Watching someone steadily approach me, getting closer to all of my most unremarkable traits, the proximity activating defence mechanisms like I’m a high security government research bunker protecting state secrets.

The problem is very simple, I realized in my adolescence we treat the people we know best worse than we treat acquaintances. We reward those who painstakingly peel back the layers of our selves and accept our grimy boring imperfect details with our worst moments, while putting on our mask of charisma and understanding for those at arms length.

I mean cosmic arms length, not literal arms length. Actual arms length is extremely close and intimate, the symbolic interpersonal version involves weeks of not speaking.

To have someone care enough about you to share their convictions with you honestly risks their convictions conflicting with your identity. Your love comes in a capsule marked Honesty but it’s telling me that part of me shouldn’t exist.

I spend about 50% of my day building infrastructure around my anxiety and anger and dissatisfaction to transform energy from a negative core into a positive output as a service to those around me, what did you think would happen if you got closer towards the core? You’re inadvertently being targeted by my high security government research bunker, which normally only fires on itself.

I never feel more guilt than when I’m in a relationship. I watch the meanest and most selfish parts of me unleash themselves on the kindest person in my vicinity. Not unleashed, it’s just the leash normally keeps it’s firing range in a tight circumference and I’ve invited someone into the splash zone. So the meanest most selfish parts of me are extremely leashed but they’ve been writhing in there for so long unnoticed, I’m revolted when the least deserving person who has devoted themselves to the glorious me the most is now sat in a cage with an abusive dog. Here’s your payment for being my favourite person in the world. Everyone else gets me on stage, performing for the back row with impeccable passion, and you get me wondering if I should even love you. Thank you for your service sweetheart.

You probably shouldn’t date if you’re doubtful of your capacity for sincere love. I’m capable for moments, anyone can find themselves caught up in the vicissitudes of biological bliss. But the moment it feels tiresome, I’m tossed back into the waves of my own ineptitude. Why embark upon such a case study of my lowest points? Why, when alternatively I can provide a nicely packaged sack of no promises with lots of favours.

I can be eloquent about it but the truth is I’m just embarrassed. My apartment looks really gorgeous because I love the relief and excitement on the face of those entering as a result of the gorgeousness. That’s really important to me. Giving people the best of me means a lot to me. I hate myself and I love other people. Why the fuck you entering my orbital center???!

So this is a long way to say I don’t love you. I don’t inherently love, in a passionate and unabashed sense. Instead I choose to love. I perform the act of loving. It’s a lot more complicated, and yet maybe I have a mental illness that brands my emotions extreme and unreliable, but you know what maybe in the cosmic sense holding someone close instead of holding them at arms length looks a lot more like decisions than feelings. And maybe I choose to love instead of feel love, which is a fleeting fucking immature resource that lands me in a pit of indulgence and hurting people’s feelings, maybe I love you because I love you like I fuck you like I listen to you like I think about you maybe I love you like one of the many things I do and I’m sorry you get the worst of me but also you’re welcome for the most boring piece of me I don’t show anyone else.

The cowardly thing to do would be to show no one the very unremarkable truth. The courageous thing to do would be actually tell the high security government research facility to maybe stop shooting itself? Stop shooting anything? Maybe shoot only dangerous things. Hard to conceive of after a lifetime of anti-everything-including-itself programming but are we adults or are we pessimistic little bitches?

What would financial success allow me? More capability in taking care of the people I truly care about? Would be a shame if I gained in my career without being able to spoil anyone I love with my spoils. I find passion in giving the best of me. Disgust in giving the worst. I feel like I give the far away people the best and the close people the worst. I need to give the far away people the best so I can make money to give to the closest people. I say I’m giving my worst while my loved ones say “This is the best no one sees.”

I’m considering cutting everyone off and focusing entirely on my personal financial success. I decide once again no, despite everything I think and feel I’m fully confidently sure I’m wrong, and my fear of God is not more powerful than God, so if I accept I am not God and submit myself to humility yet again, the love I have to offer is so valuable it would be cruel of me to withhold it just because I’m too scared to be flawed.

I’m flawed for you baby. I’m the worst of myself, just for you. I’m hurting myself less because you don’t deserve to be hurt, and you want to be inside of my maelstrom.

Thanks for loving me, I don’t deserve it, and I’m working on not believing that I don’t deserve it.

Bless you for sharing your journey. I hope it brings you comfort to know that in addition to sharing your best for others, sharing your worst holds up a mirror for other in the midst of their worst—lordy does it hurt good to be seen in such a way. Will be bringing your words into my own therapy session this evening: To have someone care enough about you to share their convictions with you honestly risks their convictions conflicting with your identity. Your love comes in a capsule marked Honesty but it’s telling me that part of me shouldn’t exist.

We could all do better at diversifying our sources of self-worth. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. We're adults and pessimistic little bitches, and oh how fun it is to be both!

Love may just be a feeling, but loving is a practice. Giving vs. receiving, from ourselves vs. from others, are all fundamentally different practices that won’t all be at the same capability at once, if ever. Each requires radically different skills and experiences. Loving requires practice. And it doesn’t get easier, we just get better at what we put into practice.

as a conceptually arms'-length stranger, receiving little parts of you like a meal delivery service is beautiful and scrumptious. but id rather know youre nourished body & soul than see another video. rather pay for that peace of mind than more art. i also let very few people in because inside is where the mess is... so for both (all) of us, g-d bless this mess

I find it disgusting how you reach into my head and steal these thoughts. Thank you for sharing, and best of luck.

I'm someone who always expects others to only see the worst parts of myself in any interaction. I have insane trust issues and do not ever believe people to hold sincere interest in my life or in anything I have to bring to theirs. I don't tend to seek out personal relationships because I have never seen myself as someone worth being sought out. I isolate myself on purpose because my anxiety is so severe that I cannot handle giving people any more emotional power over me. Because of this I tend to grab and hold on for dear life to any passing remark people have of me, positive or negative. I write plays and create art because it's what I'm told I am good at. I was an actor and singer growing up because I was told I was good at it, and I quit when I was told I wasn't. I'm sorry for going on about myself under this post but I want you to know that I appreciate and can relate to your vulnerability and honesty regarding your outlook on life and your complete awareness of what drives you to create, and how that drive is impacting your personal relationships. I've noticed these sentiments that you've shared here reflected in your music as well, and I resonate with the frustration of recognizing your behavior as toxic and harmful to yourself and others but feeling a complete lack of control over it. Our experiences of life are completely different but your expression of it in writing and music lends me insight and allows me to reflect upon it in a way that is helpful for me in understanding my own life. My goal as an artist is to inspire this kind of thought in others. I rambled here and I know that this post wasn't even meant for me but I am spectacular at making things about myself in an attempt to relate to other people.

don't apologise for talking about yourself. it's nice seeing other folk affected in the same way. your thoughts and experiences are every bit as valid as CJ's. thanks for sharing :)

im only commenting because im drunk and sad and on the brink of a break up with the kindest, most giving person i know. love takes so much fucking effort, i get tired. it's painful to have to choose love when it should be deserved, when it should be honored, when it's the only thing that makes sense but doesn't give. i get angry when love isn't enough to help us make it through and i get sad when i see her, the one person that matters, that chose to be mine say 'this isn't what i want'. and i say 'thank you for loving me more than i thought i deserved' and i let her go. and i love in quiet when i should be loving loud but maybe some other time. and though i hurt, i still think it is the only thing that really saves us - the kind of love that makes us question who we are, love that makes us want to be better. love that doesn't really give you any other option but to do better for you, because you give you to her in blind hopes that that will be enough - even when it’s not, but one day might be

Relationships of any kind are hard when you aren't reliably sane. I don't know you, only the image you choose to share but I do know me. I do not have a consistent coherent single sense of self. Which means saying "I love my boyfriend" is essentially nonsense. There isn't really and I so much as a "me" and the "we" opinion on most things is "conflicted, very strongly in all directions" Taking time to work on myself, and keep the scary away from others has been good. Practicing and learning how to be close to people has also been Good. Life is long and I've had time to do both. Solitude helps force to learn self love, and how to function independently. It helps fend off codependence. Time in relationships helps me work on tolerating other people's shit, and communication (which is extra complex when you feel things strongly but not reliably, and also not singular). Having absolute intellectually consistent axioms for running my life hasn't worked out well. One of the hard parts about being not singular is what works for me one minute can be unbearable in the next. Instead it's finding flow, and balance, and knowing that finding those things isn't an end goals, but a constant practice. It's feeling the Golden glow of connectedness with God (or whatever) and knowing that I'll never be good enough, and I'll never be safe, but I'll always be striving and that is the point.

I appreciate your prose. Thought provoking; everything is an act of love or a cry for it. Pushing people away because we may feel we’d hurt them with the way we hurt ourselves or in the same way that we hurt ourselves, we often do that because we love them. It’s hard, a vicious cycle, really. “I hate me, thus I don’t want you near me, but I love you and I want you near me.” Circles. And there’s also the fear. Believing in the innate worth of a human being and having experienced that worth be tossed aside by some ignorant cruelty time and time again or even just once creates a tremendous amount of fear, not only of the harm others are capable of inflicting, but also, the unintentional pain oneself may cause another. It’s terrifying. It’s good to care so much. It’s a journey to build the trust needed to feel like there’s no danger between two people. That’s the bliss and the agony of intimacy. Becoming an ant instead is not an option but a nice distraction. I’m working on replacing fearful solitude with awareness, responsibility, and communication (rather poorly) but hey, we’re human…? 🐜 i want a slushie
