Oh, man, I'm so happy you read/reviewed this book. And, yeah, I could bet you'd enjoy it! Raduan Nassar is a brilliant author, both his books are amazing. I didn't even know they had an English translation. That's great! Hope more people get to know and read him.

If you want another short, controlled explosion of literature with plenty of neuroses, you need to read Stefan Zweig's Chess Story. NYRB has a great edition -- less than 100 pages -- and Zweig is very, very well known in the German speaking world. Speaking of Brazil, he actually immigrated there in the 1930s, anticipating the Nazi occupation. I have no doubt that you'd love it.

On your curiosity about Nassar's farming choice. Nassar was born to Lebanese parents who immigrated from a village called Ibl al-Saqi in southern Lebanon. He never saw Lebanon but it could be his nostalgia for a home country his parents' hailed from where some documents reveal they were farmers in that drove him to this choice of a simpler life closer to the feeling of home. I guess we will never know but that's just some background info that might make us wonder.

Will surely check this out. Everything else I’ve been reading of late has been very long, so a shorter work is no doubt in order. Sounds magnificent.
