Anyone enjoying Novel With Cocaine?

Comments

Zachary Jacobsen

I'm halfway through. It's fascinating seeing Vadim (the protagonist) exhibit addictive behavior patterns before there is a single mention of cocaine. He pursues sex with the sole purpose of satisfying a desire sensual intensity born from his emotional detachment from both his mother and classmates. So far I'm loving the book, thanks for yet another fantastic find Cliff.

Currently about 50 pages in, definitely hooked so far. The first chapter involving the mother was pretty brutal as was the one where Vadim met Zinochka. The chapters about the class hirarchy is pretty hillarious and repulsive at the same time, all these children competing for power and status as soon as they get a taste of it, while Vadim is one the sideline making kind of a farce of the whole thing (but also admirring it). Looking forward to how the revolution will play in and what Vadims role will be in the midst of his (forthcoming) cocaine adiction. Thank you for the great recomendation Cliff ;)

Privjet, Cliff. I was the guy who sent you the package with Pelevin, Mercier and Ageyev, very happy to see you tackle one of them now, stoked to see the end-result! As for my own experience with the novel, I found myself rereading Chapter IV over and over again, due to its insightful brilliance. Not only enormously interesting in regards to his dives into the human psyche but also because of his urgent warning calls when he's adressing the communist "prophets".. And the end scene of the chapter before this one, for christs sake. When he's forced to shove his own hand in his mouth because (well, I won't spoiler for those, who are still engaged with it) .. it's just staggeringly brilliant, immersive, painful and deeply troubling writing. Spot-on, hitting right there were it hurts the most, this guy's tormented soul and body served to the reader on a plate made of bones, probably his own.

Oh, and for sure the scene where he's eating and behind him a dog is vomiting, and he starts to "contemplate". Classic.
