Good evening ya'll, mostly recovered on this end and thanks again for your very kind well wishes.

Will be back to full strength soon. Much good stuff to come.

Meanwhile...

1. Book to read: Malina by Ingeborg Bachmann (Paid Link)

The story of a woman in love with two men, written by an author whom Thomas Bernhard called

"The most intelligent and important woman writer our land has produced this century."

2. Afterhours by the Sisters of Mercy

Eerie and brooding track that I somehow missed in my early days of listening to the Sisters.

Anticipates the ominous season upon us, which my wife calls 'Summer of the Witch', as here in Florida the year is essentially variations on one season.

3. Roland Barthe's 'The Metaphor of the Eye'

Fascinating essay about Bataille's symbol in Histoire de L'œil.

It's included in the Penguin edition.

4. "Canapé?" - Tom Waits in Coppola's 'Dracula'

Personally, I thought Waits was the best actor in the film. An excellent Renfield.

An over-the-top performance in a bombastic rendition of Bram Stoker's classic.

Took me a moment to realize I was watching Richard E. 'Withnail' Grant opposite him.

Much of it is camp, but the one scene wherein I thought Oldman nailed it was when he hesitates to turn Mina into a vampire.

5. Bindewerk

Outstanding looking notebooks courtesy of Chris Zeischegg that I plan on obtaining one day...

Moon in Sarasota

I just ordered a copy of Malina yesterday. Is there something in the water? Hope you’re feeling better, man.

I just finished Bachmann's other fragments in the Todesarten series: The Book of Franza and Requiem for Fanny Goldman for Women In Translation Month. Franza blew me away and I'm excited to get to Malina. She's a fantastic stylist. And Afterhours is a stellar track.

That's Richard E. Grant!? I never realised! Waits is always great.
