Greetings and felicitations friends, hope you had a nice Holiday.

I took a break from Better Than Friday last week to visit family.

Got some good stuff coming this month, including, closer to the new year, the Best Books of 2023.

Thank you so much for your continued support.

1. An author I should've read by now - Sigmund Freud (paid link)

The Uncanny seems like a good place to start but I'm all ears if anyone has a suggestion.

2. Harry Crews on Flannery O'Connor

What a voice. I'm finishing up Childhood by Crews. It may be one of the greatest things I've read.

3. Houllebecq's Annihilation acquired by Picador - To be released Sep. 2024

Looking forward to it immensely. Thanks to friend and fan Devon for the heads up.

4. "Nah it was dumber than that."

A genius line delivery from Brad Pitt in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His character Cliff Booth, after smoking a cigarette dipped in acid, suddenly finds himself confronted by members of the Manson family.

5. BBC Late Night Horror intro

Incredible! So disturbing, even today…

Freud: The Future of an Illusion.

Rebecca Hamilton

So, thought: before you plunge into Freud, you might want to read “Freud: Biologist of the Mind” by Fran Sullivan. (I may not have the details exactly right but that will get you to the right end point.) It is critical assessment of Freud’s career - “Teutonic crackpottery and all - seen through the prism of early 20th Century scientific thought. It brings home how, simultaneously, Freud was a complete lunatic and possible charlatan AND a genius at the same time and, further, that it would be difficult if not impossible to tease out the difference between the genius and the lunacy. As it often is.
