I'm 25 minutes in and realized I wasn't supporting you on patreon despite having thoroughly enjoyed your previous essays so I quickly fixed that. Super stoked for the next 2 hours of delicious #content.

I was a tumblr kid and a part of the bo burnham fandom. had no irl friends and only online friends. we would watch his specials on repeat over tiny chat and knew a lot about each other's personal lives. We absolutely knew Bo as "patient zero" and connected deeply with his expression of pain/angst/apathy with the rub of the digital world. i was emotionally abused by someone in the fandom who was 23 when i was 14, all online. no one in my family knew a thing about my online life. when i went to college i deleted tumblr and tried to live in the "real" world more often. and things got better for me. i took a social media class in my media studies undergrad. The text book, Social Media: Enduring Principles, wasn't dry or boring like I expected it to be. It was engaging, and enlightening. The dramaturgical theory of self? The way in which technological affordances simultaneously enable and constrain communication?? I finally had words to describe what happened to me and a source that proclaimed explicitly that it was happening on a broad scale to millions of people. I had information to show what I went through wasn't about me, but what about digital infrastructure. Big recommend that book for anyone even slightly interested in a basic understanding of social media from a media theorist's perspective. It gave me that feeling you mention of "thank fuck someone is saying it". Thank fuck someone is putting words to these emotionally bankrupting experiences so that I can talk to other people that have been through it and we can talk about it and relate to each other without the nitty gritty, gushy, personal stuff that would take a whole netflix special or 2.5 hour video essay to explore. I also recently read Conflict is Not Abuse which (i hated 50% of but) I fully recommend if you're interested in exploring more of the conversation of "cancel culture" or how sometimes oppressed or traumatized people/communities act in ways the mirror punitive power of supremacy culture. i ended up unable watch bo's work at all for a long time despite really enjoying it and connecting with it in my youth. I didn't even see eight grade (but will probably watch it after seeing your video). i watched his new special a week ago with the only person im still in contact with from the fandom. im sending them this video and am excited to hear their thoughts on it. Will also be reading Kill All Normies with a friend soon. Thanks for making this. I didn't know anyone felt the similar begrudging love/hate relationship I've had with Bo's work for most of my life other than the other people in his shitty 2014 tumblr fandom. Excited to share this with other people and for the slow, long, nuanced, and un-memeable conversations that will follow

Thanks for sharing, I been thinking bout this since I read it. It's a unique experience to have an entire dimension of social and emotional experience literally impossible for our parents to understand. It all happened while you were alone with your laptop in your home, but it's in your head so it's real. I think Burnham's work asks to be understood with a kind of meta annoyance and depth. Interesting how complex your relationship with his art is and how tangled in the internet it is. I'll be reading Conflict Is Not Abuse bc it seems really relevant to my politics and philosophy of action I'm trying to spread n this my job now. Eighth Grade slaps I promise. No Bo-isms. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

This video absolutely blew my mind - this is how I've been feeling for the majority of my late teens and early adulthood, and you've managed to put it all into words. I'm about to watch this for a second time (so I can make a TL;DR list for all my friends who say it's too long to watch), and I just wanted to genuinely thank you for making this. You're an incredible artist :)

I remember I tried explaining the depth of fear and hopelessness the internet exposed me to as a middle schooler to a high school teacher once. The magnitude of the world, it's bad parts, the parts that could be fixed and those that seemed impossible to change simultaneously lived in me as I went to algebra. They couldnt understand how that felt bc they weren't formed by the internet like I had been. It was comforting, heart wrenching, and with hopeful calm listening to this. Thank you for this

this video came to me randomly through a tumblr mutual i had never spoken to - so the "algorithm" brought me here, kind of? who knows. regardless, this essay resonated with me deeply as someone who is balancing an online life that i didn't want to connect with my personal life and helped me work through questions of identity and why i felt both catharsis and stress when it came to creating and the process of making art for art, or art for profit. regardless, i'm retiring the word "content" from my vocabulary, and thank you so much for making this video to not only put tough concepts into words, but going beyond by providing the background and context to show us how we should be rethinking and understanding them. wishing you the best!

I feel this video was a slap in the face turning point for me, the type of moment that happens once a year or less and makes me realize how deeply rooted I am in habits that harm myself. The moment prior was reading the velvet rage last year, a book about why gay men are so terrible to themselves and others. Thank you.

Was pointed at this video from Fiq the Signifier. Watched it. Required three sittings. Take my money.

finally got around to watching this and it was more than i could have possibly asked for. ive been emailing a pen pal lately about transhumanist adjacent topics and cultural issues and ill be recommending this to them, on the off chance they have 3 hours to spare. your conversation with Dave was especially inspiring. thanks again for your work CJ <3
