I played volleyball in high school and we had “big sisters” (varsity players that paired up with JV players to show them the ropes). My big sister left the school a month before her graduation because the church of Scientology offered her a job(?) but she had to start immediately and she had to move in to their housing(??) in Clearwater, FL. Her parents were part of the church but lived in a normal neighborhood and had normal jobs so I didn’t have any idea that it was basically a cult. She gave away a bunch of her clothes and other belongings to me and the team. Our coach was convinced that they didn’t want her to get her high school diploma because it would make it easier for her to leave an get another job if she decided she didn’t want to be there anymore. Years later she invited some of her high school friends to her wedding, her fiancé also lived/worked there. Out of those of us invited we realized that it was the friends she was kinda close with but that none of the best friends got invites. I really think they wouldn’t let her invite them or that maybe she went through some indoctrination that made her not want to associate with them anymore. I think it’s really weird and that she was manipulated at a young age, but I hope she’s still happy there.

Re: The Drama- The white characters (Charlie and Rachel) are held to much different standards than the Black characters (Emma and Mike). Rachel plays up Mike's transgression by saying he used his ex as a human shield and says he's making excuses when he tries to explain that the ex *kicked* the dog that was biting her. Then Rachel minimizes her own transgression of leaving a mentally disabled child for dead locked in a trailer in the woods and refusing to admit to knowing where he was because she was scared/she panicked/etc. As if Mike wasn't panicking when being attacked by a dog. Rachel also handwaves Charlie's cyberbullying. But when she hears Emma's confession, Rachel takes the position of victimhood by association, utilizing her cousin's experiences to demonize Emma. Meanwhile, Emma makes very few excuses for herself, despite us seeing flashbacks of how unsupervised (she's literally carrying a rifle around her empty house) and clearly alone she was during that time of her life, and she takes Charlie and Rachel's judgement on the chin. And she's done work since then to make amends for the harm she planned but never carried out. What amends have Rachel or Charlie made? No one interrogates them on that. Emma and Mike aren't allowed to have made mistakes without being labeled bad people despite any mitigating circumstances or amends, and I think it's kind of apparent why. Anyway, fuck Rachel, all my friends hate Rachel.

Sorry, but is Anastasia a producer or a participant on the podcast? I feel her yelling her own opinion over the podcasters despite not being on screen unprofessional for a producer role This is simply my opinion as a consumer of this product

Moss

How long have you been listening to the pod? I’m asking because this is the normal way the podcast goes. Anastasia, peeps and Jacob are not seen but heard. it’s a part of the pod that I love. She’s basically both those things

User18739

Well noted, appreciate the answer👍 I used to listen a long long time ago, when it was just hosted by Jarvis and Jordan

knowing the context, i think it is pretty hard not to see the drama as the machinations of a man who believes 16 year olds are, for all intents and purposes (and i do mean *all*), full-fledged adults. i think the movie's refusal to contend with the reality that vulnerable teenagers are very easily radicalized is the main reason why its thesis rings so hollow. yes, we all have skeletons in our closets, so it's good to empathize with people when they mess up, to confront their mistakes with compassion instead of indignation, but that's not enough; we also need to recognize that we cannot hold children to the same account as we can adults. the movie never shows us that, though; instead, charlie can only truly accept what emma did after he himself has a breakdown and nearly makes a horrible mistake in a desperate moment. we're clearly expected to compare his nearly cheating on emma with emma's nearly shooting up her school, but it doesn't address the obvious fact that emma was 16 for the latter while charlie was 30 for the former. he has all of the life experience and social support structures which the lackthereof he superficially tries to convince himself precipitated teenage emma's violent impulses, yet he still couldn't reckon with his conflicted feelings in a productive way. but the movie doesn't hold him to account for that; it just agrees with him that his conception of the circumstances that created teenage emma's impulses was wrong, even having adult emma feel insulted that he would conceive of such a thing at all. but he wasn't wrong. children do lack important life experiences, and can easily be led astray without strong social support structures. borgli just wants him to be wrong because if 16 year olds are adults then he can date them

Re: the drama - the most upsetting part would be that my partner didn’t feel comfortable enough to tell me this - DAYS BEFORE OUR WEDDING.
