lmao, great reaction, yeah finale was not amazing, i thought it hit the right beats, but it was so rushed. It should have been split into 2 episodes, one dealing with homelander, and the next dealing with butcher becoming the main threat.

Incredibly underwhelming ending but it’s to be expected considering the pacing and how they treated most characters this season especially Soldier boy and Gen V(i guess?) but personally I thought it was an acceptable ending…pretty Anticlimactic but acceptable none the less. Loved the reactions though 🫡

I'm so bummed out and i believe the wrong people always get to be in charge of turning these IPs into live action series/movies (with One Piece being one of the big exceptions)

So I'll try to explain why this season and finale were such low quality and all over the place. It's because the creator of the show, Eric Kripke, became far more focused on pushing real world political propaganda than telling a coherent story. The entire purpose of this season was to demonize White Right-wing men and the MAGA movement through exaggerated caricature and political messaging. Originally, the show worked as a broad satire of American culture and politics. It mocked everyone to some degree and was mostly entertaining because of that balance (though the show always had a Left wing bias because Kripke himself is a woke Leftist). The difference is that earlier seasons still prioritized storytelling over ideology. But as political polarization intensified in America, especially after the BLM riots and the aggressive cultural dominance of Wokeism from 2020 to 2024, Kripke became increasingly obsessed with attacking the Right. Homelander was turned into an overt political symbol. He was written as a ridiculous and absurd authoritarian narcissist specifically meant to represent Far Right White men, Nationalists, conservatives, and the MAGA movement. The irony is that instead of rejecting the comparison, many people on the Far Right embraced Homelander as a symbol. They turned him into a meme and started portraying him as an American nationalist hero standing against woke ideology and cultural decay. This broader phenomenon already existed online. Because Right-wing White men are constantly labeled Nazis and fascists in mainstream political discourse, some younger Right-wingers ironically, and sometimes unironically, embraced those symbols out of rebellion and defiance, like glorifying Hitler. And so Homelander became another version of that. The more aggressively the establishment demonized him, the more certain people adopted him as a symbol of opposition to the cultural Left. Kripke openly admitted that he was horrified by this. His exact words were, “I find it fucking horrifying,” referring to people supporting Homelander and viewing him as heroic. From that point on, the writing stopped being about narrative consistency and became openly propagandistic. Kripke made it his mission to degrade and destroy Homelander as a symbol in order to humiliate the audience he associated with him. That's why Homelander's final scene felt so absurd and out of character. Story-wise, it made no sense. Homelander is a narcissist with a severe personality disorder. For someone like that, humiliation is worse than death. A narcissist like Homelander would never willingly debase himself in that way (I'll suck your dick and eat your shit). But internal character logic no longer mattered for Kripke because the priority was no longer storytelling, it was political messaging. The entire scene was constructed to symbolically humiliate, demoralize, and emasculate the type of people Kripke believed identified with Homelander. It was pure propaganda. Kripke sacrificed the integrity of the character and the quality of the story in order to push an ideological message and attack a political demographic he clearly despises. The whole thing came across as petty, resentful, and deeply insecure. More than anything, it exposed Kripke himself and revealed how emotionally consumed he became by politics and culture war resentment. Having said all that, I still enjoyed the finale more than I expected to because I went into it with extremely low expectations. Once you separate the propaganda and political messaging from the actual story structure, a lot of the major beats still work. The finale also follows many of the same core ideas as the comic books. Hughie was always meant to kill Butcher, just like in the comics. He also kills Homelander with a crowbar in the comics (although in that version Homelander is a clone). The final scene between Hughie and Butcher was particularly good and emotionally satisfying. Hughie was always Butcher's canary. From the beginning, his role in the story was to save Butcher from himself and preserve whatever humanity Butcher still had left. In the end, killing him was the only way to save him from himself. Deep down, Butcher wanted Hughie to stop him, and that's why he loved him. I think it was a beautiful scene. As for the rest of the finale, I think it was about as good as it could have been considering how weak the season was overall. It definitely felt rushed, and it no longer had the magic of the earlier seasons. A lot of that was destroyed by Kripke's obsession with politics and ideological messaging. But despite all of that, I still found the ending satisfying.

DRIP DROP

Boys was mid lol

I really, really hated the finale honestly, but I really hope the ending doesn’t overshadow what this show was. When The Boys came out, there was nothing like it on TV. It genuinely changed pop culture. Homelander became an all-time iconic villain/character, and the show at its peak was unreal.

This show went from a very intriguing and epic deconstruction of superheroes and a fun meta commentary on money squeezing franchises, to a complete farcical mess of biblical proportions, whose compelling narrative was gutted to make way for yet more political allegory (cos we don't get enough of that) which wasn't even clever or well written and had nothing interesting to say about the world, only to now become a money squeezing franchise itself with a spin-off that I am almost certain will be a waste of time as well. It is astonishing to me how the man who probably gets paid hundreds of thousands to write this shit seemingly completely disregards power scaling in a genre where power scaling is literally one of the most important things to consider. Bless you guys for sticking with it, I stopped at season 3 and picked it up again as season 5 was airing so I could catch up, for me the writing was on the wall about the direction of this show as far back as season 2. I don't like shitting on things in the comments but this has earned it for me, just because of how easily avoidable this mess was

Cinemaslave

I completely agree S&P with your reaction. So Disappointing, very safe and predictable. I don’t know what was more disappointing, the Stranger Things finale or this finale?
