acted like these girls with a hot tourist or hot new guy. Part of the excitment was having something new, someone from the city to gossip about. To break the boring village routine, to be with someone who didn't know your whole history and wouldn't keep bringing it up until your great grand children die. So that how I saw them. I know I took a long detour from this post about Poppy and Tora's character development. 🤣 But I agree with everyone so far. You make it pretty clear there's always more than meets the eye. That's why we spend hours here and why we love them so much.

Rachael

Attn: LONG POST Truthfully I don't know where to start. Lol everything about MPL has me up in the clouds days after reading an episode. I love Poppy's character so much, but maybe that's because I can relate to her on various levels. I wouldn't pay attention to the "dumb girl" comments on webtoon, those are obviously people who look at your work with a glance and arn't taking the time to dig deeper. Poppy is not like any other girl, which really sets her apart from all the woman who fall at Tora's feet. ** She is strong, brave, cute, gentle, intellectually with it, modest, and personally down to earth. When she walked in on her boyfriend cheating on her, she was calm & collective, I don't know many people who would act like that honestly. (Side Note: that does however have me questioning their relationship. How serious was it? How long had they been dating? How often did they talk/see eachother? Again, that's just me analyzing further into her past) And even though she did really well for someone in that situation, I do get the feeling like she won't take long to move on from him. (Which, is not a problem to me 😊 hehehehe) ** When Tora catches her from falling out of the tree - I knew exactly where she was coming from when she said "sometimes 'getting away' is a better option than 'getting your way" & ooooooo did I feel that. As a woman in todays' world, no matter your demeanor or toughness, we're sometimes put in positions where you have to think on your feet & quick. Though our first priority is to remain safe, we have to think logically of how to remain there. Whether you're at a party, out grocery shopping, at the mall, out for a walk, hell, even at home. It's sad because while we all think & feel that men, and even women, need to respect us & our privacy, that's not really ever the case. Thinking smart while you're out (& at home) is ALWAYS something we're going to have to do. Making sure you're not being followed, no one slipped anything into your drink, locking your car doors, and home up even while home, carrying a licensed weapon, or something small in your pocket/purse. It might sound paranoid to some, but it's really taking the time & effort to protect your well being. & when you get into a sticky situation to think calmly & logically about it. Sometimes force is needed & sometimes you can talk your way out of it. But for Poppy to follow along with him being a celebrity is HER protective mechanism. The person could have been anyone & it could have been worst. But she thought smart about it. ** when Tora and Poppy talk...there isn't really one person who wears the pants in the relationship. Lol Though Tora does have a lead at the moment. Lol Poppy knows how to take charge when needed and has no filter when it comes down to it. She's a go getting which is why she is where she is today. Though she may seem timid and shy at times, Tora brings out a different side of her. She's sooooo... brave. & while she may be scared of him....it's like she's not. (& i LOVE it! 😍😂) She hasn't ordered him to do anything, she always asks and it's just so sweet my heart melts. Lol where as Tora has a more demanding tone, "don't be late". (Pshhh, boo, I'll be there when I'll be there. *shows up 30 mins early* 😂) **lastly, I love her relationship with Erdene! Lowkey wish I had a friend like her. Lol I'm really excited to see how their relationship blossoms more throughout this series. (Will she meet him? What will her thoughts be on Quincy & Tora?) This is my first time reading MPL & I am in absolute love 💕. I absolutely DIED on the Pikachoo part 😂 the face & all! Lmfao 😂 I don't think Poppy gives herself enough credit, she may not think she's his type (but oooooo is she wrong 😈) she's the PERFECT person for someone like him 💕 like, a mouse & a lion 😭😍💕 Anyways, that's my observation 😂 I can't wait for the next episode & Lily my dear, you've out done yourself with these episodes! Giving your girl over here serious jitters until the next! Lol 😊 Thank you 💕

It has to be difficult trying to portray such complex characters in a Webtoon format. With books, or movies, people are sitting down, knowing that all the answers are there for them to reach as soon as they want them, but with a Webtoon, people have to wait and trust the author that the characters have a past, and present and a future that will eventually all come together and their true personality will become apparent. But since they update once a week or so, I think readers can get a little trigger happy, grasping at straws and coming to conclusions before they even know a character. Considering you had 3 episodes to really hook a new reader, I think the interactions with the women in Tora’s life was so important, and while I understand not wanting to portray women in a negative light, having them as a contrast to Poppy (or even Erdene) is helpful. Not all humans are kind or strong or smart, and having these simple, shallow women, as well as the more cynical and calculating men of the Balthuman group pave the way for us to see how strength and the ability to take power over your own life comes is so many forms, and you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Schkaka

Honestly I love how Poppy and Tora are written. Me I have a dual personality I am a Gemini. I have worked around men all my life. I am a mechanic so you have to be tough but at the same time I am still a girl who is small cute and feminine. So i really love the fact that pops represents those things and to me she is proud of who she is and doesn't act fake. She has many facets to her personality but you always get true poppy not lies no matter who she is talking to.

Natalie

When I started reading MPL, I was already in love with it. Dying to get more of it. And to this day I still do. I admire your work and explaining about character development. I have read the comments on WEBTOON about how Poppy makes poor decisions i.e. reporting harassment instead of reporting about the "chocolate shoe". For me I try to be empathetic with her. Like well "What would you have done if you found a "chocolate shoe"? I probably pretend I didn't see it either. I mean she really had an awful day/week (if you will) after discovering her boyfriend cheated on her, crash-landed in some forest to find a bloody shoe, and then meet a handsome yet aggressive dude who took a picture of you on his phone, you know where I'm going with this.

Lawren

I felt from the first episode that Poppy was strong. She goes on her first instinct and I admire that about her. In a world where you are having to make so many decisions a day it can be paralyzing so going with your gut and moving on is so difficult and freeing. I love that she looks so feminine. It feels like a strong woman can’t be soft and girly. Which I don’t agree with. There are so many different types of strengths and they are ALL strong. I have seen the power exchanges that both Poppy and Tora give to each other. Tora waiting 15 minutes for her to text him back was him giving her time to collect herself and speak in her own time. That is strength when you can make a man like Tora wait. Yes he can over power her but he usually doesn’t because he wants her to come to him willingly, that is strength. Thank you for showing that a woman doesn’t have to be physically strong or a martial arts badass to be considered strong. Thank you for giving us a male character like Tora who knows he is strong enough to let the woman he wants come to him in her own time but wise enough to give her the opportunities to do so 😉. As a side note I have never been a Patreon for anyone and you and your story have by far exceeded my expectations in the best and most delicious of was (girl those sketches and side stories 🥰👌🏻). Keep up the wonderful work. Also if you ever think about doing a Kickstarter for this and AB in print I am so game.

Miss Luck

What I find very impressive is the level of details you put in clothes and objects that really helps paint a picture. I can learn a lot by their personalities alone and enjoy feeling a real connection to Poppy for it in particular. And Tora's car gives us both a moment to see him lose his cool comedically and get a little more insight. You're doing great! I not so secretly hope for you to have so much success that you shall be able to publish your works and manage your own website dedicated to your works. 💕

Vanessa G

Ok. Something is goofing with the app. It wont let me like any of y'all's comments. But I do like them!

Lori Landers

I really enjoyed reading your insight on Poppy and I love the complexity of her personality. She is a great and realistic balance of a real person. I'm aggressive because I have to be, but I do have a softer side and there are times when I put it to use. I also really like what you've started showing in Tora's personality. Yes, he is aggressive and domineering, but he has such a vulnerable side and he really needs to have a close relationship to learn about love and emotional security. What I like most about him.

Lori Landers

Oops, didnt finish... he doesnt hump every woman who walks past him! Bravo, Tora! I think that speaks volumes about who he is as a man.

Sybille

I've loved reading this post and every single comment that followed! This here is a pretty dope community with awesome, smart ladies (and probably gents and other gender identities). I didn't get the chance to read MPL 1.0, and I have to admit: I read the first 3 chapters of MPL on Webtoon thinking "this is probably another comic about a girly-girl who's 'not like other girls' and takes on fixing this manly-man out of the goodness of her heart. At least the art is gorgeous, the interactions are pretty funny and the guy's in the mafia". I'm happy to see that MPL is MUCH MORE than that. The attention to detail that Lily puts is off-the-charts! Like all of y'all have said every panel tells its own story and give us more info about the characters . I'm relieved that Poppy's way of being is very grounded in her reality. She's driven, strategic, pragmatic in addition to being kind, cute and compassionate. Both her and Tora have a great understanding of what their identities means in the world. Their interactions with each other bring out their 'selves' in addition to their social identities. I'm looking forward to the Poppy-Quincy-Tora dynamic because there is so much to explore there! Other things I love about the comic, which makes it realistic and refreshing: women rooting for each other (Dene and Poppy), different expressions of masculinity (Quincy and Tora), glimpses at the effects of trauma and abuse (Balthuman and Tora, the Gangster and his mom...), POC (we're out here ;), strong friendships, killer quality of the art. There's just too much! Also I think a Webtoon like this is great for the younger readers. With great portrayals of womanhood, healthy portrayals of manhood, and just overall more complex character development, they'll get to think differently of who protagonists/antagonists are as well as what those characters are 'supposed' to say and do. Keep up the good work, Lily! And keep the great comments flowing y'all 🙌🏿❤❤

Cheryl Partida

Thank you for writing this. It gave me an even better understanding of Poppy. I didn't she her as dumb but I didn't yet see her as who you described. I think in time I'll be able to see what you wrote because I have a feeling we have a long way to go with this story.

JCM

I LOVE the way you are writing Poppy and have always related to her type of femininity and strength. It’s girly but also practical and she’s not lost herself to cynicism... I have a theory that is one of the things Tora is most attracted to. She’s sweet and certainly not dumb but her positive outlook can make her a little naive about things. That’s not a bad thing and in good relationships couples strengths and weaknesses should balance each other. Tora is wise to the world, but that has broken something in him and he knows that and wants it back. I also love how brave and determined she is, I don’t know if I could chase down members of, “an illegal syndicate” or be so composed in the face of a cheating boyfriend. Even though she broke down when the door was closed, she still held a brave front. I have read through the discover version so MANY times and love both it and this new version of Bobby 😂 and Tora! Thank you so much for giving us these characters!!

Rebekah Thiel Krumm

I love this! Someone does not need to fit a certain mold to be a strong female. I love the discussion that is here, along with reading how everyone relates in their own way❤️

Amy Crumbaugh

Your attention to detail in both your illustrations and your dialogue is so evident and appreciated! The conversation between Poppy and Erdene has easily become one of my favorite scenes because of that glimpse into who Poppy is: smart, genuine, funny. And I will admit that I made assumptions about Poppy’s character in the beginning, despite the fact that I try to adhere to those exact same principles you mentioned about women supporting women (feminism FTW). But we all make these toxic assumptions sometimes, and I am so pleased that you are mindful of all of this and make a concerted effort to make your characters REAL. It’s just one of the many things that makes you such an amazing artist!

Lise

What I have loved about Poppy from the beginning is that despite sometimes feeling very unsure of things, she still doesn’t back down or give up. ♥️

Olive S

I really do hope Lily doesn't get mad with me... But I just realised that the wound on Pop's knee just disappeared....?! It's not really a problem for me... But I remembered that even Tora stopped and wondered about her wounded knee if it's OK.... (When they ran after his toed car) 😳 and maybe it's part of the story... I don't know... Maybe...? 🤔

Ari

I love Tora and Poppy and they way they are developing! I can’t wait for more interactions between the two.

Cricketeer

The most interesting part of the latest episode, to me, is the exchange between Tora and Quincey while they are waiting for Poppy to send the next message. After both of them stare at the phone for 5 minutes, Tora smiles when Quincey asks him who she is. Quincey then tells him that he looks like a “starving wolf that’s just spotted a fat juicy lamb”- basically, that he’ll have his fun and eat her alive, and then be done with her (I’m assuming like all of his past relationships with women). Because of who he is, who he works for, and the degree of power that he wields, he can just take whatever or whoever he wants, whenever he wants. Tora’s violent (offended?) response shows that his intentions this time are different; he is intrigued by this little goody two-shoes who is full of determination and isn’t afraid to speak her mind or run halfway across the city chasing after members of an illegal syndicate. He has finally found someone who doesn’t demand anything from him, someone who is starting to bring a strong sense of moral values into his life, and this is starting to humanize him. She is finally giving him a reason to smile. I never had a chance to read the original series, so I have no clue in which direction MPL is heading, but I am anxious to see how the meeting at the diner goes, and how Quincey comes in and upsets the apple cart!

Lola

I just want to reiterate, how happy I am to be here among all of you. ♥️

GenX

I’ve read MPL 1.0 and was wondering jf you’re going in the same direction with this new one

Lyubov

There's something in the Tora that I can't yet understand, but I think it'll surprise us. I really like the fact that you're Lily keeping things tense.

sssheev

I think MPL v 2.0 shows us a more powerful Poppy upfront, where in v 1, it took a while for us to see how tough Poppy is (22 episodes). Lily, you’re doing a great job at portraying Poppy, with all the subtle details, and if some people don’t get her character, then hey haven’t read deeply enough.

Floydz

Sorry long post. But I had to get this down, this webtoon moves me. Emotional complexity is difficult to write, especially with limited verbal space, your ability to convey depth with art is amazing. Poppy and Tora feel so human to me. I connect with choices Poppy makes throughout the series, #chocolateshoegate (I’m looking at you WEBTOON posters) being one of them. Your fear can shape perception, and anxiety can cloud choice, that is HUMAN. It is completely implausible that Poppy would investigate the shoe, if I found a shoe in the middle of remote area after wrecking my vehicle, you bet I would turn the other way and run. Ok rant over... I feel that Poppy and Tora are two side of the same coin, and this is why they fit. Poppy, because of how she looks, has not been taken seriously perhaps her whole life (I might be projecting). Poppy’s qualification are questioned almost immediately by Mr Lam, his knee jerk reaction was to treat her like a child when he brought up her being late etc. Then continued by completely dominating the conversation, I can’t image how painful that must have been for Poppy. Knowing how people typically perceive her, she was probably over prepared. This was her first chance to stretch her professional legs, and I believe if given the chance she would have killed it! I love how she goes back to her office and has a mini breaks down, I think is the bravest thing in the world to feel all of your feeling. Inversely, Tora has a great capacity for emotional depth, but has been completely closed off because of the life he was raised to live. Even with those closest to him ie Quincey there is the ever looming presence of Balthuman Sr. That constant reminder if you screw up, become irrelevant, or lose your edge, you’re done. Violence = survival. The references to him being feral are so true, he is a beast cornered always offered a whip but never a hand. I love the Poppy sized cracks in his facade. His smirks are everything, albeit a bit rusty from neglect. I love the thought of him saving her physically and her saving him right back emotionally (which I think will be the harder job). Also, their chemistry is off the charts. I am not sure how it is humanly possible to make two characters that attractive, but by god you have succeeded. I look forward to all forms of intimacy throughout the story! Also: Me: Obsessing over new NSFW post My hubby: are you looking at Tora’s penis again Me: ITS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT Thank you Lily from the bottom of my heart for creating an amazing piece of art that we can discuss and obsess about!

Amber Gesswein

I love how so many people analyze this webtoon down to the characters slightest movement and can pinpoint exact emotions that the characters are written and drawn to portray. The amount of skill you have Lily is absolutely amazing and how you can draw this out of us too ❤️❤️ I am so so so excited for what is to come!!!

Amanda Bueno

Love reading these insights into their characters. Poppy definitely has her own strength!

Brieanna

I have NEVER paid for art or books before & reading poppyland & azuras bride & looking at your art..... I have become a patron for extra content & I buy coins off WEBTOON.... I don’t even know who I am anymore!! Lol you’re my favorite story teller & artist & the way you talk about your reasoning behind your work... ugh. I can’t 👏 you deserve to be supported & paid to do this. PERIOT 🗣❤️ you make me want to tell my stories
