I feel like this is the writers screaming at the portion of the audience that defends or justifies Bojacks actions because somehow there are people that do. Especially the Penny stuff way too many people try to justify that its actually insane

From what I've read they wanted to make it especially clear this season that BoJack is not a cool anti-hero that misguided viewers might see as a role model, the way that happened with Walter White or Rick Sanchez or Tony Soprano. His argument with Diane really drives that home, you might relate to this deeply broken person on a lot of levels (I for sure do) but he is a cautionary tale, not something to respect or emulate. I love some of the zany bits that other fans of the show don't care for, but the popsicle guys are not one of my favorite bits. I guess they're just there to add some levity to this otherwise very heavy episode but I don't know that they tie in thematically otherwise. And we already have the Henry Fondle stuff which I do think is hilarious. Sheeeit... the CEO that Henry Fondle replace is voiced by Isiah Whitlock Jr., Clay Davis from The Wire.

Posted pretty much the same before seeing your comment.

As BoJack is giving Diane a list of the transgressions from his past he hasn't shared, you finally get the true sense of just how many chickens are waiting to come home to roost.

This is such a hard episode to watch, because it feels like just a season ago we were seeing Bojack at his best (not telling his mum off, helping Hollyhock, agreeing to do the show for PC), and this is him at his worst (self-pitying, bitter, lashing out, making excuses). I feel like it's extra hard beacuse we know he can be a decent person. (We're also not seeing Diane at her best here, but she's just so much less destructive than Bojack, even at her very worst) I feel like you're totally right that the show doesn't want us to root for him, except I think we still root for him to do better, because we know he can. We've seen him do better than this, and it's rough to see him not live up to that.

It’s very concerning that there are defenders of him or people who try to find justifications for a lot of his actions

It is concerning, yet realistic, since Bojack is a very *human* character. People obviously do the things Bojack has done (and worse) and they have done a very good job of displaying how someone gets to his point. It only makes sense that a few people like Bojack would see the show, see the vulnerable parts of themselves that they almost never see depicted anywhere else, and feel the show is sympathizing with their positions. They overlook the negative reactions of the cast and audience because they already experience those same negative reactions in their real lives, and have already compartmentalized them. This is essentially the same phenomenon as people relating to Walter White or Patrick Bateman. Since they are the target of their movie/show's criticism, any attempts to highlight how destructive these people are is lost on them. Instead, they just see themselves, or even an idolized version of themselves. Someone only gets to that point if they severely lack self-reflection skills. That is why this episode is so important! It's time for the show to look these people in their eyes and stress to them that NO, BOJACK IS NOT OKAY FOR DOING THESE THINGS. YOU ARE NOT EXCUSED FOR BEING LIKE HIM. YOU NEED TO GET BETTER.

That fight is one of the rawest, most incredible displays of dialogue-driven tension building I've ever seen. Two people who know each other so well, they know exactly which buttons to push to do the most damage. It wouldn't work so well if the character building in this show wasn't so dang good. Also, it was exactly Hollyhock-on-drugs level foreshadowing, but Flip can be seen eating popsicles several times this season!

Get ready for the next one, it's... something
