Kim was definitely punishing herself with that mind-numbingly bland life. And Jimmy/Saul was absolutely coping by pretending to be hard and not care (about divorcing Kim, guy with cancer, etc.) Spot on analysis. That bus scene where Kim finally let out all her pent up emotion still made me cry even though I knew it was coming. Such an amazing performance.

The first time I watched this I was genuinely concerned that ‘Gene’ might actually hurt or kill Marion… I wondered how far he was willing to go and if he had any humanity left. The fact that we (the audience) are uncertain is the point, I think. I’d argue he’d just about hit rock bottom there.

It’s so fitting that Marion (a senior citizen) a clientele Jimmy used to work closely with in the beginning of this series, is the person to turn him in. Also it’s Carol Burnett who plays Marion. The actress herself was referenced in two flashback scenes with Chuck and Rebecca at dinner parties with Jimmy that foreshadow Carol Burnett's later addition to the series. In the first scene, Chuck is working out a secret signal with Rebecca in case she wants him to ask Jimmy to leave, and he suggests that she pull her ear the way that Carol Burnett used to signal to her grandmother. In the second scene, when Chuck is hiding his illness from Rebecca, he starts to reminisce about when a crazy old lady on a scooter prevented them from visiting Salzburg by chasing them out of a train station.

I also took those Kim scenes in Florida as if she no longer trusted herself to make any decisions in her life, big or small.

Jimmy's character goes into Slipping Jimmy as a coping mechanism when he is angry and hurt by the people closest to him. This was the same as when he did it season 1 with Marco when Chuck told him that he is a chimp with a machine gun and backstabbed Jimmy when he found the Sandpiper case. He doubled down again as Saul when Kim left him after Howard. It is so sad for Jimmy because he never leaves anyone but everyone he loves leaves him. He tripled down this time after his call with Kim in the telephone booth. He wants to get back, checkin with her and she tells him to turn himself in. He is hurt because in reality all this is Kims idea when Jimmy didn't really want it and he was pretty sure that Kim wouldn't be able to live with it. Now Jimmy has become menacing, he doesn't want to be good anymore. Everytime he acts good someone screws him over. He would have got away with Marion if he'd been bad but there is still a remnant of goodness left in him that Marion pulled out by saying "I trusted you". Just fantastic writing that you cannot be prepared for.

It still gets me on rewatches and seeing reactions to it. It's devastating seeing her finally let it all out after she's tried to keep it together for all these years

Saul and Kim didn't deserve murderous guilt. They did deserve what Howard was going to do to get even with them.

Queen Alicent's Feet

No they deserved everything they got. Pieces of shit humans.

I love Kim and Saul. Even though I liked Howard, there is no way you can blame his death on them. Lalo was the killer. This was really the writers trying to separate Kim and Jimmy before Breaking Bad timeline. They couldn't kill Seahorn's character off with Mando's being ousted so they used Howard's sudden death and Kim's regret to end the BCS timeline.
