ahhhhh I'm so happy the Richard and Emily finally believe the truth but it's so frustrating and infuriating that they refuse to believe their daughter when she very seriously presented them with exactly what happened. the fact they only believe it when it comes directly from the people who said it and who they view as credible is enraging. Rory did a great job with that party and I love that she let Paris have a job to get a little experience! also- I was righttttttt. that's literally the reason why she dropped out of Yale. 😐

Woohoo! I was waiting for this. Thanks for the double upload also (I know it will follow). :)

"Turn the TV down!" never fails to annoy me. Exactly, you are talking to a baby! lol

This is the episode that shows you the psychology of Rory’s character. Here, she’s coping with everything that happened rather than figuring out what she wants. The DAR gives her a place where she feels useful and successful again, but it’s also distracting her from what she really wants: Fixing things with Lorelai. The upside is that she’s actually thriving, and I’m so proud of her for doing her own thing without anyone’s influence because it looks like she could really be great at planning and organizing events instead of journalism. The downside? I’d say it’s Richard’s face at the end, which is so heartbreaking. It’s the moment he realizes they all failed Rory in some way. She was so loved and protected that nobody really prepared her for failure. What she’s been doing since Mitchum’s criticism is clearly a trauma response, and she’s obviously trying to prove that she’s still capable and worthy. The reason I think she’s traumatized is because of the panic attack she has the second she sees him. The saddest part about all of this is that Lorelai, the person she would normally turn to, no longer feels like an option… and it’s all because she doesn’t want to disappoint her considering how much of a people pleaser she really is. This is where I’m like: Rory deserves some grace and empathy because she’s been under so much pressure from both her mom and grandparents her whole life. She needs this break to breathe, and I feel so bad for her. (I have something else to say, so I’m gonna post another comment because I don’t want this one to be too long.)

Anyway, I loved Richard confronting Mitchum, and honestly, part of me wanted him to punch him in the face. But as satisfying as that was, Emily absolutely destroying Shira is one of the most iconic moments in the entire show. Kelly Bishop completely nailed that scene. I can’t even begin to explain how satisfying that was to watch. Even the rich can eat the richer rich, apparently. What I love most is that even after completely tearing Shira apart, Emily still upgrades her to the better table. She wasn't about to let Shira get away with the way she treated Rory, but she also knows exactly how her social world works and refuses to break its rules. Instead, she finds a way to absolutely cut a bitch while remaining perfectly respectable. Pure class. And honestly, seating Shira at such a central, visible table was genius because it meant she had to sit there, smile, and take it. The fact that Emily keeps the entire confrontation at an appropriate volume and tone so nobody around them notices what is really happening is incredibly impressive, especially in a room packed with people. I just love those moments when she stands up and reminds everyone exactly who she is. Love her or hate her, Emily Gilmore is one of the best written characters on television. She's so complex, and Kelly Bishop brings every layer of her to life masterfully.

Love her! 😀 And very well said, yes. Such an iconic scene.

Thank you :)

I never know where I stand re. the Lorelai-Luke storyline here. Sometimes I feel like Lorelai is projecting her own need for some space on Luke, by sending him away, and sometimes I think she really wants him to do more of his own stuff as well, as it makes her feel guilty that he spends every minute with her and seems to avoid doing his own stuff. Might also be a mix of both. :)

Another one of GG's famous inconsistencies: Paris never worked on any job? Really? I mean, wasn't she presenting her long list of extracurriculars (building houses and a million other activities) during her Chilton days, or does that technically not count, as she didn't earn money at the time? However, she definitely did work, even if not as eagerly as Kirk, lol.

I think Rory feels very triggered by seeing Mitchum, and while it may have been a major reason why she dropped out at the time, I think it is not black and white like that, ie, his comment was just the catalyst for some deeper issues and confusion she was going through (which again, I think is very natural at that age, especially in light of the pressure put on her by everyone and their dog for pretty much all of her life up until then).

It is such a tender Richard moment there in the end, when he looks at Rory presenting on stage; it's like you can almost read his thoughts.

I love the little dance with Emily and Richard. And Rory looks stunning.

10:38 here, they are making fun of the fact that in the mid 2000s, network tv was filled to the brim with procedural crime tv shows, like Bones, various CSI spinoffs, etc. also —they way they keep yelling for their son Davy to turn down the tv (when he’s clear a toddler) is super annoying.

Bruce

I love your analysis, I think it’s spot on. Every time I watch the show, I’ll learn more about the characters. It’s always fascinating to check out other fans’ POV on things.

Luna

Thank you so much!! And yes, me too. It’s so interesting to see how everyone else feels or thinks about the show. There’s always something new to learn :)

Ahhh…the scene with Emily and blonde bitch woman…so iconic and so satisfying to watch!

Ryann Rodkey

totally! it's so sad to see her react this way and I have so much empathy and understanding for that. he crushed her and the possibility of having to face him again would understandably be scary!

Ryann Rodkey

yes!! as much as I don't like her, there are moments where I do or where I can acknowledge that she was a badass! this was one of those moments. I love seeing her stick up for Rory with a sickly sweet smile on her face while tearing that woman down just like she did to her granddaughter. it was super satisfying to see!

Ryann Rodkey

yes! at first I wasn't sure but at the end scene it really felt to me like she knows he wouldn't normally do the things she does so she feels bad that he isn't doing the things he normally does and feels the need to push him to do it without realizing that if he wanted to, he would without being pushed. he's exactly where he wants to be!
