Hell yeah! Reread this last week, fucking incredible book. "And what beat you? Nothing, I went out too far." I love Hemingway, the final thirty pages or so of For Whom the Bell Tolls may be my favorite ending to any book ever.

Great review Cliff, can’t go wrong with Hemingway! I read this story every year, and the past few I’ve been reading through an absurdist lens and drawing connections between the disillusionment of Hemingway and Camus’ Sisyphus. Keep up the great work my friend!

Sunburnt just means you're filled with life, but then again I have melanin so I'm not liberty to say...

Fantastic book -def my favourite book by him, and really distills what it is that makes Hemingway's work so good.

I bought this at a thrift store about a month ago. Read it quickly and enjoyed it a great deal.

I thought this video was quite funny. Hopefully, others will feel the same. It is a speedy three and a half minute biography of Hemingway . . . done by a puppet (an Australian comedy act that I had never heard of known as Randy Feltface with his video: Ernest Hemingway Draft One). I thought it was quite funny anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlxEKOscu0M . . . I guess I can't make the link work. Oh well.

Great review- this was my first video of yours watched and I look forward to more. If I made a review of this novella myself I’d largely agree 100% with your take but mention the biblical symbolism of Christ’s journey in the desert for 40 days being tempted by the devil /shadow self as analogous to Santiago leaving behind the boy for his solitary journey both far out and inward, the stigmata of christ’s hand wounds and other symbols are also present here, as is the parallel of Hemingway’s symbolic fight with the critics who misunderstood him as the sharks who devour his precious art only to leave nothing left as well (as the sharks representing the passage of time / aging itself as an enemy of Santiago’s pursuit). The Marlins commitment to each other is also something Hemingway respects and pays homage to perhaps the only time o actually got tears reading this was when he described the marlin that stayed by its felled mate- Hemingway jumped from woman to woman and never truly had that devotion in his life, it was sacrificed for the fight/Hunt/ artistic pursuit. The biggest fish ever is also the “great novel” and that it’s a Marlin (Merlin) and indigo/purple suggests mystical/transcendent characteristics. The sea is not unlike the co-creative faculty / unconscious from which Hemingway would pull up to surface and articulate his stories. What we have here is Hemingway at the end of his rope, considering suicide, and desiring to write the greatest novel of his life, which he assumes is a big one. The sharks of time / art police/ public understanding are then seen as the impediments to finishing the great big book. So what does Santiago/Hemingway do? He keeps it lean and mean- gets by with minimal resources in the boat, and remembers his previous extended arm wresting match victory (For Whom the Bell Tolls) and makes it to the shore with the skeletal proof he’s still the greatest fisherman on the island. And he lived to see the recognition. Fun fact- the word quarantine comes to us from the 17th century Italian ‘quarantina’ - meaning 40 days. In both Hebrew and Greek the words for spirit and breath and wind are the same word - ruach and pneuma respectively. What are we to make of the tourists at the end who misunderstand what the carcass washed up at shore even is? Cheers!
