Hmm, so in Horsin Around they did the old "It was all just a dream." That's like when Roseanne won the lottery and then season 9 was a total shit show, then in the original series finally Roseanne was like "tehee all of that was made up and part of my book." And every character you've grown to love over the years is actually the opposite of that. Man...what was up with old shows and doing the "It was all just a dream." Even St. Elsewhere pulled that crap (I know there's a whole theory about that pandora's box.)

In season 1, his relationship with his parents was played mainly for laughs. It definitely isn't funny in season 2. I'm glad you're closing in on the season 4 finale. It's my favorite season and I love how complex they make Beatrice. Most TV shows just stick with the "awful parent" trope. This show is never that black & white.
