Ryry

mythical refresh pull thanks boyz

Paul Fuller

Worth the wait for a 2 hour nightz

Michael

They do ask a lot of odd questions when you donate blood. I always answer no. But there are a few questions I wish I could answer yes to -_-

Nayelia

Things I learned so far: Afroman did that one song that reminds me of that Redman/Method Man movie. My state is racist against Chinese people. Everyone does Shakespeare. We did Romeo and Juliet and watched both the original and Leo Dicaprio version. Now to continue with the rest of the episode!

Twinkletoes

I had my wisdom teeth out while the tv played a cooking show deboning a chicken 😭

Andre S

1:05:45 "mixing up British and American spellings" Based solely on this, I think they're actually Canadian

JMVR

As someone born in said Pekin, uhhhhh im scared now lmao

JMVR

Yes, it's the Pekin (Chinese slur), and the *majority white* students loved the name. We believed we're opposite of Beijing (Peking), and lots still do. My history teacher at the same high school was a white supremacist. Also we have nothing here. There are next to no local businesses, and the only grocery stores are Kroger and Walmart.

JMVR

Also the ice rink was called the (Chinese slur) Rink

yjw

almost 4 hours of main and patreon combined is crazyyyyyyy i love it

Owen Pascal

I had to pick between 1984 and Brave New World. Barely read BNW but wish I picked 1984 but I was scared off by all the people who didn't get what the book was actually about bringing it up all the time

Owen Pascal

Growing up with jrpgs like ff are def a big reason for my politics, and I don't get how so many other weebs never got it

Elizabeth Darling

Central Illinois here. Getting too close to home...

JMVR

My grandma was on the side of the Chinese rights groups and protested for the school to change the name

Ray

I really loved my high school… I hate that i wasn’t able to keep even one single piece of “school spirit” merch because the team name was a slur 😭

lxvedeterrence

i wonder how much of that cultural resonance happening in Japan bw FF7 & Eva that Jordan wonders abt comes down to the impact of Aum Shinrikyo? idk

Vickie

The slight delay was oh so worth it. TWO HOURS? We've been blessed.

AbeilleAbbie

i had to read Ender’s Game in high school! i loved it so much and was crushed when i learned that Orson Scott Card is a bad person lol

yjw

me listening to anastasia calling her 200k town „small“ as someone from a 3k town 😭

yjw

jarvis holding back his medical experience because it might scare people reminds me of getting an awake gastroscopy iykyk

TrueLily

I feel you, city folks don't get it

rwnv

THE JARVIAC KILLER

TrueLily

This article is so weird, like, why does this journalist care if this guy is Satoshi

TrueLily

For reference, Atlantic City, New Jersey has a population just under 40k. Now, nobody would call AC a big city, but it's not a small town lol. City is about more than just having a million people

yjw

this was soooo fun and interesting :)

mango :3

jarvis saying “to wrap up nights” less than halfway through the episode 😭😭😭

phogul

The Jarviak Killer is insane LMAO

Marty F

The metro area is ~300k, if Wikipedia can be believed

tori

Silver

Resident evil 9/ff7 spoilers stop round 45:00 in. No idea exactly where they start, but it’s somewhere in the 30s

Chloe💋

I’m a 16 year old who half pays attention in AP comp sci and even I know public key is like the whole internet

Claire

honestly would love more "book report" episodes where someone just talks for an hour about something they're super knowledgeable in

possum planner

12:51 clearly someone didnt have to watch the HBO special Blood Brothers about a kid who got hiv via blood transfusion, gets singled out at school because he can't mix his blood with other boys at the school, but then they realize they can just pour drops of their blood on the ground and mix blood that way to become blood brothers. The late 80s was a time.

Heather

Jarvis, this episode was amazing and lots of fun. I have only dipped my toes into the tech world but find these things very interesting, and I would genuinely love to hear you explain things like this in the future.

scarflett

if youre under 18 you cant join the discord that imght be it

indiana

hmm.. i’m 20. i’ll try from the linktree and see if it translates

dee

I feel so seen with Anastasia’s dentist story. It takes an unbelievable amount to get me numb and anytime I go to a new dentist they just don’t believe me

Tinna Gigja

VH1 over here would play music from the 1950s-1990s, leaning more into dad rock. 'VH1 Rocks' (iirtnc) would play Iron Maiden or Metallica rather than Korn. Maybe the US version was different. Did you have Kerrang? That's where I'd have looked for Korn rather than on VH1.

Amalie Lind Ravn

Ollie is just so calm and chill and cute this episode. Great vibes! My friend and I used to have VH1 on all the time as of the 3 music tv stations it was the only one that actually played music most of the time.

Ethan Provençal

Anastasia love u lots but if it's in the 100k+ range it's definitely not a small town 😭

Keo

I had to read Ender's game in elementary school. I re-read it last year and I still like it but it's so Mormon coded. We also had to read Harrison Burgeron and I hated it so much dude, it's just "I hate disabled ppl and communism". But maybe I don't have good reading comp 🤷

Alex Arbogast

I live near pekin (like 20 minutes-ish) and must add, they are still incredibly racist. I think they either are still or until recently (like late 2010’s) were a sundown town. The people are getting better as a lot of the older generation leave or die, but everyone in the surrounding area avoids the town like the plague.

Calea

Dude the Pekin stuff reminds me of how the Lawrence Sullivan "Sully" Ross statue situation at Texas A&M was handled. Ross was a confederate but he contributed to the school, so they made a statue of him. Students protested to take down the monument, and if I’m not mistaken it came down to a vote to take it down or leave it up. Of course, students voted to keep it up, regardless of how offensive it was. NGL it kind of feels like BS when schools put these kinds of things to a vote, especially when you know the differences in demographics of the people who are protesting against the racist thing and people who vote to keep it in place.

juicy j

i subscribed just so i could hear jarvis explain this satoshi article to me tbh you guys are now my extra news filter thank you so much

Inazo

It is pretty funny to be like "ye all these tech people I interviewed were very closed off and suspicious" and then you publish an article that confirms all of their suspicions about you approaching them

JMVR

Yeah you're not wrong. I don't know about the "sundown town" part since all the black people I know were only here recently (i.e. born here or moved here 2000 or later) and no one I know talks about the town's racist past, but yeah this town is racist to the bone. My mom saw a single black person in high school (around 2000) and she said she didn't expect it since literally everyone else was white. There are plenty of people around that "aren't racist", but that's true for any racist town. Just because they don't kill other races does that mean they don't hate them in private. I can't speak for what other people say in private. My mom's side of the family is not racist, but most either left Illinois entirely or they're staying here until they die (because they're old and poor). My dad's side is a whole other beast. They're not completely racist, but they have some racist tendencies. My dad isn't "racist" per se (as in he doesn't think all black people are inherently bad), but he does believe some of the racist things people say, like "60% of Black people (yadda yadda)" and whatnot. He sucks, so my mom and I got away from his as soon as we could. This town also has nothing, so eventually it'll either die off completely, or maybe enough non-racist people will be here for the town to finally revitalize into something non-racist itself.

So Yesterday I had a panic attack while being high and alone and listening to the pod got me trough it. Thanks bros

Michelle :3

frrrrr. like my hometown was less than 25k lmao

EmElla

1:21:30 thank you Jarvis!!!! I have little intelligence or knowledge when it comes to these things, but I can picture and conceptualize that.

Quinn M

never thought i'd hear a pekin, il reference as someone who lives near there lol. i had no idea about that mascot or the name origin, wow
