Been looking forward to this one

Avery Winther

this is one of the best episodes of tv i've ever seen. i've lost both my parents, had very complicated relationships with them both, and this episode made me feel seen in a way i didn't think was possible. it just really proves that sometimes media and tv can be impactful and have a lot of meaning.

The reaction is realizing that the monologue is the episode. Great reveal. Some of the best writing I've seen in any medium and Will Arnett gives a masterful performance. And the Emmy goes to ... The Simpsons: Mad About the Toy (season 30, ep. 11). I needed a free churro when they made that announcement.

First they do a whole undersea adventure with no speaking and now they do a completely stationary episode with nothing but talking and both are so good

I didn't know for sure if I would be ready for this episode after losing my dad about a month ago. My relationship with my parents is nothing like Bojack's, they're good people and good parents, which helps distance this a bit, but I still relate to so much of what Bojack is going through. This is one of the best episodes of TV ever, and it's STILL not even quite my favorite episode of the show (that is still coming). Will Arnett's performance is incredible. I start crying every time at "You were my mother. All I *had* was you."

I feel compelled to mention that last episode BoJack complained about his amount of lines for “Philbert”, to Princess Carolyn, pointing out that “No show should have that much talking. TV is a visual medium”. Also listening to your post-episode discussion I just have to say I relate. My dad, who’s like arguably my best friend in the whole world, has Parkinson’s + Parkinson’s related dementia. And it really, REALLY, spiralled over the last couple years, after having been very manageable for a long time. So I relate to the weird feeling of like, feeling like someone is gone… while they’re still there… but they’re also not there… but they’re also not gone. It’s a very strange situation.

Somehow a single episode had possibly the best written and acted monologue in TV history AND the best joke of the season. What an incredible episode. I've seen it at least 40 times and I literally have tears in my eyes and drying on my cheeks right now. It still gets me every single time. I lost what little respect I may have still had for the Emmy Awards that year, when Will Arnett WASN'T EVEN NOMINATED for best voiceover acting for this episode. 2020 just cemented my disrespect for those awards. Season 6 has an episode that challenges Ozymandias for greatest episode of television ever, and it somehow lost to Rick and Morty. Even the creator of Rick and Morty, Dan Harmon, thought BoJack should've won.

The delivery of that line is amazing. The way his voice breaks slightly... wow. A master at the peak of his craft.

The Emmys are a frigging joke. They're still geared to network TV, where they consider single animated episodes in isolation. How can you do that with a highly serialized show like BoJack? Of course The Simpsons and Rick and Morty are going to win if you watch BoJack without any context or clue about either who the characters are or the story to date.

"No show should have that much talking. TV is a visual medium!"

My grandmother began suffering from dementia (she has since passed) when Season 4 came out. I was going through a divorce when Season 5 came out. Season 6 resonated with me in ways I won't talk about for spoiler reasons. I feel like BoJack has mirrored my life. It's been there when I needed it most. (That may sound sad. It probably is, but whatever. You take what comfort you can where you can find it, right?)

This episode is so good for so many reasons
