Noah and I discuss his creative and personal crossroads, phone bad, Twitter brain, struggling to change our YouTube voices, and whether drama videos are good for society (they're not).

Towards the end we touch on masculinity, casual sex, accountability culture and leftist pathologies, and several times throughout this episode we touch hands.

Lovely chat with an interesting person. He likes to ask questions and listen so I talked a lot in the first half. This was our first real sit down one on one we had ever done so you're witnessing the learning each other and bonding for the first time.

Great conversation about social media. I remove myself then find myself having to dip my toes back in constantly to keep up with the world around me. I am always reminding myself the world that exists online will reach me if it is truly important. I do not text unless necessary, my family has a group chat that I feel forced to, at the very least, read because otherwise I am being rude, but am I really being rude simply not engaging in small talk? Why do these conversations HAVE to be had digitally right this second? Why can we not have them when we see each other next? It is exhausting. We are perpetuating this issue, we all choose to participate, which is the most frustrating aspect of it all. If we all hate it then why do we continue? We feel like we're missing out on the fun if we aren't participating but if no one participates then there is nothing to miss out on. Companies integrate their function under the guise of convenience which forces us to participate as well. It is hard to truly be offline while participating in a technology and social media obsessed society

I'm about 50 minutes in but I wanted to speak on the idea of fucking the internet. So, I'm not hearing it brought up in the conversation at all but people like me that don't have anybody at all around in real life, we're not just going to fuck off our phones. Like, it's our only lifeline to socializing. I think it would be really helpful and useful and fucking awesome if some of you guys maybe got together and decided to do a workshop or something, some kind of brainstorming of ideas so that those of us that definitely want to go ahead with fucking the internet, can actually build a community before we fuck that internet off. Do you know what I mean? The internet is an incredible tool that we could use to find communities or make communities around us, and we definitely need community before we just cut off our only tether. I mean how else would you guys have been able to find each other if not for the internet? You have a community going on right now and you're using the internet to spread words about fucking the internet. But there are many of us, fucking most of us probably, that don't have a community. Anyway I know you see what I'm saying because I am repeating myself. Great video so far. It's really cool watching all of these people I found independently wind up knowing each other. It's like some way real life version of marvel but infinitely more relevant with art and philosophy and stuff.

I loves me some Noah. (Not the one that built the ark. That guy was lowkey a dick)

CJ, I challenge you to not make a blurb or description of something, and just post it on Patreon saying “I did a thing, watch it.” We’ll figure it out

So I started working out at like 27 as part of a general push to get my life together, I was skinny my whole life and at this age I started to not be. It's probably unhealthy but I had a beach photo from this age that was my motivation. Also as someone with Bipolar 2 going to the gym is therapeutic and provides a third space, if you haven't heard of the term it's a place to go on a regular basis that's not work or home and they're disappearing in modern life. This has become incredibly centering for me and I kept doing it even when I was working burnout-inducing 12 hour days, and the loss of this was the hardest thing about the pandemic.

This is a cool discussion, it motivates me to find some kind of AA group, but for phones/social media in my region. Or even organize one if none exist yet.

please if you think that meditation is really difficult it's so worth it to consider looking into actual genuine buddhist meditation techniques and philosophy. the stuff you get through the apps and the popular idea of what meditation is in the us is really narrow and going directly to the source was what really cracked it open for me. there are actual buddhist monks all over youtube talking about meditation (like Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche), there are channels like doug's dharma (he's a secular buddhist) who do some pretty good run downs, and i'll never stop recommending the book The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh. it really turned me around to see completely different methods and how many methods there are.

I would 100% watch a CJ the X video on anything the moment I know it's out, but also, I'd be interested in an academic video on why journaling is good or whatever.

okay 2 parts of this almost made me cry. the first part was the lack of artifacts for family and friends and kids. i feel this deep sadness that people won’t have anything to remember me with and so i’m going to invest in journaling more and creating more physical things. the second part was the random line where cj said like “when computer time was the thing that interrupted our experience not when real life experience interrupted our computer time” AHHH FUCK. that scares the shit out of me. i want to live and experience the world and yet i just look at content and screens all day. i’m not even really addicted to social media, i just use screens to work and entertain myself and to interact with long distance friends, but i wish i felt more like screens and the internet were this separate space. i remember bo talking about this in one of the interviews he did, but i guess i never really got it until now. anyways this was one of my favorite conversations on this patreon and i don’t even really know noah so that’s saying something

I love this dynamic! I really relate to the pattern of Noah's self criticism. This particular dynamic where CJ recognized this about Noah and brought it to light in a curious, empathetic way helped me further recognize this thought pattern as not something uniquely specific to me only, but present widely, including in Noah. The intimacy of Noah Time and seeing similar traits reflected in him while also watching him constructively coexist and live with these traits also helped me arrive at this realization. What a wonderful and healing thing to know how connected the human experience is lol. If anyone relates, particularly if you have/suspect ADHD, you should read Gabor Mate's Scattered Minds. It tells how such self esteem issues are not simply just a product of having lived with the failures and ego blows of ADHD, but how fundamentally, self esteem issues are a core aspect of how ADHD actually DEVELOPS, and thus is common to everyone living with it regardless of how successful/unsuccessful your life experience is. I'm so passionate on this topic and really felt this urge to share if anyone is interested :P

It's very funny to watch this as a person who does not want kids and think about legacy through that lens. Also really loved hearing y'all talk about dating/masculinity/apps. I feel like men's issues are often discounted because they have privileges, and areas where they're the unprivileged are taboo to recognize. I've met so many cool people that have been in my life for years through dating apps and I've watched friends/family/former partners who are men become so disheartened by them.

Could be cool if you would have a conversation with Patricia taxxon , I know you collaborated with her on some of her songs and she also heavily referenced you in her last essay , anyway seems like you would have lots to talk about music-wise and content creator-wise and philosophy-wise …🦐

Patrick James

So, I'm 40. I have kids heading into teen years. The phone use doesn't stress me at all, but in part that's because we're all in it together, but in other part because I think I understand a solution and I'm trying to connect to people to see happen. It's basically the equivalent of the BBC or CBC or NPR, but it's a free Internet/android kernal for under 18s (and anyone else) that is publicly funded, and not an ad or a single one of the companies of silicon valley is invited. Because I'm mean and don't like how silicon valley unicorns usurped the montreal band, I used to think of it as "the genocide of the unicorns" But genocide is a horrible word so now I say "Gen On Side..." It's also feasible as a nongovernmental cooperative like mondragon. Basically instead of regulating the existing ecosystem replace the lot. I write comic books and fantasise about things. But sooner or later I'll make the connections and having a possible fantasy that I aim for removes any guilt accepting the current situation, because I don't, it just seems easier now to wipe out all of silicon valley than to manage the device usage. Shrug emoji...

This conversation did inspire me to finally go out and buy a gratitude journal

Kurt Brown

this made me delete ig off my phone and I thank you for that

Gen_Li77

I used to journal and I stopped, I feel sad about that because I always love rereading through my own past journals and seeing how I’ve changed over time. Might take it up again, thank you for reminding me of how helpful journaling is and how important engaging with tangible things is

Ruth

screen zen is a free really good option for limiting your screen time!

Ruth

I’ve been using it for the past week and for the first time in a while I felt my feelings and it was a lot. I felt like an iPad adult who had their tablet taken away and I was.

Juan De La Torre

I can’t wait for the accountability video. I think you’re the right person to do this CJ. Noah could add some input in general and about the way he talks about shame.🫂
