"Fun to watch CJ squirm for once." - A friend's review of this episode.

Ellen's really incisive and they kind of freak me out. How can someone so gentle be so unnerving?

I think it's a specific synthesis between our personalities. They clearly care a lot about the things that I care about. They clearly respects my intelligence enough speak to me in depth about these things, but they're also so strong in their own intelligence that they're unabashedly beyond competent and perfectly happy to patiently push my points to their limits.

Not a lot of people get me nervous in what I kind of consider to be my area of expertise, but they made me feel like I was on the back foot somehow. Like I'm trying to fill a pit with pebbles.

The result are the hot sparks of blades crossing, in a good way.

58:27 donald glover just did this with his rerelease Atavista... and amid the many improvements ... i think there were mistakes made in the overtinkering he may have gotten into between his many other films and shows over the last four years... i have a lot of thoughts on that that i need to mull over (1:01:13 same!)

This was interesting to listen to! Its great to have insight at what you're thinking and working on. I connected to the last part of the conversation. I think that its important to manifest the feelings you have trough language and find ways to "solidfy" the thoughts in your mind. this is not always easy for me but im getting better at it and part of that is thanks to you CJ!

My favorite so far. Very engaging conversation.

I strongly agree with the Perfection point. I started defining perfection in art as "nothing takes away and everything contributes" which I think can be equated to your use of the word cohesion pretty directly. Same thoughts apply to making "correct" decisions during art making; if I need a drawing to have a sense of weight and mass in the background, using a darker color or palette is going to accomplish that goal, and a lighter one won't in most cases. It just won't, it would be incorrect. Another obvious example being if I'm writing a song and I want to build tension, there are proven right and wrong ways to do that with the medium of organized sound. I'm grateful to have discussions to listen to where people are taking art seriously and talking about the objectivity of subjectivity. Making art for the sake of making it is absolutely valid, but I don't want to take in the art of someone who's just DOIN shit the same way I fucking hate listening to someone talk who's just talking to make words out loud. I'm gonna die one day you nerd, if you're gonna use my time and attention please make it worth more than the genuine pleasure I get from stillness and silence

I'm really intrigued to see how this theory on perfection will take shape, because I find that I'm not sure how much of it I can agree or disagree with while not being able to see the full picture of it. I realize that's part of why you don't like to publicly reveal your thoughts like this before they're fully developed, or articulated: people could take them out of context, or disagree without understanding the full idea. That's why I appreciate the insight, though; there's a trust exhibited in the act of sharing the process that feels inherently vulnerable to me simply because of the risk of being misunderstood. The mortifying ordeal of being known but like, extra mortifying because you might be known in the wrong way. I suppose that makes being known in the way you want to be known even more rewarding... Anyway, all this to say I have many thoughts on the actual topic of this conversation, none of which I feel I can actually speak on yet, so instead I offer thoughts on the conversation itself and your choice to share it despite all it reveals. Or perhaps /because/ of what it reveals... maybe there's some secret plan behind all these patreon vids that I can't see yet lmao. Either way, good stuff. Also, I found out yesterday that a new friend of mine is a fan of yours despite not watching a lot of youtube! It's always pretty cool to find other CJ enjoyers out in the wild, so to speak.
