GAME TIME! The thing Amos was opening is the safe they recovered from the stealth ship hidden in the asteroid. They only now got around to opening it. Chrisjen and Kotjar ... what a duo.

Did you catch the changes in the opening? -The New York City skyline was expanded. -Aurora is seen in the poles of Mars, signifying advancements in the terraforming project. Also Mars's moons are labeled. -Terraforming towers are going up in the Mars Habitat. Also the ships are flying in the different direction. -View of a new Martian Habitat. -Tycho Station and the Nauvoo replaces Ceres Station. -On Jupitar, the moon Ganymede is lit up. -On Saturn, the moons are bigger. -Protomolecule tendrils are visible on the planet as the title comes up. Next change is in Episode 4.

Sorry to burst your bubble Spartan, but even a full strength Miller would get whooped by Amos. As a Belter, he just doesn't have the same strength as an Earther, and Amos is a tougher than average Earther. As for Gunny vs Amos? That's a different conversation all together. And to answer the question Pudgey asked during the episode about where that safe with the protomolecule sample came from, it was the safe they took from the Anubis. They also took the data cores, which is how they got all of that video footage of Dresden talking about it.

A fun bit of science... The reason Holden and Naomi touched their helmets together for their private conversation is because sound waves don't travel in the vacuum of space (and they had turned off their mics) so the helmets needed to touch for the sound waves to travel through the air in both their masks.

Great reaction! Been hanging out for S2 (and S3, S4, S5, S6....) As always, you guys see so much. I'm endlessly impressed, The Expanse is a densely detailed show, you have to be on top form to catch it all or even most. I love that the writers believe in show, not tell, and not handing thing to the viewer on a platter. They respect our intelligence. And good spot Pudgey - Gunny (Franke Adams) is a Kiwi/Samoan actress. She's also a trained boxer, so can back up the physical action. nb. Gunny is another title, short for "Gunnery Sergent", her character name is Roberta (Bobbie) Draper. As to why humanity expanded into the belt - resources, the belt is filled with high quality minerals, carbon and various ice composites. Much easier to access them there, than attempt to bring them up from the gravity well of a planet. And yup, when Amos gets his game face on, his eyes are terrifying, Wes Chatham nailed that role. You may recognize him from The Hunger Games as well.

Holy Crap Pudgey - that comment about the screen showing Phoebe being destroyed with the news ticker of the Eros quarantine underneath and it linking the two... I have never noticed that, after multiple re-watches.

Yeah they pack so much detail in the background, TVs, terminals. So much information you can get from those. Also wow. I did not realize Wes Chatham was Castor. Very different characters.

nb. Phoebe is another example of real world physics in the show, its the largest moon of Saturn with a retrograde orbit - opposite to the rotation of Saturn. Its thought to be an extra solar object captured by Saturn on its pass though the solar system.

man I love this episode so much. This is one of my top favorite episodes in the entire show. The introduction of new characters, the beginning of new dynamics in relationships between our crew, our first glimpse of Mars, badass Chrisjen, and the lasagna dinner scene is one of the best scenes in the whole show!

Spartan, I’m so glad you noticed Amos calling Holden captain in this episode! I only noticed it on my second watch through but it’s crazy how just a few episodes ago Amos was so hostile towards Holden and now is calling him Captain. I love watching the dynamics between the characters grow and change throughout the show!

Kenzo the spy was a bad guy, a definite sneaky snake! He led our heroes into an ambush at Julie’s hostel and made sure the police would not respond! He was not a casualty of a bad situation he was a bad guy. I know you record these at least a week in advance, but just saying for the record.

Miller in peak form could never take on Amos 1v1. Besides Amos being incredibly muscular and knowing how To fight, simple fact is Miller is a Belter and their bodies growing up in less gravity make them weaker physically than Earthers. Unless Miller is an Akido master I don’t think he would stand a chance.

55:50 Season 1 Episode 8 - it’s revealed that Phoebe (source of protomolecule) is from outside the solar system. Some type of asteroid that got caught up in Saturn’s gravity.

Pudgey looking over to Spartan during the undressing scene was hilarious. You know what's coming eh, ehhh? Lol Always knew Spartan would love Holden but feeling that energy reciprocated is perfection.

My favourite genre by far is sci-fi and one of the most common (and annoying) issues I have with shows/movies is that they "dumb" down the science to appeal to a wider audience and The Expanse does none of that. If you make coffee while watching, you are probably going to miss something important - this is NOT the show to watch while stoned.

Also, Miller (at least on the show) is a good deal older than Amos, both in real years and because belters live about half as long as earthers. Additionally, the Book version of Miller is pretty much a broken down alcoholic who probably couldn't win a fight against someone's grandmother, though they seem to tone that down a bit in the show.

Gunny Draper becomes one of the main characters, once you meet Camina the show is in full swing. I am glad you are liking Christina too, her deveopment is full of swings and roundabouts.

At a certain point we will have mined all of the minable rare minerals on planet earth... the asteroid belt has an abundance of important minerals that we will need in the future... much more than is accessible on earth. That is why we eventually will colonize the belt. As far as Mars is concerned... it's basically just generations of nerds/scientists dreaming about living on another planet that will drive us to create a colony there as mining Mars would be much harder than mining the asteroid belt.

There's one thing that should be mentioned that I'm not sure has been: the populations of Earth, Luna, and Mars are *extremely* inflated beyond anything that could possibly be realistic, and this discrepancy isn't explained by the show. Somehow Earth ends up with a population of like 30 billion people, Mars has like 9 billion in the show, Luna itself even has 1 billion on its own (so the UN has 31 total), and then the Belter population is much more realistic (albeit still quite high) at 50-150 million people. It kinda makes some things that happen throughout the show a bit weird, but it doesn't really ruin the show in any way it's just an awkward flaw in the story.

Hey, you picked up right away on Frankie Adam's accent: She is a Samoan and New Zealand native. In the books, her character Bobby Draper is Samoan so they actually made an effort to find an actor that was close to the books. It was an awesome choice. Others have explained the physical differences between Miller and Amos as well as how Belters can communicate with hand signals and putting the helmets together to speak without a mic. After everything I have seen, I love this show so much but I especially love Season 2 and very excited to see this with you!

@Julien IKR...folks are so eager to talk about characters BEFORE the reactors see them then they love to do the dumb thing where they talk about characters they love BEFORE the reactors get to go through the journey of seeing their story for THEMSELVES. These folks love making it about THEM when it's about the REACTOR'S journey through the show. These types are in every reaction channel!

@Paul well said. I HATE when these types talk about who they love or drop characters that are not even introduced yet. It DESTROYS the chance for the reactors to go through a journey through each character's introduction. If you mindlessly say, "I LOVE Character X" then there's no chance for Reactor's to have a natural reaction to how Character X is introduced...especially in this show!

The thing you need to remember is that Amos an Earther and Miller is a belter growing up in low-g.

A little more about why humanity expanded into the solar system... you may notice in the opening credits that there is a shot of an iceberg breaking up and the sea levels rising to flood the Statue of Liberty and them building a sea wall around the Statue. There have been a few scenes in various episodes where they show the UN buildings with the Statue of Liberty in the foreground and the Statue is shown to be surrounded by a sea wall and the lower part of the Statue itself is below sea level. In this episode, it is mentioned that Earth has 30 billion people. This is telling us that the climate on Earth has significantly changed and the planet is resource limited, and that the resources in the asteroid belt are needed to sustain this level of population. Expansion to Mars is almost a natural progression, being the next closest planet that could be colonized with technology.
