There was so much great character growth with Poppy’s confidence, her developing trust in Tora, and emotional sincerity (the wilting flowers metaphor!) but my brain is malfunctioning because in this episode we got TORA. UNDRESSING. POPPY. 🤯🤯🤯 Is anyone else’s brain a horny mess? And the abrupt shift in mood and environment from steamy romance to COMPLETE PSYCHOPATH Gil was just masterful storytelling. Okay so not only is Tora coming out of his shell, but Poppy is, too. Tora is much more straight forward (and experienced in the world of sex) than Poppy. After every kiss so far, Poppy runs or backs away with tomato face (honestly, I can relate). But this time, she’s not running away—she’s holding her ground! And I am so proud of her! Poppy mentions that watching Tora smile is like holding a wilted flower in the sun and watching it bloom again. Could the same not be said the other way around? Poppy has been through a lot and Tora has slowly and patiently brought her back into the sun as well. I ADORE how he always goes at her pace. Even though he helps her push the boundaries of her comfort zone, he NEVER crosses the line. And Poppy addresses his feelings in the same way! It’s so refreshing to see such a healthy relationship developing.

I have thought about this episode all day and it has nearly done me in, to have had to wait this long to sit down and write this. I called my husband at work just to tell him how crazy amazing this one was, even though he has no idea who anyone is aside from Poppy and Tora. I wanted to scream all over social media and the street. It would have been just me literally fangirling with nonsense words. But it might have relieved some of this pressure I feel in my chest since reading this. Not only do I feel all kinds of pride for Poppy but I’m also feeling all kinds of terror at the end too. So sorry in advance if this is rambly and excitable. You’ve been warned! So let’s begin… I had suspected with the last episode that she might have been a little overwhelmed by what he said and her response of, “T-thank you…” made ME flinch along with Tora! But I at least laughed with it. Could you say awkwarrrrrd? I felt the tension of that tiny little room they were in. And having Poppy’s thoughts run concurrently with everything was masterful! I’m so glad we got a deeper look into what was happening for her. And the progression is - sweet mercy - delicious!! Decadent, rich and smooth. Composure Poppy? Who needs that! Let's toss that right out of the window along with all yours and Tora’s clothes shall we… I’ll be real though, I’d find it difficult to hear that too. Self preservation has kicked in for Poppy and she's fighting against it and I applaud her for that. She did just admit that she forgets how good looking he is. She’s slowly embracing the fact he's attracted to her and that takes time. Also that. ‘It feels so new, precious and fragile…’ yes it DOES! Everything between them is precious and fragile. They truly are in their own little bubble when they're alone. And when they are with other people when they look at each other you just know they almost forget others are around them too. Must protect that feeling! And ‘Gotta protect the stinky.’ She’s so freaking adorable!! I wouldn’t be washing his clothes for as long as possible either. Ahhh, her silent pleading with him to not give up on her made my heart pound! It took a LOT of restraint on my part to not scroll through this really fast to see what was happening. So when I did see him brush his lips across hers so gently I had the best surprise!! Because up until that point I didn’t know what was going to happen. And I’ll get a little to Tora’s defence here and say I don’t think he has a ‘tiger-ego’, but hes not dumb. He knows Poppy well enough to know when she’s disappearing inside her own head now and although her response was a knee jerk reaction, it seems in those few seconds he’s had his own thoughts and I’m so pleased he did read the room - erm closet - correctly. This whole make out session gave me tingles! I love a romance book and I’ve read moments like this, but seeing it between two of my favourite characters of all time after what has been an incredible build up with them, makes me so deliriously happy! I’d say this was 90% of my wanting to scream after I finished reading it, was for. Pft. I mean, how incredible was it? The way he pulled his shirt open more for her access. The way Poppy gives in to the moment completely. There's something about her hand splayed open on his chest like that. How he holds her close to him and do not even get me started on her licking and biting him! The size of his hands in comparison to her is everything!! Her new brave feeling she thinks on has so much to do with the way he’s tenderly holding and responding to her. It’s super hot and sexy and then.... Tora goes and makes us all swoon and giggle at his totally awkward, teenage reaction to her boobies. I am howling! But before I get to that part I am so here for his asking consent from her! Poppy takes the blush to a whole other level, but the fact she agrees screams volumes. And I breathed a sigh of relief I didn’t know I was holding when she laughed and smiled at his suggestion to kick him in the nuts if he’s moving too fast. Fella’s take note!! This, this right here is how it is done! Her smile is amazing and it just made this whole moment between them incredible. He is so tender and gentle with her, even I was feeling a bit ticklish! She's tense though, the way her shoulders are scrunched up, her hands balled up near her face like she's ready to punch him, let alone kick him. I wonder if those blurs around her are a sign of an oncoming panic attack with her? Either way Tora finally snaps out of his haze of acting like he’s never seen a pair of boobs before with his own super flushed face that had zero to do with the chance of his nuts getting a beating and, fully what he just witnessed. These two are so freaking cute I can’t cope! Butterflies, they just give me constant butterflies. “I’m not normally this awkward with this kinda stuff, I swear…” That right there tells Poppy everything she needs to know about Tora’s feelings for her. And the way she's snuggled into him with the most blissed out smile on her face is heaven. She was hesitant back in Moonbright, relieved even when their make out session got interrupted. But here she’s just so - so - chilled and relaxed. He’s doing so much to show her he’s the opposite of Jerki and it’s starting to seep in. I’m wondering why Poppy has wanted to stay in control of her feelings so much. Now I’m someone who does like control because as I learned in therapy, so much of my life growing up and into my twenties was out of my control that I overcompensate so no one can take that power from me again. So I get that losing control is scary, it's a trust thing and takes a fair amount of confidence. Later on she calls herself a coward, which I truly don’t think she is. So maybe it's a trauma response for her too? Or is there something else going on, something to do with the mafia comment she made back in Moonbright, that is stopping her from letting go? Stay tuned to find out, haha. Gah the way he’s so tender and ‘intense’ with her makes me all hot and bothered. The teasing she does with him too, the really easy way they have with each other is gorgeous. I love any and all moments that Tora gets to laugh. Her description of him being like a wilted flower made my heart squeeze. She recognises the sad parts of him and it's amazing and deep. But - but - why, ‘And I feel like...I want to keep doing this. At least for as long as I’m able to…’ WHY, Poppy? Why would it come to an end? I first thought it was her self protection mode kicking in. But that fade out...there’s a whole weight at the end of that and I need to know why… Enter Dene and Quincey - I was flinching waiting for one of them to say something about Poppy or Tora that would embarrass them both hard. But all that did was give Poppy one helluva nudge to embrace those feelings, step out of her comfort zone and take one giant leap of huge character progression for her, in the best ever direction!! I am screaming in my own head right now!! Despite everything she was thinking and working through during this closet tryst, she has opened that door and shoved her way through insecurities and I could not be any prouder than I already am! She might not have said she missed him too, but she did one better and I can’t wait to read what’s going through Tora’s mind after all of this. Just look at them standing before their friends giving zero fucks, Tora with his smudged lip gloss and - is that a hickey I see? You go, Pops! Get yo some! Oh gods, everything from here was comedic gold! Tora and Poppy’s banter full of giggles and laughs on the other side of the door, Dene and Quincey looking stunned, “I like the trashy look…”, “YOUR MOM’S A HOE!” I loved every single second of it! I always find myself laughing aloud when it comes to your funny moments and watching them just casually go about their day as if they didn’t just come out of a closet together is hot! So of course we’re brought back down with a super bump with Brian and Damien losing their tail on Gil. Lily, I say it every week but you are a master storyteller! My first thought was, please don’t interrupt their date, they need this! But then when it cut to Gil going home to a dead body - well I just about lost my shit. I gasped so loud my kids looked at me in panic. I was SHOOK! And I am KICKING myself for not realising just how fucked up Gil is! Poppy’s spidey senses going off at her about Gil clearly had some weight. So now I’m just like, run Poppy, RUN! I - I - I feel speechless. That was one hell of a cliffhanger and I’m on edge after all the sexy fun the rest of this episode was and then being left with that horror! Well I guess it is spooky month after-all… In all seriousness, the art throughout this episode was stunning. The detailing is always perfect and all the sheer hard work and long days that go into this comic make it something truly truly special. The plot just keeps getting better and better and I will never have enough. It’s a true test of patience each week to wait to see what’s coming next. And it’s always worth the wait and then some. AMAZING!

I promised myself I wouldn’t analyze this week, because I’ve been going through some personal bullshit and felt emotionally drained. I didn’t want to project my own issues onto this story. But today is a good day and there are a few things I still like to say about this episode, besides the obvious swooning over its spiciness. I can see why Poppy froze the first time Tora expressed his feelings toward her. It just got real. When somebody you care deeply about opens up in front of you, shows you his vulnerabilities, it somehow creates a window for you to do the same, to reciprocate. But when you spend years putting up masks of bravery in front of other people, when you push your feelings down instead of facing them, when you hide your true self so deep that it starts to feel unreal even to you, being put in the position to face the things you were running from is terrifying. Losing what you perceive as control over your life is scary. Trusting that the person in front of you won’t mock you, won’t dismiss your feelings (as she had already experienced with jerkface), more than that, that the person in front of you won’t leave you, won’t break your heart IF you let him have it, it’s goddamn terrifying. I am not surprised she responded in that way. Just as I am not surprised Tora took a moment to see her and understand where she was coming from. The emotional switch between them is absolutely a joy to watch. Either time one of them is getting too much into their head, the other reaches out and guides him/her out of that spiral. Poppy reached out to Tora on Ares Street guiding him out of a possible violent outburst, Tora reached out to her on the pier when she was retreating into her memories and many other examples. This time is no different. He knew how to see past the surface and wasn’t put off by her remark. As minutes pass, the longer they are together, the easier it becomes for both of them to give in to their feelings. “This time feels different” - it is different. It’s different because there is much meaning behind just a few words. “I missed ya” means I care for you, means I want you in my life, and this is real, beautiful and at the same time frightening. Saying it out loud makes it real, tangible. Poppy cannot tell herself that Tora could have anyone he wants, because he made it clear he wants her. She cannot lie to herself, play it cool as she did so many times, she cannot pretend they are just friends, or that “buzzed kissing doesn’t count”, or “it was because of adrenaline” because her own shields are coming down the longer they are together. Each time she gives in, goes a little further with him, as she did now, exploring him and letting him undress her (damn, brain short-circuited at that moment). They both push their limits a bit more, and a bit more… the tension is incredible. When she warns him it’s enough for her, and he gets flustered beyond belief with her beauty and pulls her to his chest, “enough lookin’”- that smile on Poppy’s face? Omg. I felt that smile as pure happiness. Because he stopped when she was getting uncomfortable, because he hugged her/protected her from getting too much into her head, made it easier for her by admitting his own awkwardness (have you noticed the “trembling” speech bubbles? Every time there’s emotion in their voice, the speech bubbles have a wavy outline…) and because he just made her feel beautiful just by saying “I must be losin my goddamn mind or somethin”. Losing his mind over her. Take that self-esteem! Without being pushy. With respect to her boundaries at that moment. That smile is comfort and safety. That smile is feeling good about herself. And the way she felt smiling like that, it’s the same way she wants Tora to feel. So she teases him, relieving him from tension as well. Speaking his language. As she admits later, she wants him to laugh. To feel good around her. To feel safe to be himself with her and to be happy. As the episode progresses, she feels brave enough to take a small leap of faith with him, by admitting their make-out sesh in front of Quincey and Erdene. And while she might be still afraid to face her feelings, I think deep down she is starting to love him too. I believe love is more complicated than we realize when reading a story. Love is more than passion and lust, it is commitment, it is a choice of acceptance of the other person with faults and all, love is making hard decisions, is compromise and sometimes bending your moral compass, love is complete and unconditional trust. Are they both there yet? Maybe not quite, but they are moving rapidly toward it. And just as she refuses to acknowledge her growing feelings for Tora, Tora dismisses his own feelings toward her, lies to himself in the same attempt to gain control over his emotions and life decisions. “It’s just a schoolboy crush, NOT love” - this single phrase loses its power the second he has her in his arms in that closet. The second he sees her struggling to express herself, self-conscious just like he was mere moments before, the second she becomes more confident in their touches, the second she decides to face their friends together, hand in hand with him (seriously, zoom in on that panel, they are holding hands). This “not-love” looks a lot like what they both fail to acknowledge to each other, truthfully, openly. Still treading cautiously, but at the same time venturing deeper into intimacy, into confessions, into trusting and accepting one another as they are, not as who other people want them to be, into admitting their attraction in front of other people. This “not-love” to me looks a lot like love. And I’m gonna end it here because the plot thickens and my anxiety is up to the roof with the creepy psycho boss right now.
