Did you ever get into Poppy Z Brite? I feel like you’d be into Brite’s books because of the dark wave / New Orleans thing! Especially “exquisite corpse” or “lost souls”.

If you were to list favorite movies of all time, what would they be?

Hey Cliff! You often review books that highlights quiet despair and mess with you on a deep, existential level. (Hunger by Knut and Stoner are two of my favorites) Two that really stuck with me recently were A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L. Peck and The Dark by John McGahern, very different styles but both quietly brutal. How do you feel about stories where the suffering is mostly internal or philosophical rather than loud or shocking? (Thinking Clockwork Orange, Crash, maybe Blood Meridian, etc.?) Which kinds of books tend to stay with you longer? Love the reviews, wish you a great 2026 Cheers

Hi Cliff, besides the classic John Waters quote about books ("if you go home with someone..etc") do you have any other favourite quotes about books or reading?

I would love to know your thoughts on Salinger, have you read something by him that is not Catcher in The Rye? My favorite is his short story collection Nine Stories.

Luca Goroshevsky

You have recently been reviewing quite a few books that deal with the occult, so it begs the question: do you dabble? and where does this recent interest stem from, or is this something you've been curious about for a while?

As someone who reads as much as you do, do you ever think back to a book you read say a year or so ago and barely recall the plot/characters? I don't know if my memory is just terrible or if it's normal for people who read a lot to become a bit foggy as to the details of books they've read as they move forward. If I call up a book summary like Sparknotes and skim the plot summary it usually all comes back to me thankfully haha.

Currently reading, For Emma by Ewan Morrison (which I highly recommend) the story speaks on grief in the modern age of technology and our pursuit to hang on things/people we love in a world that moves on as quickly as the headlines do. Do you feel that technology (booktok, YouTube, and/or instagram) has not allowed readers to reflect at length what they have read? Has the book community space been overwhelmed with consuming books as quickly as you can to move onto the next?
