This was the season where Carl's actor Chandler Riggs was gonna turn 18 so he bought a house in Atlanta & was gonna go to college there so he could keep filming. However, because Chandler was now an adult, that means the studio was now obligated to pay him a bigger salary & the producers were apparently greedy so they decided to kill his character off & Chandler didn't find out until a couple episodes prior. The season was already suffering from being slow & feeling like a filler season, but killing off Carl because the producers didn't wanna pay Chandler more as an adult was kinda the last straw on this being the worst season of the show.

HONZA

By far the worst decision the show has made. Carl was the future. He was everything Rick was fighting for from day 1. He was hope.

Gypsysoul

RIP Carl 😭💐

Having just watched their post discussion, I expected Spartan & Pudgey to be more pissed off about the show killing off Carl considering that after Glenn's death, this was the thing that ruined the show for everyone

Sankhara

Oh damn, that car crash moment. I'm so sorry, Pudgey. All the best for your continued recovery!

Josh M

From what I've read the whole higher salary at 18 thing is a myth. Now, that doesn't mean they didn't kill Carl to save money. But it's never been confirmed. It could just be that Scott Gimple is an idiot and wanted to pull the rug on the audience.

Bri Gioia

Negan has a lot of people. Our side killed a lot but they do still have the numbers. It’s estimated he has 300-400 fighters.

spartanandpudgey

we are trying to be open minded about it...it sucks for sure.. we are just trying to find the positives in this sad passing :(

2026-10-19 20:00 my favorite part is when rick looks at siddiq and carl says "i brought him here, thats when it happened" shows rick the bite, then spartan when did that happen???? when was he bitten??? lmao like approx 1 second after carl tells him when it happened. Never change man XD

hahaha i meant more so as in im retracing what we saw and shocked that we never noticed. im coming to terms with it BOY this is how a man processes...tread lightly or walkers will be sent your way

o.o

I love it man, not hating. It’s part of the fun!!

The only time I was ever tempted to quit the show. Glenn dying worked for the story so it didn't bother me much, but Carl is the one character in this show who I think should have survived through everything. He was what Rick was fighting for from day 1. He was the future. He was hope. I'm still bitter about this all these years later because it just feels like a cheap "shock death" rather than something that is necessary for the story.

Estevan Rivera

"Everyone" is a pretty strong word considering how many people kept watching...His death was upsetting for sure but personally I think he was one of the weaker actors on the show. His scenes in the later years are so cringey.

Mama Browsss

If you rewatch the scene when he gets bit, now that you know he was bit, you'll notice.

Lumen

Dk, You don’t know that they killed him because they didn’t want to pay him more. It’s fine to speculate that but it’s beyond annoying hearing the fans for years and years saying that like it’s a fact. Besides, I can think of a few readings that combines are in my opinion more likely why this choice was made. Tho I cannot say what they are because I’d be spilling major things still to come in the show.

Lumen

Josh 🙄

Lumen

Dude that’s a very normal reaction. They were very sneaky with that scene when he was bit on purpose so it’s natural to have the exact reaction he had.

spartanandpudgey

i know im only messing haha, threatening people in my comments is my love language xD

Zwopt

i wouldn’t say the crew is defeated, just in the middle of a tough war and lost this battle, without too many casualties tho, sucks horribly that carl is one of the few who we lost😔one of my most conflicting moments in the whole show is all i can say for now but wow it hurts every time

Ivan Rasmussen

Do you hate Umbridge or the Rubbish people more? I'm curious because you seem to really despise them lol

Christopher

Chandler Riggs got screwed. Scott Gimple sucks.

Wesker

will we ever get a fear the walking dead reaction? The first 3 seasons are just as peak as the main show after that it gets questionable but it’s undoubtedly worth the watch

James Waters

When I watched this show as it aired, this was the moment that killed my investment. I still kept watching but more out of obligation. Carl was never one of my favourites at this point, but he was on the road to becoming that, and I was interested to see how he might take the mantle from Rick one day. After this episode the only thing that kept we watching was honestly Negan- I wanted to see how his story progressed. Rick as well- but killing off Carl kinda just flattened Rick's story, it felt like his legacy was gone. Story wise it makes zero sense. Reading the comics recently made it feel even worse and even stupider considering the role Carl has in those books

Tom

God this is a hard one. Fantastic episode, RIP Carl :( Next episode might be one of the most emotional of the entire series.

Tom

I think Spartan absolutely nailed it. You do need to suspend disbelief a little with this season. The plot armour is huge for Negan. Bear in mind, they all have guns. Carl could've popped him from the wall, Rick could've popped him in the house. When Negan smashed him through the window, Rick literally had his gun in his hand, and Negan didn't. He could've easily killed him then and there, but unfortunately, thats such a big plot point that would end this arc, so they try and milk it. Season 8 is a hard watch, but there are speckles of greatness sprinkled throughout. I will say, I think the second half of this season is more enjoyable though so thats one thing. Also, you're right. Season 9 is great, I'm excited for you guys to get there!

Raphael Aguiar

Unfortunately we shouldn't blame AMC entirely for that. It was a decision taken by the actor. He was in the show since a child and he had other plans to the future. The bad decision is in killing the character. They could just change actors or something. I don't know. The plot decision was bad, but it wasn't AMC's choice.

Doggo

the show changes drastically from here on out. I hope you guys keep watching (especially because the plot of season 9 is very good and the writing becomes fantastic (new showrunner) ) but without too many spoilers things take a very different approach starting about midway through season 9

Alan

It’s the zombie series you expected; no character is safe.

Victoria E (vickster5001)

That's not how it went down unfortunately. The actor was ready to continue and had even bought a property in the area.

Victoria E (vickster5001)

You have reached the point where many others who hadn't already bailed after Glenn stopped watching. I understand it, as it did always feel like Carl was the future, but I'm glad I stayed with the show until the end. There are too many characters in it that I invest in, but this was a really sad moment. And the rubbish people fled when it was clear the compound was empty. Had Daryl and Tara not gone rogue and everyone had met there as planned, plus Rick with the rubbish people, they'd have had decent numbers. As for Eugene, I agree his shitty, but Daryl and Tara broke the factory open to walkers and if he helped somehow save the workers then that's fair enough. Innocent people were in danger in there because of Daryl and Tara.

Andrew R

I scratched my head for the first half of the episode wondering "who and the hell is Sid?" Carl dying never had as strong an effect on me. Randomness in writing is more realistic.

Natalie-Anne

Carl 😢 next ep is a tough one. Gosh the more times I watch the more I see the plot armour too. This season has really janky writing. It gets better tho guys I promise!!! This is the weakest season as a whole imo.

Mony

I know! Who is this Sid guy? I've never heard him called that. 🤣

Bill B.

Great post ep discussion! Definitely agree on some of the writing. And yes it absolutely gets better w/season 9, when Angela Kang takes over as show runner. I hated hated hated that they killed Carl, but I must say that music playing when Rick and Michonne were walking down the tunnel to see him… that’s some of Bear McCreary’s finest. Honorable mention to the line, “doing what, picking strawberries with Negan?” 😄😄😄

Bill B.

Yeah, what I heard was it was messy because AMC wouldn’t give him a raise, then Chandler Riggs dad stepped in and complicated things, one thing leads to another and they write him out of the show. From episode 1 this show has been about Rick protecting Carl.

Bill B.

Very well said!

Ludus Aurea

Yea so killing Carl was a major departure from the book and thus is actually where fans lost patience with the show. Glenn and Abraham dying was supposed to happen, this was their first dumb choice.

survivor fan

@raphael The actor has said multiple times that he didn’t want to leave the show
