The characters shorts of the Volumes are kind of "trailers" for the Volume. So is safe to watch the Ruby Character Short before Volume 4 ^^

Believe it or not, but the shape of the continents was primarily chosen because of one dinner at a restaurant in Texas. Monty Oum ate his dinner and the shape of the stains on the napkin became the world of remnant. You can even google Monty Oum's napkin map and see it (I saw it on reddit).

FYI, there are character shorts before volumes 4, 5 and 6. All of them are really good and set the stage for that volume.

Prequel stories were something that Rooster Teeth (the RWBY IP's first owner) always wanted to do to expand the universe (like a Team STRQ prequel) but they were always on some kind of shoestring budget in the beginning and even when "RWBY proper" would be able to increase their funds they'd be hit with budget cuts. In one particular volume (and when you get there, you might notice), funds were channeled from RWBY to another show which lead to the RT Animation studio director stepping down from his position to just consultant and eventually altogether just leaving Rooster Teeth. Then the closing of Rooster Teeth happened in 2024 only to be aqcuired by Viz Media a few months later. Right now RWBY proper is in preproduction for Volume 10 so it's been guestimated that we might get it sometime in 2027. Though Viz Media has been recently ramping up their RWBY promotional material (releasing the Volume 1-9 BluRays, more merchandise from the Online RWBY store, collaborations with other companies. etc), and the main voice actors for Team RWBY plus showrunner Kerry Shawcross recently filmed some promotionals so we may here some kind of news soon whether it's a RWBY product or the main show itself.

About Menagerie, the name refers to "A curated collection of wild or exotic animals kept in cages or enclosures for exhibition, study, or private viewing." So yeah it was an intentional name to really drive the point of humanity still be discriminatory and seeing the Faunus as third class citizens. And the Hawaiian name Kuo Kuana, the settlement that the Faunus on Menagerie reside, means either two things depending on context, "Rejected" or "Welcome."

Also, if you make some historical/geographical reference from IRL. Menagerie is kind of the "Australia" of Remnant geographically and Australia's origins are basically that of a "prison colony" where england basically shipped off the people they didnt want to live somewhere else instead of helping them. Sounds awfully similar...
