Good evening everyone, hope all is well.
Storms here in St. Pete. Jungle humidity. Hot as hell.
Enjoy your weekend wherever you may be.
1. A demented horror story to read: The Cormorant by Stephen Gregory
Kinda Lovecraftian sounding. Cormorants are beautiful, but very strange looking. Apparently, BBC did an adaptation with Ralph Fiennes.
Recommended by friend and patron Erik- Thanks man!
Just saw this for the first time.
In spite of the racist depictions of the time, this is unironically one of the greatest films ever made.
A dark, complex, fairly astounding film. Not to mention a pioneering cinematic achievement -It was the first film made in color (look at that shot).
I love that both characters in the 'love-story' are totally unsympathetic and repulsive.
The ending is so ambiguous compared to something like 'Casablanca'.
Interesting to note that 'Mammy', played by the fantastic Hattie McDaniel, seems to singlehandedly be holding the entire household together.
According to a comment on this clip, McDaniels and Clark Gable were friends in real life, and during the notorious incident where Blacks were banned from attending the premiere in Atlanta (seriously, wtf?), Gable boycotted it until she persuaded him to go.
A strange embarrassing history we have here in the States.
3. Rest in Peace Cormac McCarthy
Rob Doyle's obituary piece on Cormac McCarthy. Rest in Peace.
At the time of his passing, he was the best America had.
There is no heir.
Thanks to friend and patron G J for sending this article to me.
4. Chuck Palahniuk Interview on Impact Theory
Always nice to listen to Chuck.
"This ancient species predates most dinosaurs"
Some things leave one saying “woah...”
