So, Mikey... for the record, this exact episode is why we tell you not to look at episode titles, lol. Imagine ending the last episode on a cliffhanger and then NAMING THE NEXT EPISODE "ace dies"

mikeyventure

My thoughts exactly when I grabbed the title for this post haha

Julio Castillo

I think this episode does a really good job of answering the question of why Ace chose to forsake his position as Captain of the Spade Pirates to become part of Whitebeard's Crew. Is because Newgate offered him a family and acceptance, something that he was always looking for but never wanted to admit out-loud. And yes.... Ace obviously had loved ones before.... Luffy, Garp, this woman named Dadan who keeps being mentioned.... and a new name... "Sabo", who Ace brought up in this episode. But Ace also wanted to find find out if he could form true connections outside of his inmidiate family, and he found it... he found people who don't care who his biological father was, they all were his family and they loved him.... and that's why he was able to die with a smile, because at the end he realized that he already found the answer to thequestion that has been haunting him since childhood. [BONUS STUFF] If you want.... you could check out on your own "One Piece Episode A", which is a Manga adaptation of the Ace Novel (don't worry, it's pretty short), which gives a more insighful look into Ace's Adventures as Captain of the Spade Pirates and also his first months being a Crewmember of Whitebeard. One Piece Episode A is ilustrated by Boichi, who is also the ilustrator of the Manga "Dr. Stone", the drawing quality is off-the-roof, i think you would like it a lot.

Man.. i love Toei studio so much no other studio can give me that emotional feeling like them! No matter how much I rewatch OP! And yes the This musical piece appeared for the first time in the anime. By the great Kohei Tanaka (he is still OP music composer)

This episode is so well done. As you said, I love the choices they made with both the music and the silence. And I agree Oda's restraint with character deaths becomes so much more impactful from this point onward because it puts this layer of doubt in your mind as to "will he actually kill someone again". And as I like to joke "Oda doesn't kill anyone. Until he does. And when he does he makes it hurt". I also love seeing Garp's emotion in this episode. He's been all business up to this point but there was always that hint of doubt in his mind of whether he should stop it or not to the point that once the deed was finally done it was like the damn broke loose and he was allowed to feel emotions. Even if only momentarily. And you are right Sakazuki is a menace. While subtle, our first interaction with him is during Robin's flashback when he blows up the boat of civilians to "make sure the job got done" and now we see his tenacity here it just makes for such a terrifying presence and honestly a nice balance for the other two admirals.

This episode always breaks me even tho I watched it probably around 100 times. Especially the moment with Garp and the last scene when Luffy says Ace's name and then just starts crying with no other sounds. Makes me cry every single time.

I feel like it's the mark of a great writer, not to be unpredictable, but to make you believe for a moment that the inevitable might not happen.

Well said. And ugh he really had me thinking Ace would make it out of this

Anima

Sabo....

I saw the name and totally forgot to address it. I’m so bothered by that, but I bring it up in the next batch of reactions haha

Not much to add that hasn't been said already, but damn. I normally advocate for reading the manga if you're too intimidated by the anime, but this is one scene where the anime in particular hits it out of the park with the music and sound choices.
