You can be a Christian, and also not want to go on a violent crusade. 🤷

Tinna Gigja

Pro-war AI songs can never beat this: "Now this nation that I love has fallen under attack A mighty sucker punch came flyin' in from somewhere in the back Soon as we could see clearly Through our big black eye Man, we lit up your world Like the fourth of July Hey Uncle Sam, put your name at the top of his list And the Statue of Liberty started shakin' her fist And the eagle will fly man, it's gonna be hell When you hear mother freedom start ringin' her bell And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you Oh, brought to you courtesy of the red white and blue Oh, and justice will be served and the battle will rage This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage And you'll be sorry that you messed with The U.S. of A. 'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass It's the American way"

The title of today's night's lured me in to be a perverse night's first viewer

The way you know internet culture is american is that my country has had younger groups protesting to make things legal that ARE already legal in my country, because it was very talked about in america has a big issue. Like a big group was protesting to make abortion legal here, and it already was.

if anyone wants to dig more into the extremely weird and complicated Boy George situation, A Bit Fruity just did an episode on it and it’s great.

I have an anti-Sheeran bias that I fully acknowledge is not rooted in who he is as a person and performer because he’s definitely talented and I have no reason to believe he’s not a lovely person. In 2018 Shape of You by Sheeran won the Grammy for best solo pop performance beating out, among others, Praying by Kesha. For a song that’s all about a woman’s body being for a man’s enjoyment to win out over a song that is about a woman in the aftermath sexual abuse really stung. I don’t deny that regardless of the lyrical content, Shape of You is catchy and musically very fun but whenever I listen to it I get a sour feeling. That feeling, as unfair as I know it is, just sort of transfers over to Sheeran in general.

Order of auction items (most–least expensive) is jersey, lion costume, drums, ET, MJ jacket, then "door" for audio-only folks :)

not trying to defend these guys, but when i heard familiar faces my brain jumped to mad world’s “all around me are familiar faces”. it’s entirely possible they are a little goofy and didn’t see the political connections when they wrote it (just trying to see the best in ppl ykno)

Sne

Everyone here should def watch abitfruity’s episode on boy george, it was so insightful

Sne

I also am finding it hard to believe that familiar faces is not an intentional dog whistle… i don’t really buy the dumb/naive attitude they’re playing. But maybe I’m being pessimistic 😔

charlie

was trying SO HARD to figure out where i knew the names boy george and culture club from before anastasia mentioned karma chameleon,, im so ready for everything to make sense

charlie

ok. i’m literally 6:34 in and i’m already too mad to be commenting in a public space without a cooldown to figure out what i wanna say, so. instead, can we talk about how brian molko brought the boy george-esque queer pop icon look into. perhaps not quite modern-day anymore, but MY modern day? and lowkey i’d argue he did it better (esp compared to pete wentz, who i have personal beef with)

charlie

i do have to Vehemently disagree with the concept of a usamerican-heavy (online) monoculture making us (my fellow genz in particular) inherently usamerican, and tbh it feels kinda colonian propaganda mindset to me. im (aboriginal) australian, and i cant deny that our government and pop-culture is leaning heavily towards us-centricism. but countless cultures around the world have survived heavier colonisation than i’ve every experienced, and worse than anything the online world perpetuates, and our cultures, heritage, and history continue to survive. acknowledging the aggressively heavy influence and chokehold usamerica has on the world is an important conversation that is very much worth having, but the language used here to describe it feels kinda insensitive, to me at the very least.

charlie

^ i wanna make it really clear that any criticism i have isn’t to try and take anything in bad faith, but more to open a conversation around it. i completely understand where jordan in particular is coming from, esp given how influenced by usamerica the uk has gotten in recent years. i really appreciate the way that the boys and everyone involved in the podcast talk about things, and i cant imagine how hard publishing the first couple of drafts on thoughts must be (god knows i’ve said things that i only reflect on when someone pushes back against the way i’ve phrased things). i also really wanna give them props for not being scared to call the palestinian genocide a genocide, and the emphasis they put on seperating being jewish and being a zionist (i’m not jewish myself, but i can’t imagine how much it must suck to have your identity stolen so that a genocidal government can continue to play the victim (even without the context of israel being so fucking antisemetic)). i have so much love in my heart for everyone involved in this podcast, and i never mean any ill will. i do, however, think it’s important to raise issues in good faith whenever they may arrive. much love to everyone<3

charlie

AND also ok, i Heavy agree with anastasia about musicians who were even somewhat political/counterculture in their youth refusing to acknowledge that they might be on the wrong side of things, even if their audience is just trying to educate them on a misunderstanding. i’ve been into mychem for almost a decade now, and frank iero has made some of my alltime favourite music. but he’s so desperate to still be a progressive punk from nj that he genuinely lost his shit on twitter(iirc) when people informed him that “lizard people” is a dogwhistle—and truly dont get me started on how he and several of his bandmates reacted when ls dunes Actually Paid Real Money to an ai artist and expected everyone to clap for these big industry titans commissioning a pseudo-thief. i think too many artists, and too many people full stop, are so used to arguing for what they believe in that they dont realise how times have changed. you’re on a fasttrack to being “old and set in your ways” if you arent willing to listen

Carla Nicolini

jordan confused boy george with pete burns a few times lol (spin me round and celeb big brother)... rest in peace pete burns!

Jess Smith
