So we come to the season finale.... Opening changes: -The Free Navy goes dark as they reach their destination. -There are only 3 ships outside the Sol Gate. The 3 ships that the Free Navy battle at the end of the episode. -There is less traffic inside the Ring Space. This will be the last opening change post I'll make unless there is desire for me to continue.

Golladan

In case anyone is confused about the battle at the start of the episode, here is a breakdown: On the Free Navy side there is a Martian Destroyer (Koto), a Martian Heavy Frigate (Serrio Mal), and Camina's 3 ships: the Tynan (where she is), the Dewalt (where Josep and Oksana are) and the Mowteng. At the start of the battle Camina fires at the Dewalt's drive to incapacitate it. She then fires a barrage at the Koto. While the Koto is busy fending off the Tynan's missiles, the Roci flies by and takes it out with a couple of shots of its rail gun. The Roci then fires several torpedoes at the Heavy, which they counter with their own, taking out the Roci's torpedoes and forcing the Roci to defend itself with PDCs. Josep on the Dewalt fires their load at the Heavy, forcing the Heavy to defend itself with their PDCs. The Roci then uses this opportunity to fly by the Heavy and fire several shots of their rail gun at it, destroying it.

RIP Alex. Such a twist that to save Naomi we lost Alex like that.

Golladan

So. If Alex's death feels sudden, it's because it was. After season 5 was pretty much done filming some allegations came out about Alex's actor. After an investigation by the studio they decided it was best to write him out. So they modified a couple of scenes at the end and brought back some actors to reshoot some stuff.

Chad K

I do enjoy them and appreciate your efforts with them

Varun Laks

For sure, but I think it's important to note that the "suddenness" is also fairly intentional. I'll be intentionally vague to avoid books spoilers, but in the book there is another sudden death of a different character under very similar circumstances. Ty and Daniel have spoken about how much they liked that type of unceremonious character death and how it was important to showcase how dangerous High-G burns really could be. So when they had to make the decision to write out Alex, that unused type of death became a very enticing writing choice for them Obviously if they had time to fully plan Alex's death, I think there are scenes that they definitely would have done different or added to. But as for the actual "suddenness", I think that is more a feature and less a bug of the rewrite.

Varun Laks

If anyone is interested, I actually own a copy of the original script of this episode before they had to re-write it due to Cas Anvar's conduct. I scanned it and uploaded it onto Google drive for anyone that wants to check it out (the scene that ended up being Alex's death occurs on page 22, so the major changes start from there): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GV0Am9FVi46bWtTsZuoBrZddcJ0GrK61/view?usp=drive_link Personally, I actually much prefer the version we actually got and I think Alex's death adds a lot to the episode and is a sad, but fitting cap to this what is a pretty dark and somber season. The original script is much more upbeat. Still, I think it's really interesting to see what might have been.

Golladan

True, but I think it's important to point out that the death was the result of something outside the show. I don't really like when viewers blame Naomi for Alex's death when it was not a death that was planned in the first place.

Deepan Nathan

I wish they had recasted Alex instead. The character deserved more. It’s I guess a small complaint though in the grand scheme of things as we still got 5 seasons of the character and Season 6 is still great without him

Varun Laks

I think if they knew for a fact they were getting seasons beyond S6, then they definitely would have. But there is simply no way to make a recast work for 6 episodes. We wouldn't have had time to get used to the new actor, and it would have felt really strange to have someone else play him for such a short amount of time. It would have felt pretty empty. Plus I do think his death adds a lot of stakes to the story that we otherwise may not have had.

Golladan

Also interesting how different a lot of the dialogue is.

Makayu

For the final season, be sure to watch the bonus content for each episode. You can find it by clicking "All" in the top left of the interface on Prime Video. Then on the right side a window will appear that says "X-Ray" at the top. Click on the "Bonus Content" tab and the video will be there. Each episode has one of these and they are pretty short.

Joan Monroe

Remembering how much Drummer's family loved and intimately shared each other makes watching it fall apart so painful.

Varun Laks

Yeah I also find it noteworthy that Naomi's final message is not in this version of the script. It looks like the original version was just going to cut away as she went to play it. I've always felt that the message in the episode we got is the true goodbye to Alex, and it feels very poignant because we lost a major character like that. The scene would have been overkill if everyone survived and they still played it. I think they decided to actually play the message, and make it be a somber message about family changing precisely because of Alex's death.

Bill B.

I love them!

One hell of a ride… 💔

That video was awesome, and needed! I could not keep track of what was going on during the battle. Thank you for posting. That’s a pretty awesome channel too!

It sucks that Alex had to go out that way due to the actor’s personal situation. But I appreciate the way they did it - they can always say that high g maneuvers can kill you, but it’s empty words until you see it like this. I don’t think Marco’s plans changed, but rather that this was the hidden plan all along and explains the intention of the Mars Navy from the very start in helping to equip Marco.

wp3

More than 30 women went public and accused the actor, who played Alex, of sexual harassment and sexual assault. An investigation was done by the company making the show and they decided to let him go after that. They had to figure out a way to write him out and that's what they came up with. Personally, I just separate the person from the character. Obviously, they did the right thing for the situation, but we can all still allow ourselves to grieve the loss of the character in the story and what he meant to the fans. It's a big loss.

hypocritex

Drummer is my favorite character. Hands down. Amos is right behind her. I don't think you understood what happened with the red proto anger there.. The ship disappeared when it went through to a new system. . Guess you'll have to wait and see what it meant.. but for me it was obvious.

spartanandpudgey

we appreciate all these posts! thank you for taking the time to do them 🙏🏼

Ryan

Its worth noting he was never charged with anything. The "MeToo movement" had a lot of people suddenly cancelled. I'm not saying he is innocent as none of us know what happened, but yeah its a shame. Alex was such a likable character. One of my favorites in the show easily.

Tony Camas

Regarding recasting, I will make this point, which I've made a number of times, but not recently, so I'll do it again briefly: I'd encourage everyone to think about all the TV shows you've watched in your life; think about how many of them have recast a major character six seasons in. I'll bet you can count them on one hand. Maybe even one finger. And, if you can indeed think of any of shows that recast a major character, now think about how many of those recasts worked, and weren't a huge distraction. I've personally been watching TV for over 50 years, and I don't think I can think of a single fully successful recasting. Ever. It sucks that we had to lose Alex as a character; he was arguably the "heart" of the crew, but trying to have his character continue in another actor's body would have just looked and felt wrong. It would have been jarring. It would have distracted from the show. I mean, look at the recast of Arjun -- everybody *hated* that, and he was a very minor character in the scheme of things. Recasting is very tricky and rarely, if ever, works. That's just the way it is, I think.

Tony Camas

There's a pretty wide gulf between what's illegal and what's "merely" disgusting and reprehensible. But that doesn't mean you can just ignore something as long as it's not strictly illegal. There was a lot of stuff written about this at the time, a lot of discussions on Reddit and other places. A lot of it is still out there, if you care to look, but trust me, you probably don't. There were a number of first-hand accounts, not just from people on set, but from fans who were approached at Cons and such, many of them quite young compared to Cas. And I personally know people who interacted with him directly and reported him to be quite an unsavory individual. This was not a case of "Me Too" gone awry. This was stuff Cas Anvar did, repeatedly, and had been doing through much of his career. And it wasn't just with people he worked with (which is bad enough). Imagine yourself running a company making a show like this, and you find out that one of your major performers was approaching fans and pressuring them to get involved with him in unwanted ways. Is that the kind of person you would want representing your show? Do you really want to risk being sued for negligence for allowing it, or even just losing goodwill with a large swath of your fan base because you chose to look the other way? Cas became a liability to the production, simple as that. And yes, it was a terrible, terrible shame, because he was awesome in the role. But they still had no real choice. It was a bad situation and they did the best they could with it.

Paul

That scene with Amos bringing Peaches on board was like a teenage boy sneaking his girlfriend quickly passed his father, up to his room. LOL. Adorable Amos. I agree that there should have been maybe one more dedicated scene to discuss and mourn Alex. He was, indeed, the bravest idiot, he will be missed. 100% Marco is a narcissist. He may legitimately care about the cause, but his primary focus is his own ego and legacy. If his crew had chanted Free Navy or "The Belt" instead of his name, he'd have been furious.

Lindsay Mathieson

And the one recast they did do (Arjun) did not work out well.

Deepan Nathan

lol…I guess I kind of agree with you guys actually. I just missed Alex and hoped the team could have just one more fake lasagna ❤️

AntiGrav1ty

Great reaction and discussion to this finale. S5 was a pretty heavy season with a lot of emotional weight on every character and I think they did an excellent job of showing that. Alex' death was definitely abrupt but I think the way he died made sense and was very fitting within the story/universe. Too bad they couldn't reshoot or add a few more scenes to make it a bit more seamless. Looking forward to S6, it's gonna be great as well.

Sheri

Great reaction as always! Like everyone said, Alex's death was abrupt, but I think they did a fantastic job considering the circumstances.

Neeloy

Great reaction! 100% with Pudgey this episode left me an emotional mess the first time I watched. The sequence starting with Naomi jumping out the ship had me unexpectedly crying so much. It’s a great culmination of all the sci-fi world building and amazing character work (especially Naomi’s in this episode) Also agree with Spartan’s takes with how the writers do character deaths. I recall some interviews where the writers talk about how they try to have some realism in how deaths happen especially in the dangerous universe they’ve built in the books/show. Arjun was in a city that got obliterated by one of the rocks. Avasarala has no idea if he’s dead or alive and has to just accept that he probably didn’t make it and move on because so many are depending on her. On top of it she was in the middle of an argument with Arjun that will never get resolved. In real life when death happens there is always messy and unresolved things left behind (“that’s what dying is” as Amos so succinctly puts it in S3). I get what the writers are going for and kinda like how refreshing it is. But still agree that it often leaves something to be desired from the point of view of the viewer.

Etta Eskridge

Agreed, I loved the character of Alex but the writers and show runner could not condone the actor's actions and there are consequences to bad behavior. I am grateful they did not just look the other way but I was so sad for the show and the writers as it was never intended. When you read the books you will see Alex's true arc. On a different note, please check out the review of the space battle put together by Space Dock which explains the details of a pretty confusing encounter. Here is the link, I think you will appreciate the details a lot better with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1AEHK8oQeA

Etta Eskridge

I was thinking about Amos's statement about making a last stand to save your family. Essentially every character associated with Holden's crew has done that as a testament to their true character which is why we love them so much. Holden was prepared to sacrifice the Roci in order to save Naomi, Alex put himself at true risk to save Naomi and was going to do something super risky to do it, Bobbie puts on the Goliath suit to save Naomi and of course our main girl Naomi leaps out of the Chet in order to save Alex and Bobbie from blowing up at clear risk of losing her own life! And Drummer also makes a stand at the very last second to save Naomi and Naomi's family also at the risk of certainly losing the crew member on the Pella but also the other crew and family members as well who will be furious at her. It is truly one of the strongest set of characters I have ever seen. My last comment here is Sauvaterre says to Babbage: "Dishonorable discharge will be a bullet, or worse. " Um, huh, what does that even mean??

Lyn Hurst

There was lots of evidence so the showrunners decided to fire him. A third-party investigation was done before they made the decision. The worst part was underaged fans he pursued and when others tried to call him out, he became vindictive. I assume assault was not involved or he would have been charged. Sad, I really liked him in this show. Sad for anyone he hurt in the process and sad for him that he had to go to that level. I think trying to get back at people for reporting him was bad news as well.

I second this battle breakdown by Space Dock. It does an excellent job covering all the nuances going on in that battle. It doesn't spoil Season 6 at all so safe to watch.
